PB hotel design editorial

Perched at the edge of Sorrento's tufa cliff above the Bay of Naples, where the ancient Romans once built their seaside villas, the Hotel Bellevue Syrene has been receiving guests since 1820, making it one of the oldest continuously operating hotels on the entire Campanian coast. The building's relationship with the rock beneath it is the defining architectural fact of the property — terraces carved into the volcanic stone, arched loggias embedded in the cliff face, and a pool terrace suspended above the water with Vesuvius fixed on the horizon, its silhouette framing every view to the north. Inside, the interiors move between two distinct registers. The standard rooms present whitewashed barrel-vaulted ceilings, polished white marble floors, and Murano crystal chandeliers, with cerulean accent cushions drawn from the sea below — spare and calm, their palette borrowed directly from the landscape. The suites, by contrast, carry original eighteenth-century painted ceilings in the Neapolitan baroque tradition, their cartouche-framed frescoes depicting mythological figures in ochre, rose, and sky blue, set against contemporary four-poster beds and violet velvet upholstery. The cliff-edge restaurant, its wide glazed apertures fixed on the bay at dusk, completes a property that has always understood its fundamental purpose: to give the view of Naples its proper architectural frame.

"Amazing hotel - 5 stars plus just as it says! Good was amazing and hotel staff couldn’t do enough. Slight mix up with allergy food in restaurant but waiter kindly removed item and whole team apologised immediately. Large spacious rooms with a view to die for! Old school service at its finest."

"Truly a beautiful hotel with an excellent location and exceptional service. We booked the most basic room, and it was still stunning, with incredible views and a small balcony. Breakfast was included and was excellent, and the live piano player added a lovely touch. They have a complimentary club room with soft drinks, juices, wine, and a few small bites. We ate dinner at the hotel on our first night. While it was a bit overpriced, the setting was beautiful, especially at sunset. Only note would be the beach club could use some improvements, particularly with the chairs and menu options, and the pool is very small, but overall, we had a fantastic stay and would definitely return."

"The Bellevue is a historical hotel perched above the Gulf of Naples yet still in the center of Sorrento. The common areas are architecturally stunning particularly their restaurants. Go for a drink in the afternoon supremely made by a skilled bartender or dinner and you'll be rewarded with a direct view of the sunset. Breakfast however was our favorite. Located on a stone veranda with sea views, a piano player, and incredible buffet including a full frame of honeycomb. The rooms have similar views of the sea. We were upgraded to a gorgeous suite with two balconies that was difficult to leave. Good news is you don't have to. Watch the sunset from the balcony, order room service, and have a private dinner with a view. There are random works of art that the hotel has accumulated over decades, possibly longer considering it was built in 1820. Everywhere you go, there's some sort of art piece which makes the hotel fell like staying in a museum. There's the requisite beach club and other amenities, however, the staff is what I remember most. Not only did they upgrade us and walk us through the features of our room, but they researched and presented several options for a private boat tour of the Amalfi coast. They booked it, gave us directions on meeting the boat, and followed up on our experience afterwards. They really cared that we enjoyed ourselves. From the front desk, concierge, porters, restaurant hostess, waiter, etc..the staff was attentive and accommodating. We had relatives join us for breakfast after we already sat down and they put together a larger table and made our relatives feel like guests. That service permeated the hotel and a big reason we would go back. The Bellevue Syrene is a historical hotel with a story, beautiful common areas, overflowing with Italian art, run by a fantastic staff that is only a few blocks from the center of town. The only drawback is it's difficult to leave!"

"Hotel Bellevue Syrene is a stunning, clean, and perfectly serene property. The views of the water and garden in front of the hotel are spectacular, the staff is super friendly. A special, heartfelt thank you goes to Rosa! She is a very sweet young lady who went completely above and beyond for my daughter and I! Rosa arranged a wonderful room upgrade for us and was incredibly generous in helping us celebrate my daughter's birthday. Everything about this hotel is great, but Rosa’s exceptional hospitality truly stole our hearts. We cannot wait to return!"
