PB hotel design editorial

Somewhere in the wheat-rolling interior of Sicily, halfway between Palermo and the Madonie mountains above Polizzi Generosa, an eighteenth-century working masseria was quietly transformed into one of the island's most grounded rural retreats. Masseria Susafa has been in the same family for generations, and the conversion into a small hotel — twelve rooms distributed across low stone buildings thataterra-cotta-tiled roofs tie together — was handled with the restraint of people who understood what they already had. The rubble-stone walls, which carry the warm buff tone of local limestone, were left entirely intact, their roughness framing doorways fitted with dark-painted timber and original iron hardware. Inside, the approach divides usefully between two registers. Older rooms layer terracotta brick floors with antique walnut commodes, oval mirrors in warm-toned frames, and ochre wool throws folded at the bed's foot — the atmosphere of a Sicilian country house assembled over time rather than designed in one pass. Newer rooms strip things back: whitewashed plaster, black-steel sliding wardrobe frames, sisal underfoot, and exposed stone walls left raw beside the bed. The former winery, its barrel-vaulted ceiling now whitened and fitted with pendant lamps, serves as the bar, oak casks flanking mid-century armchairs in mustard and red. The infinity pool faces open farmland and distant ridgelines, a pergola draped in vine providing the only shade.

Masseria Susafa Reviews

"We spent our honeymoon at Susafa, and it was beyond special. The entire experience felt serene and peaceful — it’s very remote (30 minutes away from the nearest town!) so it’s the kind of place where you can completely unwind and disconnect from the outside world. The rooms were simple in design yet beautifully done, with a quiet elegance that perfectly matched the surroundings. We loved the long, lazy lunches at the restaurant near the pool, where the atmosphere was relaxed and the view stunning. In the evenings, we had dinner in the main restaurant — the service was excellent, attentive, and warm throughout our stay. If there’s one thing we might suggest, it would be to offer a bit more variation on the menu beyond the tasting menu, just to mix things up for longer stays. The Sicilian cooking course with Melissa was an absolute highlight — fun, hands-on, and full of Sicilian flavour as was the Romantic Dinner on the terrace overlooking the fields. Susafa was the perfect place to celebrate something as special as a honeymoon."

"Susafa is a very special place. A working farm with an expansive property that has been in a family for generations. The main property has been converted into a super-luxury boutique hotel with beautiful rooms and common areas. The place is serene and it immediately plunges you into vacation / relaxation mode. The food is excellent as is the warm service. The only suggestions would be adding a small formal spa and gym which are probably in the works and no doubt tastefully. And maybe a little more variation on the menu- the food is outstanding but maybe a few more choices here and there. Susafa is one of a kind!!"

"You must keep that in mind this is a working farm with luxury accommodations. It is not a 5 star hotel with every amenity possible. So this is not for everyone. The architecture and interior design is beautiful the owner put a great emphasis on detail and design and it shows.! The bar room is one of the most beautiful rooms i have been in. The rooms are lovely and cozy comfy. The food at dinner was clean healthy good/fair but very small portions. The breakfast was by far the best breakfast of any accommodation. And worth a stay just for breakfast. The chef was there to cook your farm fresh eggs any style you desired, nuts, fresh produce to juice, cakes, tarts, croissants, local meats and beautiful local cheeses ,home made butter, home made breads, cookeis all made on sight, it goes on and on. The hotel is quite maybe to quite needs, some music by pool for my taste.I felt very special to be able to be part of history staying in this labor of love in the resurrection of this family farm. They loan you a small book to read in your room about the story & history significance of this beautiful place on the planet. My only complaint is that the owners beautiful dog Bruno is able to run freely and greet people , which is great but there are two very sweet dogs that are locked in a very small caged area, cruel conditions under the sun.,No shade, no trees in the hot sun with a "tiny" dog house ,not suitable for winter or summer for proper shelter. They are not taken out for walks ( there was no door or gate to their area) not suer if they had water and they look at you with dental playful eyes saying please pet me and get me out of this prison , look on their faces. This was so upsetting, that the owners could be so cruel. I know it is Sicily but the owners are educated, well read and traveled people. This ruined my lovely stay at this magnificent working farm."

"The devil is truly in the details, and unfortunately, this establishment seems more focused on upselling and profits than on delivering a quality experience. Our room was disappointingly decorated. There was a missing curtain on the window, and the door curtain—there should have been two—was broken at the top. To make matters worse, the duvet didn’t even have a proper cover. Instead, they used a flat sheet, an uncovered duvet inner, and another flat sheet on top. The bathroom was no better, with white mold creeping up two of the walls. For a place that aims to provide a memorable stay, small touches like fruit or flowers were noticeably absent (Room 13, loft room). Although the food was good, it was severely overpriced considering what you get. Overall, I would not recommend this establishment. The lack of attention to basic details and the overpricing really detract from what could have been a much better experience. --- Let me know if you'd like fur"
