PB hotel design editorial

On the Janiculum slope above Trastevere, where the ancient gardens of Agrippina the Elder once extended toward the Tiber, a complex of ochre-tinted neoclassical buildings set within three hectares of landscaped grounds holds one of Rome's more quietly remarkable addresses. Villa Agrippina a Gran Meliá converted a former convent and papal estate into a 108-room hotel, preserving the terracotta-roofed pavilions and their relationship to the surrounding greenery — cypress, citrus, and clipped hedgerow — in a way that few Roman hotels of comparable scale have managed. The aerial view confirms what the property promises: a genuine garden hotel within the city walls, the lawn sweeping in broad curves between the main buildings while the dome of St. Peter's hovers at the skyline. The interiors work a considered tension between the building's ecclesiastical bones and a contemporary Roman sensuousness. Guestrooms are dressed in warm oak flooring and taupe silk drapery, with oversized photographic reproductions of Old Master paintings — Caravaggio and his Baroque circle — mounted as headboards, a device that grounds each room in Italian art history without reaching for the antiquarian. The circular bar, with its white marble counter, brass rail stools upholstered in peacock-blue velvet, and teal-painted arched recesses, delivers something closer to a Roman private club than a hotel lounge. The pool terrace, enclosed by tall hedges and dressed in white sun loungers beneath wire-frame parasol structures, completes a property that treats its extraordinary site as its primary material.

Villa Agrippina, a Gran Meliá Hotel Reviews

2,291 reviews

"Beautiful property. Spendy! Good service but for a few lazy reception workers. Not as close to main attractions as other reviews may lead you to believe, and few cabs. Even fewer Ubers. Clean, by Italy standards. Excellent breakfast buffet! One of the best I’ve experienced. Restaurant staff in Gala for dinner was lazy, too, except for Juan. Juan seemed, at times, to be one of few working. Friendly. The person who gave the tip about walking through the car park is a genius!"

"Our stay at Villa Agrippina Gran Meliá was absolutely exceptional. This is without question one of the best hotels in Rome if you want to combine luxury sightseeing with a real vacation atmosphere. The service was outstanding from start to finish — professional, attentive, and genuinely high-end. The location is perfect: walking distance to the Vatican and Rome’s historic center, yet the hotel feels peaceful and private. Before booking, I seriously considered other top luxury hotels in Rome, including Bvlgari Hotel Roma and several other famous five-star properties. However, what ultimately made Villa Agrippina stand out was something the others simply could not offer: incredible suites with truly spectacular terraces and views. What makes this hotel truly unique is the atmosphere. You can spend the day exploring Rome and then come back to relax by the amazing outdoor pool, almost like being at a luxury summer resort. Very few hotels in central Rome can offer this combination. In my opinion, it makes little sense to book other luxury hotels in Rome — even more expensive ones — if they don’t offer outdoor space or balconies. Here you can stay in spectacular suites with enormous 120m² terraces, large private jacuzzis, and breathtaking views over the Vatican, the old city, and the Tiber River. The terrace experience alone makes this hotel special and very difficult to match anywhere else in Rome. Another huge advantage: the jacuzzi water is very warm, so it’s perfectly usable even during colder months. After getting out, the terrace area still feels comfortable and cozy, which creates an amazing experience in the evening. One useful tip: it is worth calling the central reservation office of Meliá Hotels International directly before booking. In many cases you can negotiate a noticeably better rate than on Booking.com or other hotel platforms. This hotel offers something extremely rare in Rome: a true luxury resort feeling right in the middle of the city. Highly recommended."

"I have been a very regular guest at Gran Meliá hotels for many years, both for myself and my family. For this reason, I have been a Platinum member for years. I want to highlight how fantastic the hotel and the staff at ME Málaga, Meliá Colbert, Meliá Colón, and others are. This second visit since Christmas, with extended stays at the Villa Agrippina, was a great disappointment and a tremendous and serious frustration. My flight arrived two hours late in Rome last Thursday night, the 15th, at 10:30 PM, during a night of torrential rain and storms. I was attended to at reception by only one employee, to my surprise, an impertinent, haughty, and very unpleasant character. I believe his name was Federico or Frederick, something like that. He was the only one on duty. I arrived with a severe asthma attack due to my respiratory condition. Not only did they not upgrade me, which is standard practice if there's availability, but they also downgraded me to a basement cubicle under the reception area and even lower than the spa. This cubicle overlooked a tiny two-by-two-meter patio and was covered by an old awning with no view or ventilation whatsoever. They didn't even offer me water, much less let me rest. Because of my serious respiratory condition, I requested another room, and they took me up to the attic, a small, cold, very cold, and damp room with a tiny window. A birdcage, unimaginable in this type of hotel. It's inhumane treatment, not even given to a beggar, of whom I encountered near the Vatican when I left this horrible, nightmarish hotel. According to the only receptionist, there were no rooms available. I had no option where I could finally rest at that hour and take my urgently needed medication. This insolent, rude, and inhuman receptionist, given the circumstances, was inconceivable in the hospitality industry, especially in a hotel of this caliber that prides itself on its quality. This individual, Federico, or whatever his name is, was so negligent that he indirectly invited me to leave at 11:00 PM in the middle of the night in Rome and during a heavy storm. Only one of the two concierges, whose name I unfortunately don't recall, was there to thank. Next to him was a young woman, equally arrogant and insolent, who clearly didn't know how to live up to her job. She had also been on my previous trip, completely unaware of what true luxury hospitality is all about. The aforementioned concierge, whom I thank for his professionalism in trying to convince me to stay and prevent Federico from forcing me to leave, was met with an attitude of inability to resolve the situation and to lower his arrogance and rudeness towards me. I'm not exactly a senior citizen, and he showed me no respect whatsoever. The concierge tried to shield me with an umbrella as I left to get a taxi and offered to accompany me so I wouldn't get wet. I refused, because the damage was already done. A taxi arrived and took me far away from that nightmare of a hotel and its absurd, unprofessional, and utterly incompetent characters. Thanks to Federico Frederic, or whatever your name is, thanks to your incompetence and rudeness at the Maria Villa Agrippina, I was able to experience a wonderful, welcoming, splendid, and fantastic 5-star hotel on Via Veneto. I will be returning very soon. This Frederick or Federico behaved more like a jailer than a hospitality professional, much less one from The Leading Hotels of the World, which he was at the hotel where I stayed for several days later on Via Veneto—look it up if you're interested. I won't be returning to Meliá for a long time, not to any of their hotels, and my Platinum membership will expire. It doesn't matter, though. There's a whole world of great hotel professionals out there who make for a welcoming, comfortable, and truly "leading hotels of the world" experience. Regarding the employee Federico, he's already quite the character, an absurdly useless person. But Meliá, if you don't want to keep losing regular customers like I did with this incident at Villa Agrippina (I was there for 9 days, also during Christmas), take note. This is the first and last review I'll ever write, and I'm not exactly young anymore. I won't be returning. It's a shame about the poor treatment I received. You've lost a fantastic customer. And the attitude and behavior of that receptionist, a certain Federico or whatever his name is, is not only grounds for a complaint, but also for disciplinary action. You need to get your employees on the right track, or it will be too late. Be very careful if you go to this hotel! It's not what it seems, nor what it's advertised to be. The staff are simply absurd and unprepared, unpleasant from every point of view. As a consequence of everything I experienced in this horrific place, I had a nasty fall at 11:30 at night in the pouring rain just as I was leaving the hotel, and I broke my kneecap. I could say much more, but this is enough for now. I don't intend to return to this hotel or any other Meliá hotel in the world ever again, and I will let my Meliá Rewards Platinum membership expire."

"This is a very nice hotel. The people are very friendly. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The Vatican is a short walk and there are many excellent restaurants within A short walk."
