PB hotel design editorial

Two distinct structures collide in the exterior of Borgo Pignano — a medieval fortified tower with Guelph merlons and Gothic biforate windows in rough pietra serena, pressing hard against a later Renaissance villa in warm ochre render, its shuttered windows and terracotta-tiled roofline carrying the proportions of early Cinquecento Tuscan domestic architecture. The tension between them is the estate's whole story: centuries of accumulation on a hilltop above Volterra, converted into a thirty-room retreat set within five hundred acres of organic farmland, gardens, and woodland that the property cultivates as working agricultural land rather than decorative backdrop. Inside, the approach is one of careful restraint — frescoed cornices in soft blue and cream survive intact in the bedrooms, their delicate floral borders left unrestored to preserve the patina of age rather than simulate freshness. Terracotta floors, walnut cassettone chests, iron canopy beds draped in unlined white linen, and checked armchairs in muted wool give the rooms the settled atmosphere of a family house that has been quietly edited rather than designed from scratch. The restaurant, housed in a barrel-vaulted room with climbing-vine frescoes extending across the ceiling plaster, brings Mario Cipriani saddle-leather chairs to tables set beneath a brass chandelier, a large arched window framing the garden beyond. The pool is cut into the ancient stone retaining walls below the villa, its terrace opening directly onto a panorama of the Val di Cecina rolling south toward the coast.

"My family of 4 (husband, myself, and 2 teenage sons, 13 & 16) enjoyed a magical 3 nights at Borogo Pignano in the Artist’s House Villa. It was a Tuscan dream. Upon arrival from Rome, we were welcomed by the staff in the courtyard for check-in. After welcome cappuccinos (or any drink you wanted), they drove us to The Artist’s house. The Villa had 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a lovely country kitchen with anything you could need (even a truffle shaver), and a comfortable living room. The Villa has a private pool, and you get a personal golf cart to drive around. Walking into the art house instantly transported us, with the smell of their home fragrance, to the art on the walls; our senses were calmed. The amenities blew us away, from water and bookmarks on every nightstand to complementary wines made on the property to even an Italian coffee maker on the induction cooktop. We booked the Truffle-hunting experience, and it exceeded expectations after finding 14 black truffles. We were gifted 4 of them and told to bring them with us to meals so they could be shaved on top, especially our breakfast eggs. Before dinner, our first night, my husband and I enjoyed a relaxing swim while our boys made use of the recreation facilities (tennis and basketball courts) We ate at both on-site restaurants, which we reviewed separately. Both excellent. We took advantage of their shuttle service to both San Gimignano and Volterra, which was an excellent way to explore those towns. Unfortunately, we had rain during our stay, but even in non-ideal weather, Borgo Pigano is spectacular. We took the pasta-making class, learned new techniques, and enjoyed a delicious lunch for our hard work. To end our final day before dinner, we enjoyed a tour of the property with Gigi in the spring rain! He took us all over, explaining the history and unique place Borgo Pigano is. Gigi encouraged my husband and I to make a trip to the spa, where we could enjoy the steam and saunas after our wet tour, while our boys went and relaxed at the villa. Every staff member was warmly welcoming and enthusiastic to be part of the Borgo Pigano family. Upon check out, we sent off with such love that I almost cried. If you are looking for a Tuscan experience that restores your soul, Borgo Pigano is the place."

"We stayed at this beautiful resort in Tuscany, conveniently located near San Gimignano and Volterra, and it was truly top notch in every way. From the moment we arrived and were greeted with a drink, we felt completely taken care of. The setting was incredibly serene, surrounded by classic Tuscan scenery, and every detail across the property felt thoughtfully considered. Everything was impeccably maintained, creating such a relaxing and elevated atmosphere. What really made the experience stand out was the staff, who consistently went above and beyond to make our stay special. It was the kind of place where everything felt effortless and taken care of. We left already talking about when we can come back. It was such a special place."
