PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a granite hillside in Sardinia's Gallura region, between the village of San Pantaleo and the distant shimmer of the Costa Smeralda, a cluster of low stone buildings arranged like a small forgotten hamlet gave Petra Segreta its founding logic. The property was developed to mirror the traditional stazzi — the dry-stone farmsteads that have defined this landscape for centuries — with rough-hewn granite walls, terracotta roof tiles, and single-storey pavilions that step with the natural topography rather than imposing upon it. The aerial view confirms the conceit: from above, the property barely distinguishes itself from the surrounding scrubland and granite outcrops, the kidney-shaped pool the only element that announces a hospitality function. Inside, the interiors sustain that agrarian restraint without tipping into austerity. Rooms are finished in trowelled lime plaster in warm sand tones, raw timber four-poster beds with rope-wrapped posts anchoring the larger suites alongside kilim-influenced rugs and colorful textile artwork. Ceilings in the restaurant are laid with a dense grid of stripped wooden poles — a direct reference to traditional Sardinian construction — while floor-to-ceiling glazing frames views across the macchia toward the sea. The palette throughout is drawn almost entirely from the land itself: granite grey, lavender silver, the bleached ochre of summer grass. Wicker terrace furniture and pergolas covered in climbing plants complete a setting that feels less like a designed hotel than a private estate assembled over several generations.

About

Hidden amongst the hills of San Pantaleo, overlooking the Costa Smeralda, Petra Segreta Resort offers the perfect combination of tranquil country charm with the five-star service of a Relais & Chateaux property. Nestled at the heart of five hectares of Mediterranean vegetation, amid essences of myrtle, mastic and juniper, the hotel offers an elegant club-house with welcoming rooms warmed in springtime by open fires, a bar with large windows overlooking the sea, restaurants Il Fuoco Sacro and L’Osteria del Mirto and, set a little apart, the wellness area and pool. The estate hosts 25 rooms and suites (including 6 with private heated pools) inspired by the traditional Gallura stazzi - the low, stone buildings typical of the region – and offering beautiful views over the La Maddalena archipelago.

"We stayed at the Petra Segreta Resort for 3 nights at the end of October 2025. We were very pleased to find out we were upgraded to a mini-suite villa with private pool! The resort is amazing – set in beautiful grounds overlooking the ocean and mountains in the distance, and integrated into the Sardinian landscape. The staff is also fantastic and gave us recommendations for dining and which beaches to visit. The breakfasts were fantastic and offered three different styles of Sardinian food. The intimate boutique atmosphere and high-end service made our stay at Petre Segreta a highlight of our trip!"

"Lovely peaceful retreat with the most amazing views. Delicious food - tasting menu was outstanding as was the breakfast and also the bistro - the food at Petra is exceptional. The food and service at Petra is definitely 5 star. Very rustic rooms so don't expect 5 star luxury, and don't expect white fluffy towels, but very clean and comfortable beds. Lovely friendly staff. Hellish road up to the resort so be mindful of oncoming traffic. San Pantaleo is a beautiful village and well worth a visit. Tip: take a plug in insect/mosquito repellent - housekeeping leave windows and doors open whilst cleaning and the pesky things get in."

"High up in the hills above Olbia with magnificent views over the islands and sea. Each room is private, discretely placed and built into the granite hill side - designed by the owner who is an architect and can be regularly seen in the hotel. There are 3 restaurants. One with a Michelin star (Secreta Fuoco), one roof top restaurant and one near the pool. Totally isolated with nothing nearby - absolutely quiet, no traffic noise or airplanes. The staff are very helpful and friendly, particularly Francesco on the front desk and Giuseppe plus others in the restaurants."
