PB hotel design editorial

On the lower slopes of Etna, where centuries of volcanic eruption have built some of Sicily's most fertile agricultural land, a nineteenth-century baronial estate was converted into Monaci delle Terre Nere — its name, monks of the black earth, acknowledging both the property's monastic origins and the dark basalt lava stone that defines the landscape beneath it. The aerial views confirm what the name implies: the hotel is genuinely absorbed into its terrain, a long lap pool and scattered sun loungers arranged among citrus groves and ancient olive trees, the Ionian Sea visible in the distance beyond the coastal plain. The interiors navigate a tension that most agriturismi attempt and few resolve — how to introduce contemporary comfort without erasing the agricultural character that justifies the visit. Here the answer involves exposed timber roof beams left rough above lime-plastered walls, wide-plank oak floors laid alongside raw lava stone doorframes, and a collecting sensibility that places large-format artworks directly on the floor rather than hanging them, as if the rooms were still being assembled rather than finished. White-framed four-poster beds and Flos globe bedside lamps read as deliberate choices against the rusticity rather than concessions to it, and cast-iron wood-burning stoves in some rooms treat the volcanic winter as a feature. The outdoor dining terrace, shaded by tensioned canvas sails among the trees, extends this indoor-outdoor logic with characteristic lightness.

About

Stylish and sustainable, Monaci delle Terre Nere is a luxury hotel and countryside retreat situated on the slopes of Mount Etna, with views over the Mediterranean sea. With an 18th century villa at its heart, the eco-friendly estate has 27 elegantly-designed rooms, suites and villas in renovated farm buildings, scattered among 60 acres of fruit orchards, terraced vineyards and gardens. With two restaurants: Locanda Nerello serving creative cuisine, and a poolside restaurant which is perfect for casual dining, the hotel champions slow food and many of the ingredients served are grown on the farm or are sourced from zero-km producers. Charming Convivium Bar serves imaginative Sicilian cocktails and the extensive grounds and scenic pool offers plenty of natural beauty. The expert hotel team can arrange Sicilian cooking classes with the Chef, Etna wine tastings guided by the head sommelier, horseriding, yoga, private boat trips and even helicopter tours from the estate's own helipad, to explore the volcano and coastline. Monaci delle Terre Nere is a peaceful base to explore Etna, Taormina, Catania and the beautiful eastern coast of Sicily, and is ideal for couples, families and friends.

"Everything about this hotel is wonderful, except the rooms (which is kind of a reason to stay someplace). The setting is beautiful; an expansive agricultural property with attractive terraced vineyards. The restaurant is outstanding; breakfast, lunch and dinner were great. The staff is outstanding as well, especially the concierge who helped with local activities. The pool is nice, with sea views. There are also good views of Etna. The rooms are spread throughout the large property, and golf carts are available to ride to your room is you don’t want to walk. The property’s buildings are generally quite old which generally works if updated properly - see Il Borgo, L’Albereta, Castello Banfi, Villa Cordevigo and Borgo dei Conti for just a few great R&C examples and Casali di Casole for an amazing conversion of old farmhouses. This unfortunately did not happen here. The room was large but seemingly furnished with uncomfortable garage sale rejects and plastic dining chairs Walmart would be embarrassed to sell. The bath was just OK except the shower was tiny and cheap with a slippery plastic floor. There are better showers in a Super 8. The mattress was hard as a rock and the only pillow choice was a hard thick foam one (“there are no feather pillows on the entire estate”). There were a lot of ants in the room; this is a bit of a challenge in a rural location but somehow Country House Villadorata managed it. We had to clean out cobwebs. A major disappointment, especially at this price point."

"This outstanding property is stretched over acres of beautiful countryside at the bottom of the Etna volcano. It is part of the Relais Châteaux collection, so you can expect 5 star service and amenities. Rooms and suites are spread across the property, in the middle of vineyards, lemon trees etc. The views are breathtaking, the staff is extremely helpful, nice and professional. A small downside is the under equipped gym which deserves an upgrade. I truly recommend this property as a starting point to the wonders of this region, or just for a calm and relaxing stay in the Sicily countryside."
