PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into a protected cove on Sardinia's southeastern coast, where macchia-covered hills roll down to the famously translucent waters of the Gulf of Marinella, Hotel Abi d'Oru has long represented a quieter, less theatrical alternative to the jet-set theatrics of the Costa Smeralda's northern reaches. The property's low-rise terracotta-roofed buildings step back from a private white-sand beach in a loose village formation, their warm ochre and salmon render absorbing the Sardinian light in a way that feels genuinely rooted in the vernacular rather than imposed upon it. Landscaped lawns and a reed-fringed lagoon separate the main accommodation blocks from the shore, a spatial generosity that gives the resort an unhurried, almost domestic scale. The interiors balance two generations of sensibility. Older rooms carry the warmer register of a classic Italian beach hotel — travertine tile floors in a diamond grid, brass wall sconces, white-painted cabinetry, floral quilted bedspreads in taupe and cream — while more recently refreshed accommodation shifts toward a cleaner contemporary palette: teal velvet headboards, honeycomb-embossed copper-leaf sideboards, textural wall-hung tapestries, and linen curtains in warm sand tones that frame direct sea views. At the beachside club, white-painted timber pergola structures carry teak-framed sofas upholstered in white canvas, the whole arrangement opening directly onto the sand. The elevated restaurant terrace, framed by exposed white-painted beams and wrought-iron balustrades, captures the bay at its most cinematic in the hour before dark.

About

The story of the Abi d'Oru is one of ingenuity and hard work: this historic hotel, the first built in Porto Rotondo and the Costa Smeralda, has been creating 5-star relaxation and happy memories, imbued with that special Sardinian brand of warm hospitality, since 1963. Three generations of guests love its unmistakable charms: wonderfully attentive staff, a golden beach lapped by the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Marinella and the sea breeze that carries into the rooms each morning. The hotel’s characteristic hexagonal pavilions are home to 130 rooms including 17 Junior Suites, 18 Suites and 2 Signature Suites as well as 3 restaurants and common spaces served by 3 bars, and a modern spa that opens onto the grounds. Bee Happy Kids Club is a space where our little guests can have fun. Private gardens border the beach and include a natural pond, a large heated pool and a relaxation zone with hydro-massage.

"Me and my, now husband, stayed here at the end of September into the first week of October for our belated honeymoon. It was very quiet and extremely clean. BEACH The private beach here was absolutely incredible! I've never known a sea so crystal clear, the sand was also very clear with hardly any large stones and seaweed. I imagine the team clear away a large portion of any seaweed, although, it'd not exactly seaweed like you would normally get in the med, it was more little flakes of it. The team that provide towels and sunbeds are so very helpful. Taking you to a sunbed that you would prefer and setting it all out for you :-) We visited the beach bar, which was rather expensive, albeit I've been told is the going rate for the area, but something to consider when only going B&B. POOL The pool again, incredibly clean and very quiet. With members of the staff aiding with towels and getting sunbeds ready. Pool bar is great for getting some light lunch, with the gelato and coffees being a massive hit for us. Probably the second best macchiato I've had! Deivis at the pool bar was such a lovely man, always more than happy to help with a smile and no feel that this was ever at all forced. BREAKFAST & FOOD At breakfast there is a vast array of foods available. Hot scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, beans, courgette, mushrooms, sausage etc, with the option of having eggs cooked in a variety of ways, including an omelette. A wealth of fruit, cereals and yoghurts too. With the main attraction being the pastry selections, croissants, pain au chocs, vanilla filled rolls - just so many to be able to remember, but they were delightful. We treated ourselves to an evening meal at the Mediterraneo restaurant, it was 80 euros per person, for a 4 course meal. For starters there is a buffet style array of foods, followed by first course, second course and dessert. It was by far one of the best 4 course sittings I have had the opportunity to experience. All savoury food dazzled my taste buds. BUT the dessert, oh.my.gosh - food for the soul!! I would like to mention a particular lady called Debby, who was the most friendly there! I can't say I'm used to a 5 star hotel and she never ever made me feel inadequate or judged, always a smile on her face and very approachable. LOCATION You are located away from any supermarkets, with the closest being in Marinella, which is around a 15 minute walk away. There weren't masses of trinket shops around, but part of that was probably due to us arriving as the season was closing down. Porto Rotondo is around a 50 minute walk away, although the hotel does offer a shuttle van, which operates outwards twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon. Again, this might be different at other points in the holiday season. Also, this is the closest area that has a pharmacy, so just something to note. There is a train station very close by, however the trains did not operate all that frequently - again could be due to being at the tail end of the season. However again, very very clean! Taco's are rather expensive, to get to Olbia from the hotel was around 60 euros for a 20 minute ride - it is the going rate, so not something out of kilter. But something to consider when travelling to Sardinia as a whole. Has to be said, that the hotel is great, without a shadow of a doubt I would have placed this at 5 stars, and would have been a strong 4.5, the only slight downfall was the location - which is something I probably should have researched beforehand."

"I booked Hotel Abi d’Oru expecting a seamless 5-star experience, but several aspects were disappointing. The good: – Breakfast offered plenty of options and was excellent. – The beach was beautiful, with chairs and towels readily available. – All of the hotel’s restaurants served great food with attentive service. – The restaurant and beach staff were consistently polite, helpful, and quick to assist. The bad: – On arrival, the room lock was broken. Maintenance partially fixed the bolt, but the electronic exterior lock was loose and couldn’t be properly repaired. Unfortunately, no alternative rooms were available. – Management was dismissive when addressing issues, which negatively affected the stay. – The fire alarm went off at 11 p.m. during my stay, which was very disruptive. – Housekeeping didn’t consistently replenish toiletries, so I had to call for basic items. – Housekeeping occasionally removed our robes without replenishing, which was inconvenient. – The gym wasn’t usable in the morning, as the power had been switched off. – For laundry, the only option for pressing a shirt was a full wash-and-iron service (around $20 per shirt). There were no irons available for guests, and only one communal steamer, quite limiting for a 5-star property. – The beach area had persistent solicitation from local sellers, and the hotel didn’t seem to manage it. – The drinks are overpriced, though that’s somewhat expected at a resort of this level. Overall: The property has potential, but operational issues like these detract from the experience. At a five star level, I expected better preparation, consistency, and guest support."
