PB hotel design editorial

A short walk from the Trevi Fountain, on a narrow street where Rome's baroque grain asserts itself in every cornice and archway, Umilta 36 was carved from a historic palazzo and opened as a boutique hotel with a distinctly contemporary interior sensibility layered carefully over the building's classical bones. The arched entry door visible from the lobby — its proportions unmistakably Roman, iron-framed and generous — remains the clearest evidence of the structure's age, while everything behind it belongs to a different conversation entirely. That conversation is conducted in dark grasscloth-covered walls, brass-trimmed arch detailing, and a crimson hand-knotted rug that anchors the lobby lounge with enough warmth to counterbalance the otherwise deliberately shadowed palette. A bronze figurative wall sculpture emerges from one of the arched panels, giving the room a collected, cabinet-of-curiosities atmosphere without tipping into pastiche. Upholstered banquettes in cream textured fabric sit alongside velvet chairs in forest green and teal, the seating mix suggesting a knowing familiarity with mid-century Italian club interiors. The bar — its counter in polished black stone, back wall in warm oak with brass-edged shelving — anchors the ground floor with a quiet clubbiness. Guestrooms shift register: chevron oak parquet, walnut wall panelling, and grey upholstered headboards keep the mood calm and residential, with framed photography as the primary decorative gesture. The hotel's thirty-odd rooms across several floors achieve an intimacy that larger Roman properties rarely manage.

"Our stay at Umiltà 36 in Rome exceeded our expectations in every way. The location is simply unbeatable — literally just a one-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, yet somehow the hotel is incredibly quiet and peaceful. You are right in the heart of Rome, within walking distance of so many beautiful sights, restaurants and shops, but the moment you step inside the hotel, it feels like a calm and elegant escape from the city. The rooms are stylish, spacious, beautifully designed and full of character. Every detail feels sophisticated and luxurious while still being extremely comfortable. Service throughout our stay was excellent. The entire team was warm, professional, attentive and always ready to help, making us feel genuinely well looked after. Breakfast was another highlight — super fresh, delicious and beautifully presented, with excellent-quality ingredients. We also ordered room service and had the lasagne, which was absolutely delicious and one of those comforting meals you still remember after the trip! Umiltà 36 manages to combine location, design, comfort, excellent food and outstanding service perfectly. It truly feels like a hidden gem in the very heart of Rome. We would return without hesitation and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special and luxurious stay in Rome."

"This place was beautiful inside, the restaurant has two sides an italian and seafood side. You cannot have both, you must choose one or the other, although the restaurants seem to be in the same rooms. The staff in the restaurant were not pleasant to us and the alcoholic drinks were 25 euros each. Food was small portions and decent but expensive for the size and taste."

"My wife and I stayed at Umiltà 36 for our honeymoon trip to Rome, and I want to start by saying that the greeting staff were great. They were friendly, welcoming, and professional. Unfortunately, we had a very different experience with the bar manager Laura on our last night. I was present when my wife asked for a French 75 at the bar. The bartender was also professional and helpful, and we had no issue with him. The concern was specifically with the manager’s behavior. She appeared visibly irritated by the request and let out a loud, exaggerated sigh before walking into the back. I witnessed the interaction firsthand. We completely understand that she may have needed to check whether the necessary ingredients were available. That was never the issue. It was the manner in which the request was handled and the visible reaction in front of a guest that we found unprofessional. I was also disappointed by management’s response to my wife’s review on other platforms, which characterized the interaction as “non-verbal” and suggested that her negative experience was a matter of her “perception.” I was standing there and witnessed the same behavior myself. We cannot know what the manager intended, but we can describe what we both personally observed. I want to reiterate that the greeting staff and bartender were friendly and professional. Our concern is specifically about this interaction with the manager and the way the complaint was subsequently addressed. For a hotel of this caliber, I believe both the standard of professionalism in guest interactions and the way legitimate complaints are handled could be improved."

"I had a very disappointing interaction with a manager named Laura at Umiltà 36. I walked in and asked for a French 75, and she immediately seemed irritated that I had ordered a cocktail she apparently wasn’t familiar with. The bartender himself was perfectly fine and professional. My issue was entirely with Laura’s behavior. While my drink was being handled, she appeared to be complaining about my order in another language, and her irritation was obvious through her tone and body language. At one point, she let out an exaggerated, annoyed sigh before walking into the kitchen. As a guest, it was incredibly uncomfortable to be made to feel like an inconvenience simply for ordering a very standard cocktail. If you’re a manager in hospitality, guests should not be able to visibly see or hear your frustration over a drink order. Her behavior came across as dismissive, rude, and extremely unprofessional. The bartender did nothing wrong, but Laura’s attitude significantly affected my experience. Based on this interaction, I do not think she is well suited for a customer-facing management role."
