PB hotel design editorial

Two distinct structures collide in the exterior of Borgo Pignano — a medieval fortified tower with Guelph merlons and Gothic biforate windows in rough pietra serena, pressing hard against a later Renaissance villa in warm ochre render, its shuttered windows and terracotta-tiled roofline carrying the proportions of early Cinquecento Tuscan domestic architecture. The tension between them is the estate's whole story: centuries of accumulation on a hilltop above Volterra, converted into a thirty-room retreat set within five hundred acres of organic farmland, gardens, and woodland that the property cultivates as working agricultural land rather than decorative backdrop. Inside, the approach is one of careful restraint — frescoed cornices in soft blue and cream survive intact in the bedrooms, their delicate floral borders left unrestored to preserve the patina of age rather than simulate freshness. Terracotta floors, walnut cassettone chests, iron canopy beds draped in unlined white linen, and checked armchairs in muted wool give the rooms the settled atmosphere of a family house that has been quietly edited rather than designed from scratch. The restaurant, housed in a barrel-vaulted room with climbing-vine frescoes extending across the ceiling plaster, brings Mario Cipriani saddle-leather chairs to tables set beneath a brass chandelier, a large arched window framing the garden beyond. The pool is cut into the ancient stone retaining walls below the villa, its terrace opening directly onto a panorama of the Val di Cecina rolling south toward the coast.

Borgo Pignano Reviews

"We chose Borgo Pignano for our fifth anniversary because of the glowing reviews. I’m genuinely sad to write this, but our experience was so far from what I had read online that I felt I needed to share it. I’ve never written a review before, but I wish someone had mentioned what we encountered. It could have saved us the disappointment. The main reason for the low rating is the spa, which was shockingly filthy. The steam room and shower had large patches of thick, dark mold. In the shower, it was right next to the soap, so it was very visible — how could the cleaners not have seen this for so long? I showed the staff the photos of the mold which I attached here, and we raised the issue of the cleanliness three times. After the third time, the hotel manager came personally to apologise and kindly offered us a free drink. She was genuinely apologetic, but a free drink didn’t make up for coming so far for our anniversary only to be disappointed. We ended up canceling our massages that we were looking forward to, because we didn’t want to go back in the spa. We tried to enjoy the rest of the stay. We enjoyed the activities — truffle hunting, horseback riding, going into Volterra — and all the staff were very kind. Special thanks to Gigi, Axel, Cindy, Claudia, Krizia, Marcel, and others. The view from the pool was beautiful. The hotel itself is stunning. But overall, the experience felt rough around the edges. Nothing was seamless, there was friction in trying to do even simple things. Nothing is smooth. We’d book activities and receive confirmation, only to be told later they were double-booked. I once asked for the yoga room, walked to it in the rain, and arrived to see a meeting happening in the yoga room. I went back to the front desk and they said they’d forgotten the hotel was having a meeting there. Small issues like that added up, and it just didn’t feel like a polished, five-star experience. Again, I really hate writing a review that isn’t positive, especially when the staff really was lovely. The hotel is a gem that with some polish can be extraordinary. But right now, it isn’t what it’s marketed as, and I wish I had known that before booking such a special trip I hope this review can be taken as constructive feedback by the hotel."

"My wife and I held our wedding at Borgo Pignano in Oct, 2025 and we couldn't have been happier. We'll hold onto the memories of the weekend and can't wait to come back to Borgo Pignano over the years ahead. Planning Our wedding planner helped us, an American couple, find Borgo Pignano as a potenial venue. The main criteria we were shooting for: accommodation for up to 120 people on-site, ability to hold multiple events (our wedding was an Indian-Western mashup with multiple ceremonies), a location not too far from major airports (BP is ~1 hour south of Florence). BP met all these criteria, but what really sealed the deal was visiting in November 2024. They were closed for the season but offered to show up the property. We expected a short tour of the facilities, but instead got a 2 hour overview of the property where we were shown the different room types and many of our questions were answered. We felt very comfortable putting our deposit down at this point. We visited again in June, 2024 to see the property when it was open and do a tasting. This visit was spectacular; the property was gorgeous in the summer, the tasting that Chef Stefano executed was incredible, and we felt really confident about our choice. Staff Staff at BP are very warm, friendly, and helpful without being overbearing. They did a hero's job getting all guests checked in, and multiple guests commented at how amazing the staff was. Everyone at the front-desk was really helpful, and the breakfast crew was also amazing. Special shout out to Vittorio who was SO HELPFUL with all of our guests and us. Very special thank you to Dino, who was our impeccable head food service staff and made every event feel special and warm. He even helped entertain some kids at dinner, creating a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. JG (Gigi) the bartender was outstanding as well and made our guests feel at home. Chef Stefano did an outstanding job as well with the food, and it was great knowing most of the ingredients were grown on site. Management Giuliana, Bernadetta, and Gigi helped make the whole process go smoothly and were incredibly welcoming. They were personal and we felt right at home working with them through the whole process. The manager on the property (John I think) was also really helpful, including directly helping many of our guests out throughout the weekend. Property BP has multiple stunning locations to host ceremonies and events. We did our welcome party in the big green lawn next to the pool, our Indian ceremony in the main courtyard, our western ceremony in the forest location, and our dance party in the inner courtyard. All of these locations are gorgeous on their own and need little dressing up to feel magical. The best part was that all guests could walk to each event easily. Our guests absolutely loved the pools, both in the main area, and also the pools each villa has. All of our guests commented on how beautiful the property and rooms were, everyone felt at home while also knowing they were in a special place. BP mixes old-world charm with modern facilities and fun art. There are no TVs in rooms which honestly was a huge plus for the wedding weekend, it made it feel like you're in a classic Borgo vs. a hyper-modern hotel. In short, if you are thinking of having your wedding at BP, or staying there and enjoying the Tuscany countryside, we would highly, highly recommend it. It's a really special place."

"Borgo Pignano was absolutely fantastic. The staff was warm and friendly, remembering the way we like our coffee and eggs every morning before we ordered. Gigi, the guest manager, gave us a tour of the property and treated us like family. (Best part of the property tour are the horses, pigs, chickens and bunnies!) The hotel grows its own vegetables on the property and you can taste the fresh ingredients in all the dishes. The two restaurants are both excellent and every meal we had was better than the last. We took a cooking class with Chef Angeloantonio who taught us to make 2 different kinds of pasta and was joking around with us the whole time. There are beautiful hikes on the property and the spa was great- my husband said it was the best massage he ever had. The hotel is perfectly located to visit Volterra and San Gimignano for day trips. Before dinner every night we had drinks near the fire in the lounge and chatted with other guests- do not miss out on the 2 different kinds of homemade gin. We will absolutely come back to the hotel, next time with our kids."

"We had an absolutely amazing time at this very special and unique hotel. The location is stunning, the infinity pool is just amazing (there are two pools at the hotel) and perfect for sipping delish cocktails during the afternoon and the restaurants are fabulous too, we especially loved the fine dining restaurant. We had a beautiful suite (Sala Musica) which was huge with a piano, a fireplace and a bathroom with murals, with a stunning view of the grounds of the hotel and the Tuscan countryside with the sun setting right in front of us. But what gives this hotel the edge and makes it truly unique are the staff and we have to especially mention The One and Only Gigi, who looks after guest experiences and we can certainly vouch for the fact that he does an amazing job in this respect! He is a truly special person (we found ourselves always gravitating towards the reception area just so we could say hello and give him a hug!) and he ensured our stay went to the next level. He has an amazing knowledge of Borgo Pignano and even knew it as a private house many years back. He took us for a wonderful tour around the estate - the highlights were eating the most delicious freshly picked tomatoes and basil from the vegetable gardens, and seeing the beautiful horses! We also thoroughly recommend you try the inventive cocktails made by the lovely barman GianLuigi, I am a real cocktail aficionado so I am super fussy and I loved every single one of his cocktails and we sampled quite a few! A big thank you also to Vittorio who welcomed us so warmly. Recommend that you also buy some of the incredible products they make with the herbs they grow and their own produce - we took back to the UK their honey, lavender oil, facials spritzes, and scent diffusers. We loved every minute of our stay and we will definitely be back again soon - Gigi, we miss you!"
