PB hotel design editorial

Directly below the ancient Greek theatre of Taormina — one of the most intact Hellenistic amphitheatres in the Mediterranean, with Etna and the Ionian Sea as its permanent backdrop — a blush-pink neoclassical villa has received guests since 1873, making the Grand Hotel Timeo the oldest hotel on Sicily's most celebrated clifftop town. The aerial view confirms the relationship: theatre and hotel share the same rocky promontory, the cypress-lined gardens threading between them in a composition that feels less designed than accrued over centuries. Belmond's stewardship, which brought a careful renovation in 2012, respected that accumulated quality rather than imposing a legible contemporary signature. Inside, the 70 rooms carry the atmosphere of a private Sicilian villa assembled over generations rather than dressed to a brief. Plasterwork cornices with foliate detailing crown barrel-vaulted ceilings in the upper-floor suites, while marquetry commodes, gilt-framed mirrors, and carved walnut headboards in gold-leaf baroque style populate the rooms with period furniture that sits naturally against wide-plank parquet and silk-mix drapery in warm stone and taupe. The terrace restaurant, shaded beneath a retractable white canvas canopy and strung with iron lanterns, gives onto the Strait of Messina at dusk — a dining room where the architecture defers entirely to the view. The kidney-shaped pool terrace, framed by terracotta urns and stone balustrades, extends the garden's Italianate grammar to the water's edge.

"Absolutely beautiful property with stunning priceless views of Mount Etna. The San Don does have nicer rooms - but the overall experience here is far far better and that is what makes your holiday. We cannot state how impeccable the service is for a property of this size - personalised and genuine - intuitive - a rare thing that they anticipate your needs. . All staff from the most junior to managerial roles are excellent can hold a conversation etc. we stay quite frequently at Claridges and in some respects it reminds you of there - nothing is too much. Incredible food at the hotel and the sister property at the beach. My wife used the spa this year which is now permanent Dior fixture and it was incredible. Amazing massage - again rivalled the ones my wife has in claridges. Easy shuttle to the beach which is a massive bonus in Taormina. Rooms have beautiful views but are a tad older and require updating it but the beauty of the property, the food and the service make up for it. Albeit we recommend taking a more straightforward room category."

"Cruise stop in Messina and as I had holidayed in Taormina a few months previously, recommend we visit. On the day, we decided at the last minute to get off the ship mid morning as a few of us had been ill with a bug. Arranged a private transfer at the port and our driver whisked us through. Unfortunately we only had 2.5hrs so we rushed through the sites to allow enough time for another visit to this hotels terrace for drinks as I really enjoyed here on my last trip. Staff were excellent, setting is relaxed and comfortable and the drinks choice is very good. Not forgetting the wonderful views. A must stop even if you only manage a fleeting visit."

"We enjoyed 5 days at this wonderful hotel. The view from the terrace is fabulous, the Belmond team are excellent and the bed was probably the best we’ve slept in anywhere."
