The Grand Hotel Duchi d'Aosta inhabits a building whose ornate stone facade, pilastered bays, and roofline sculpture reflect the city's former status as the Austrian Empire's primary seaport, a cosmopolitan entrepôt that drew Stendhal, James Joyce, and Italo Svevo to its cafes.
