PB hotel design editorial

Strung across a hillside in the Val d'Orcia near Chiusdino, a thirteenth-century hamlet of stone farmhouses, olive groves, and cypress-lined drives was quietly transformed into one of Tuscany's most romantic retreats by Jeanette and Claus Thottrup, who acquired the estate in 2005 and spent years restoring it by hand. Borgo Santo Pietro now spreads across some fifty hectares of working land — vineyards, kitchen gardens, beehives — with the main villa, a neoclassical palazzetto built around 1800, anchoring a constellation of converted agricultural buildings whose terracotta-tiled roofs are visible from above as warm interruptions in the surrounding green. The interiors carry the feeling of a privately assembled Italian country house rather than a designed hotel, each room furnished differently with antique four-poster beds in carved walnut, crystal chandeliers suspended from exposed timber trusses, gilded Baroque headboards set against hand-painted botanical murals, and aged stone fireplaces framed by lace curtains in cream and ivory. Distressed plaster walls finished in chalky Tuscan tones run through the suites, grounded by worn travertine floors and patterned rugs. The restaurant, with its wide plank floors, rusted steel-framed windows opening onto rolling countryside, and hanging ironwork chandelier, achieves a particular atmosphere — sophisticated without formality. Outside, a curved natural stone pool terrace edged in terracotta amphorae and flowering Mediterranean planting completes the picture of an estate that has always looked exactly like this, even though it hasn't.

About

Situated in the heart of Tuscany, Borgo Santo Pietro was once a healing stopover for medieval pilgrims. Today it continues to provide a sanctuary for modern souls, merging luxury hotel o erings and spa concept with a ‘farm-to-plate’ philosophy on a 300-acre estate. The estate encompasses a Michelin-starred restaurant, a holistic spa, organic skincare range Seed to Skin and an extensive organic farm. A sumptuous feeling of home pervades the 800-year- old luxury farmhouse hotel, with its worn leather armchairs pulled up around open fires, fresh flower arrangements picked straight from the garden and weathered brick wine cellar lined with boutique labels. Each of the boutique hotel’s 22 suites & rooms conveys its signature luxury experience of exquisite furnishings and chandeliers, antique art, bespoke beds, well- appointed bathrooms and a propinquity with nature. Whether the choice be a classic suite in the main 12th century villa, an exclusive suite with garden, or a seclusive villa with pool, the ethereal experience is designed for 5 star gratification and service.

Borgo Santo Pietro Reviews

"Our stay at Borgo Santo Pietro was pure magic. From the moment we arrived, the calm beauty of Tuscany surrounded us. We were upgraded from the Rosmarino Garden Suite to the Casa dei Fiori Bianchi Pool Suite (Casa de Fara)—a secluded haven with a private pool and lavender-scented towels, robes, and bedding that made every detail feel luxurious. Before we even checked in, I mentioned needing a specific mouthwash. The staff found it and had it delivered that same evening—a small act of care that perfectly captures Borgo’s spirit. We took the estate’s bicycles, freely scattered around for guests to use, and explored the gardens filled with lavender, rosemary, and lemon balm. Along the way we saw alpacas, chickens, and rabbits, whose fresh eggs appear at breakfast each morning. Nearly everything served here is grown or produced on-site. Dinner both nights at Trattoria sull’Albero, the “Treehouse,” was unforgettable—soft lantern light, the scent of wood smoke, and soulful Tuscan cuisine at its finest. Borgo Santo Pietro isn’t just a hotel—it’s a living expression of Tuscan grace and sustainability. Every person there radiates warmth and pride. We left restored and already dreaming of our return."

"Words cannot express how perfect our stay was at Borgo. We spent four days here to celebrate our engagement and stayed in the Vecchio Forno suite. If we were to return we would be insistent on getting the same room -- we felt so lucky to have stayed in such a historic suite! The suite was massive, with tall ceilings, two bathroom sections, a sitting area, and a gorgeous private patio space. This particular villa we found to be mid-tier in terms of pricing yet separate from the main house. The location of the suite was incredibly central. We had the bike station next to us, the great lawns, pool, and restaurants just a few steps away. The service, from the moment we arrived, was top notch. Staff went above and beyond to meet any small request and we were astounded by the ways we did not see one bill the entire time. Everything was incredibly discreet. My partner and I both got the jet-lag treatment at the spa and we can each confidently say that it was the best massages we've ever received. We also had some of the best Negronis of our lives at the patio bar. We opted to eat at Trattoria for all lunches and dinners and the menu always gave us new and exciting options (we found it was not worth the extra money to eat at the Michelin restaurant, which we found to be very formal). Each day we biked down to the stunning river for a swim (the bike ride, while easy to navigate, is directly in the sun -- recommended to bring lots and lots of water!!) and each day we tried to discover a new part of the sprawling property. We cannot wait to return to celebrate our next milestone. Thank you infinitely Borgo!!!"

"This hotel is not honest about money. This hotel owes me money since over a year, a small sum, only about Euros 300 and has been stringing me along saying they will send, they have sent it, but I've never received it. The only thing I can think is that they have financial problems otherwise what hotel in their right mind would sacrifice their reputation for so small an amount."

"Add me to the list of people still waiting for a refund... Had to change plans and cancelled my reservation in May of 2025. Although Amex stated that they would refund within 45 days, hotel emailed and said 60 days. After 60 days I contacted them and asked for my refund immediately. No response. I had planned to stay here on one of our next trips to Italy, but obviously that is not going to happen. Beware."
