PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a limestone promontory above the Gulf of Palermo, its ochre-washed Liberty-style facade rising directly from the sea cliffs, this former Florio family villa carries one of the most layered histories in Sicilian hospitality. Commissioned by the Florios — the extraordinary merchant dynasty who shaped modern Sicily — and completed around 1900 to designs attributed to Ernesto Basile, the building that became Villa Igiea A Rocco Forte Hotel was originally conceived as a sanatorium before the family reclaimed it as a private residence. Basile, the Palermo architect who brought Sicilian floral ornament into conversation with Viennese Secessionism, left his mark most indelibly in the frescoed dining hall, still considered among the finest examples of Italian Liberty decoration anywhere. The 2021 renovation, guided by Olga Polizzi with interiors developed through the Rocco Forte design team, pressed the existing architecture into a palette of sage green and warm white that complements rather than competes with Basile's plasterwork. Guestrooms alternate between two registers: some furnished with dark four-poster beds, tobacco-coloured upholstery, and rattan armchairs beneath Murano glass chandeliers in petal form; others dressed in the softer sage scheme, with upholstered headboards framed by hand-blocked fabric panels and botanical cushions drawing on the villa's garden character. At the pool terrace, a cluster of salvaged classical columns planted at the water's edge frames views across to Monte Pellegrino — antiquity deployed as garden ornament in a way that feels entirely, naturally Sicilian.

"Fantastic upgraded room - clean, beautifully appointed and luxurious. Excellent linens. Great service. Parts of hotel, particularly outdoors (though low season) rather tired. Incredible breakfast"

"Simply bad! They want to be ponzi and can’t keep up with the standards! 30 € for a spaghetti pomodoro???? Are we kidding? My carbonara came cold, then they had to make it again and it was literally horrible, I described it as the worst ever. My fault as I should have gone to one of the local restaurant."

"My wife and I recently stayed at this fabulous resort for 5 nights in Palermo on our visit to Sicily.. We had a suite that was very spacious and beautifully decorated with a huge outdoor terrace that looked out over the Gulf of Palermo and Tyrrhenian Sea. The resort is luxurious and beautiful in all respects. The grounds were exceptional and the entire hotel was immaculate from top to bottom. The history and rich heritage of the resort alone is worth the visit. With past guests like Princess Grace, Prince Rainier, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Greta Garbo and many others. The most impressive aspect of this gem was the service! If I could give it 6 stars I would. Our check-in experience was perfect in every way. We had an exceptional guest relations manager Dalila who held our hand during the whole process. We have stayed at many highly rated properties and she is one of the best we have had! In fact the entire staff was fantastic . The restaurant and bar at Villa Igea is top notch! The food and service is outstanding thanks to employees like Marco, Cristian, Vincenzo, Giovani , Roy and Roberto I’m probably leaving out other outstanding members of the staff like housekeeping and turndown that were so accommodating and nice to us. We would highly recommend that you make this a definite destination on your trip to Sicily!!!"
