PB hotel design editorial

Two distinct structures collide in the exterior of Borgo Pignano — a medieval fortified tower with Guelph merlons and Gothic biforate windows in rough pietra serena, pressing hard against a later Renaissance villa in warm ochre render, its shuttered windows and terracotta-tiled roofline carrying the proportions of early Cinquecento Tuscan domestic architecture. The tension between them is the estate's whole story: centuries of accumulation on a hilltop above Volterra, converted into a thirty-room retreat set within five hundred acres of organic farmland, gardens, and woodland that the property cultivates as working agricultural land rather than decorative backdrop. Inside, the approach is one of careful restraint — frescoed cornices in soft blue and cream survive intact in the bedrooms, their delicate floral borders left unrestored to preserve the patina of age rather than simulate freshness. Terracotta floors, walnut cassettone chests, iron canopy beds draped in unlined white linen, and checked armchairs in muted wool give the rooms the settled atmosphere of a family house that has been quietly edited rather than designed from scratch. The restaurant, housed in a barrel-vaulted room with climbing-vine frescoes extending across the ceiling plaster, brings Mario Cipriani saddle-leather chairs to tables set beneath a brass chandelier, a large arched window framing the garden beyond. The pool is cut into the ancient stone retaining walls below the villa, its terrace opening directly onto a panorama of the Val di Cecina rolling south toward the coast.

"Tranquil, the perfect countryside vacation ! Everyone was so welcoming and gracious from the moment we arrived. We almost felt like family coming into stay for a few days. The staff is incredible, the grounds impeccable and the location is perfect! We have travelled all of Italy this month and this by far rates as one of our most favorite places! Plan to stay several nights if possible, you won’t regret it! Make certain you enjoy the pool and take a tour of the grounds! Breakfast was awesome. Villas amazing!"

"Borgo Pignano is one of those places that is genuinely difficult to put into words. My husband and I visited once before falling so completely in love with it that we decided almost immediately to host our wedding there. We returned a second time ahead of the wedding, and then spent a full week on property during the wedding itself — and across every single visit, the experience was consistent in the best possible way. The property itself is extraordinary. Expansive and impeccably maintained, it offers an almost overwhelming array of things to do and see — pools, a spa, horseback riding, an apiary, basketball courts, biking, walking trails, and some of the most stunning landscaping we have ever encountered. Whether you want total relaxation or to stay busy the entire time, Borgo Pignano accommodates both effortlessly. As a foodie, the food was one of the biggest reasons I was drawn to Borgo Pignano in the first place — and it never disappoints. The restaurant holds a green Michelin Star, and you feel that commitment to excellence in every bite. What makes it even more special is that nearly everything on your plate is grown or produced right on the property itself — vegetables, salami, and so much more. It is farm-to-table in the truest sense of the word. During our wedding weekend, with nearly 100 guests over four days, the kitchen did not miss a single beat. Our guests were raving about the food all weekend long, which is truly the highest compliment I can give. But what elevates Borgo Pignano above any other property we have visited is the staff. They are warm, attentive, and remarkably responsive — and that has been true on every visit, whether we were a couple quietly exploring the property or at the center of a large, complex event. Our wedding required constant coordination between the property team and our external planning team, all while managing the needs of ~100 guests over four days, including two days of exclusive buyout. Despite all of that moving complexity, and even with intermittent rain requiring last-minute adjustments, the staff handled everything with calm professionalism and grace. We also brought our miniature dachshund to the wedding, and the team could not have been more welcoming or accommodating toward her. A small but equally telling example of their hospitality: at our welcome dinner pasta station, a guest mentioned he was gluten free. Staff not only made him a fresh portion on the spot, they then found him in the crowd to personally deliver it. That level of care is not reserved for special occasions — it is simply how Borgo Pignano operates. We are already looking for any excuse to return. Borgo Pignano is simply unlike anywhere else."

"We went there for a wedding. We stayed at Villa Poggio - it was just magnificent with beautiful views of rolling hills. The village itself is rustic, but modern in everything else - the shower is one of the best I have experienced in Europe. Gigi, the customer relationships manager made our stay extra special- he is full of stories and history as he drove us to the neighboring old city of Gimignano I will like to bring my family, including the grand kids back. It is worth penny."

"We were looking for rustic luxury set amidst tranquil nature with splendid views. We were hoping for excellent service and tasty food. From our arrival, when Gigi welcomed us in classic gentlemanly style and warmth - glass of Borgo Pignano fizz (it is delicious!) proffered - we felt our expectations exceeded. Fabrizio who attended us at dinner was the consummate serving professional - hugely knowledgeable, attentive, authentic and quick to laugh. We also wish a shout out to Ariana (who, on discovering my preferred blend of mint tea at dinner, unbidden ensured that I would have it at breakfast too) and Patrick who arranged for me to have a light lunch relaxing by the pool and ensured that we had bottles of water after we awoke from dozing. Besides being our guide on the Land Tour, Gigi would check in with us throughout our stay - warm, welcoming and discreet. Our time in the spa was very relaxing and our daily walks around the property (hunt out the waterfall!) were refreshing and idyllic. We loved the focus on organic, local produce - but most of all we loved that we felt welcomed as we would to the beautiful home of friends who know how to host. Thank you to you all."
