PB hotel design editorial

Somewhere in the wheat-rolling interior of Sicily, halfway between Palermo and the Madonie mountains above Polizzi Generosa, an eighteenth-century working masseria was quietly transformed into one of the island's most grounded rural retreats. Masseria Susafa has been in the same family for generations, and the conversion into a small hotel — twelve rooms distributed across low stone buildings thataterra-cotta-tiled roofs tie together — was handled with the restraint of people who understood what they already had. The rubble-stone walls, which carry the warm buff tone of local limestone, were left entirely intact, their roughness framing doorways fitted with dark-painted timber and original iron hardware. Inside, the approach divides usefully between two registers. Older rooms layer terracotta brick floors with antique walnut commodes, oval mirrors in warm-toned frames, and ochre wool throws folded at the bed's foot — the atmosphere of a Sicilian country house assembled over time rather than designed in one pass. Newer rooms strip things back: whitewashed plaster, black-steel sliding wardrobe frames, sisal underfoot, and exposed stone walls left raw beside the bed. The former winery, its barrel-vaulted ceiling now whitened and fitted with pendant lamps, serves as the bar, oak casks flanking mid-century armchairs in mustard and red. The infinity pool faces open farmland and distant ridgelines, a pergola draped in vine providing the only shade.

"We didn't want to leave. What an oasis in Sicilian country side. Even though we had just one night there we left relaxed. Would love to go back another time and spend time walking, reading by pool, taking cooking classes. The grounds are incredible."

"One of the most beautiful properties I’ve ever stayed at and my favorite in Sicily. While I didn’t stay at one of the notable properties in Taormina, and there’s many to choose from, this is more my tempo away from the touristy jaunts. The service is lovely and understated in a good way, the rooms are beautiful and well appointed, the sheets are soft and yummy, and the food is delicious. I had a wonderful massage under a carob tree one afternoon. My friend and took a fun cooking class learning to make arancini. The restaurant manager was a delight and suggested one wonderful wine after another. I highly suggest you take the time to hike from and around the property, you can go for miles and the views are stunning. Just can’t say enough about this place, I’ll go back if I return to Sicily."

"We spent our honeymoon at Susafa, and it was beyond special. The entire experience felt serene and peaceful — it’s very remote (30 minutes away from the nearest town!) so it’s the kind of place where you can completely unwind and disconnect from the outside world. The rooms were simple in design yet beautifully done, with a quiet elegance that perfectly matched the surroundings. We loved the long, lazy lunches at the restaurant near the pool, where the atmosphere was relaxed and the view stunning. In the evenings, we had dinner in the main restaurant — the service was excellent, attentive, and warm throughout our stay. If there’s one thing we might suggest, it would be to offer a bit more variation on the menu beyond the tasting menu, just to mix things up for longer stays. The Sicilian cooking course with Melissa was an absolute highlight — fun, hands-on, and full of Sicilian flavour as was the Romantic Dinner on the terrace overlooking the fields. Susafa was the perfect place to celebrate something as special as a honeymoon."
