PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a tufa cliff above the Bay of Naples, where the land drops sharply to the water and Vesuvius holds its position on the horizon, this is one of the oldest continuously operating grand hotels on the Italian peninsula — a property that has absorbed nearly two centuries of European travel culture without losing its essential character. The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria has been in the hands of the Fiorentino family since 1834, and that continuity shows in every considered detail: the ochre-washed Liberty-style facade with its arched loggia and white-painted balustrades, the clifftop terraces where cast-iron bistro chairs sit beneath ancient umbrella pines and marble statuary, the interiors that move between ornate Belle Époque rooms with hand-painted wall panels in sage and rose and more recently renovated suites finished in herringbone parquet, cream velvet armchairs, and coffered ceilings with concealed cove lighting. Across its 84 rooms spread through several interconnected buildings — including the original nineteenth-century villa — the design language never fully modernises, which is precisely its strength. Rooms in the older wing carry frescoed walls, Murano glass sconces, and lacquered white armoires that place them firmly in the Neapolitan aristocratic tradition. The pool terrace, sheltered by stone pines and clipped hedging, pulls back from the cliff edge into a garden that Enrico Caruso, one of the hotel's most celebrated guests, reportedly walked daily. That layered history is the architecture here.

"The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is the peak of perfection. Small details like fresh flowers in the room and a very attentive staff compliment the gorgeous grounds and ideal location."

"World class hotel which has improved over the years.... this time one of the improvements was the introduction of "to order" eggs/ omelettes at the excellent breakfast. Pool, housekeeping, bar, management (Tiziana and the family) and all staff are marvelous....nice to see strong continuity of staff. Lunch at the Orangerie was very pleasant... but sometimes pizzas and club sandwiches were a little disappointing.... Dinner at Le Bosquet was an experience - though better if the terrace is open rather than having to eat indoors. Do book a room with a view over the bay! We hope to be back shortly....."

"We have traveled all over the world and have stayed at some amazing places; this hotel is one of the best hotels in the world, worthy of a good review. It’s the details that matter here. The room: from the plush, oversized bath towels, thick bath mats, Dyson hairdryer, ample clothes hangers, to the high quality toilet tissue… high quality comfortable bed, bedding and pillows… heated floors, a scale and makeup mirror in the bathroom.. to the turndown service with plenty of aqua pana water… our stay was beyond comfortable. We spent each morning and evening on our balcony enjoying the pristine view. Service: the service was consistently exceptional from our check in (greeting us by name as our driver pulled up to the hotel) to our 4 am checkout where they toted our bags to our early morning ride to the airport. Restaurant service was consistently prompt without being overbearing. The hotel has a very convenient elevator that takes you down to the port via a private (hotel guest use only) tunnel. Everything about our stay was wonderful. Highly recommend lunch on their terrace. Their pasta is some of the best in Italy. We booked via the Amex fine hotels and resorts website and got a room upgrade upon arrival. Overall a spectacular stay and experience. Tip: we typically rent a car when in Italy and are very comfortable driving all over the country. We ditched the car for this trip and it’s something I would do again. Parking is difficult here. The hotel is in a fabulous location and you can get anywhere via walking. If you want to visit Capri or the Amalfi coast, do so via hired boat or car service."

"We have stayed in many fine hotels around the world, but this is one of the best we have ever stayed in. The service and people were absolutely wonderful from start to finish - warm and friendly, eager to help, responsive, and a true joy. The views we had from the terrace and our balcony were incredible. The restaurants on the property were excellent - breakfast, lunch on the terrace, and Bosquet were all delicious and luxurious. The property makes you feel like you are in a private mansion. My daughter’s first trip to Italy was made incredibly special by this wonderful hotel and its lovely people, and we will definitely be back, to the best hotel in Sorrento."

"We just came home from a 6-night stay in the Excelsior Vittoria hotel. It saddens us that our stay was average, even below average. Before coming to Sorrento we wrote to the concierge, asking to organize some excursions for us. I had to write three times before getting any answer (I even called between the 2nd and 3 mail as I thought there maybe were some technical issues). We booked 3 dinners in the restaurant Terraza Bosquet. After the first evening however we had to cancel the remaining evenings. We were seated at the table furthest to the left (in the area where there are only two tables). When the waiter was describing each dish, we couldn’t hear him at all over the noise from the table next to us. We told him three times that we couldn’t hear him, but got no response. The wines were very good, but the food was truly very, very mediocre. We dined at Restaurant George (Naples), Don Alfonso and Il Buco; each of these three restaurants is far, far better than Terraza Bosquet – there is simply no comparison. Before making the reservation I asked for the temperature of the pool, as we like very much to swim. I was told the pool was heated to 28-29°C. This was certainly not the case. The pool was way too cool. During the week passed at your hotel, we were only able to swim once, as the temperature was very cold. During the 6 days I only saw 2 persons having the courage to go in (a grandfather playing with his granddaughter). Plus there is this awful music, every day the same songs, we asked several times to stop the music, as I think everybody by the pool wants to relax, this however was not possible. We stayed in rooms 122-123. The views were astonishing. The cleaning was done efficiently. The WIFI however almost never worked. The moment we left the hotel for the town, all messages came suddenly through our phone. It was almost impossible to buy a new book on Kindle, I had to download 6 or 7 times. This is unacceptable. I asked for 4 large bottles of sparkling water every day, some days we received them, the last days I had to ask 3 times for the bottles to be delivered. We wanted to inform you so you could know. Some standards are really not met by this hotel. In addition: we wrote this email to the owner, and concierge of the hotel. However, 3 weeks after our stay, still got no reply..."
