PB hotel design editorial

Arranged around a cobblestoned cortile with a balustraded fountain at its center, the neoclassical complex that houses Palazzo Doglio was purpose-built in Cagliari's Marina district — a new construction that commits fully to the architectural language of the Sardinian capital's historic centre rather than importing a foreign idiom. The property, which opened in 2019, was developed by the Mazzella family and draws its interiors from a palette that negotiates between civic grandeur outside and something more intimate within: grey-painted panelled joinery fitted floor to ceiling, brass threshold details at the base of cabinetry, and Carrara marble slab flooring that carries through guestrooms and public spaces alike. The rooms are wrapped in deep tobacco-brown walls, with upholstered headboards framed by mirror-panelled wardrobes and brass-backed niches providing focused accent lighting — the overall atmosphere closer to a well-dressed private apartment than a conventional hotel room. Balconies fitted with white-painted balustrades look directly onto the internal piazza below, where restaurants spill into the open courtyard beneath cobalt awnings. The osteria dining room introduces a more emphatic register: crimson velvet banquettes, brocade-panelled doors, and sculptural brass tube chandeliers that throw warm light across panelled wainscoting and mirrored wall sections. Contemporary canvas works in the upper-floor rooms — vivid, graphic, loosely figurative — provide deliberate counterpoint to the classical envelope, keeping the 57-room property from settling too comfortably into period pastiche.

Palazzo Doglio Reviews

"I visited the hotel with my wife and our two children and stayed from 17th to 21st February. We chose this hotel for our winter holidays, looking forward to a relaxing stay while exploring Sardinia, as we planned to spend most days travelling around the island. Our first night was perfect; however, on the second morning we were woken at 8:30am by very loud construction noise, including hammering and drilling. This woke my entire family and made my younger children cry. I did not raise a complaint immediately as I assumed it would only happen once. Unfortunately, the same situation happened again the following morning at 8:30am with extremely loud noise. My wife and children were very disturbed, especially as we had not been informed in advance that construction works would be taking place. I reported the issue to the Front Office team that morning. They kindly offered to move us to another room; however, as it was our last night and we were leaving early the next day, changing rooms at that stage was not convenient for us. We had intentionally not booked breakfast included because we wanted to rest and sleep longer after spending our days travelling around the island. The repeated noise significantly affected our ability to relax and enjoy our stay. At check-out, the gentleman at the Front Office apologised and mentioned that the bill would be adjusted. However, only a €30 discount was applied. Considering the inconvenience caused and the standard expected from a five-star hotel with such a strong reputation, my family and I left feeling very disappointed with how our concerns were handled. I was also surprised by the lack of empathy. After explaining that my family had their rest disturbed on two of the four days of our stay, there was not even a small gesture such as a card or an amenity to acknowledge the situation. The hotel itself is beautiful; however, the customer service was unfortunately one of the worst experiences I have had in a five-star hotel. I also sent an email expressing my dissatisfaction after the stay but never received a response. I would like to highlight that the housekeeping team was fantastic and very professional throughout our stay."
