PB hotel design editorial

Perched on Taormina's clifftop above the Ionian Sea, where dry-stone terraces cascade through subtropical gardens toward a cerulean pool, a late nineteenth-century villa carries the name of Arts and Crafts pioneer Charles Robert Ashbee — the British designer who lived and worked in the town in the early 1900s and whose influence on the property's sensibility extends well beyond the nameplate. The Ashbee Hotel was established within this belle époque structure, its white-stuccoed facade and loggia roofline sitting in quiet adjacency to the domed church tower visible from the garden, the whole composition set against the Sicilian coastal ridge dropping toward Giardini Naxos below. The interiors take a more declarative approach than the building's restrained exterior might suggest. Guestrooms are dressed in damask-effect wallcovering in warm ivory, wainscoting picked out in white, and wide-plank bleached oak floors, with purple velvet armchairs introducing a note of controlled theatre against the pale ground. The restaurant sharpens the contrast further — bold black-and-white vertical stripes covering the walls entirely, a Murano glass chandelier in deep red suspended above white-clothed tables and pale ash dining chairs, the parquet floor grounding the drama in something warmer. Outside, the terraced gardens step down through lava-stone retaining walls planted with agave and dwarf palm, stone-paved paths connecting the fountain court to the pool deck, framing a view of the bay that has drawn artists and writers to Taormina for well over a century.

"Some good things (expected for a 5 star hotel), some excellent, and some BAD. Location was good (close to main street, less than 5 min. up hill), but overall might reconsider staying. The good - Bathrooms very clean and AC was very cold during a historic heatwave. But see below because AC was not without issues. Pool area was beautiful and quiet. The excellent - Service. Alex, Marta, and the breakfast team especially stood out. Made my birthday extra special and made every morning lovely. Housekeeping also did a great job. Reception was good at answering questions via email and helping arrange taxis. View was perfect from the pool area. The BAD - Room seemed to be infested with mosquitoes. Woke up covered in bites the first night, and then killed at least 5 every night after that. Did not ever have the door or terrace door open such that they should’ve been coming in as much as they did. There was definitely some kind of nest or something somewhere. Also BAD - NOISE. Every single night, at odd hours (2-4 AM), there would be disposal of garbage and glass outside (manually and with vehicles that was so loud it would wake you up. Also, the AC itself was extremely loud."

"One of the most special Hotels we have stayed at in one of the most beautiful cities in our travels thus far. The Ashbee surpassed our expectations. From the staff to the accommodations. From the views of the Mediterranean, hillside and Main Land- to the pool, dining rooms, both upstairs and ground level and library. All timeless. It is located at the beginning of the city. Quietly located behind magical gates. We will be back if ever in Taormina again."
