PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a hilltop in the Maremma, that wilder, less-visited corner of Tuscany where the landscape rolls toward the Tyrrhenian coast in waves of oak forest and vineyard, a medieval castle that had stood largely untouched for centuries became, under the stewardship of Carlo and Aurora Baccheschi Berti, one of Italy's most quietly compelling small hotels. Castello di Vicarello was not converted so much as tenderly inhabited — the couple spent years restoring the twelfth-century structure by hand, sourcing antiques, salvaged stone floors, and worn kilims rather than commissioning a design studio to impose a coherent vision from outside. The results are visible in every corner: rough-hewn pietra serena walls left exposed in the ground-floor rooms, Moroccan Beni Ourain rugs laid over ancient terracotta, four-poster beds with painted wood frames set against unplastered stone, leather wing chairs clustered around ceramic-based lamps with raffia shades. Upstairs, where the walls are lime-washed to a pale blue-white, parquet flooring in a small-block chevron pattern and carved walnut window surrounds carry a more refined register, plaster busts and framed topographical prints arranged with the ease of a well-loved private house. The infinity pool, lined in deep green marble with a geometric basketweave pattern, draws the eye across a valley of olive groves toward Monte Amiata. Eight suites in total mean the scale never tips into the institutional — the castello functions, at all times, like a home that happens to welcome guests.

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our 40th Wedding Anniversary Our stay at Castello di Vicarello was absolutely magical — the perfect way to end our 40th wedding anniversary trip through Italy. From the moment we arrived, we were surrounded by warmth, kindness, and genuine hospitality that made us feel like family. Every member of the team went above and beyond: Lisa, Licia, Edoardo, Soledad, Giuseppe, and Stefano — each made our stay unforgettable. We also thank Benjamin, Jalal, Sheik, Isabel, and Nico — your smiles, attentiveness, and care truly captured the heart of Vicarello. On October 13th, our actual anniversary day, we felt on cloud nine: breakfast on our terrace, a peaceful afternoon by the pool, relaxing massages, lunch overlooking the vineyards, and a romantic dinner for three that touched our hearts. If we could change anything, it would only be to spend one day less in Rome and one more here. Castello di Vicarello is more than a place to stay — it’s an experience of peace, connection, and unforgettable memories. Donald & Lisa Shauger — New Jersey, USA"

"It really pains me to write this review as this should have been one of those "once in a lifetime" trips... but unfortunately this place fell short. It is an absolutely beautiful setting and the rooms are gorgeous and well furnished. The service, however, from their guest relations was subpar. Victor seemed very frazzled and almost annoyed any time we would ask a question or if we had to order something to the room or the pool. There was a misunderstanding with a reservation we had and he was almost combative with my mother and I as opposed to understanding and accommodating. The one day we spent at the pool we asked for a jug of water since it was 97 degrees Fahrenheit and it took nearly an hour and 45 minutes for them to deliver water... FYI, no one checks on you at the pool or comes by to see if you need a drink, etc... you have to send a Whatsapp message... wait an insanely long time for them to show up with your order and they charge you 25 Euros for the "delivery fee". As we waited for the water, we decided to order drinks as well since it was now the afternoon. That took an additional 45 minutes to arrive. After the painfully long wait and the audacity to still charge us for that "delivery", we found Victor and told him about the slow service and alerted him that half the chairs at the pool were broken (you have to lay flat the whole time, the incline wasn't working) and he literally was just trying to walk away from me as I was speaking. Also, I found it a little off-putting that not one manager asked us the entire time we were staying there "How are you enjoying your stay? Is everything alright? Is there anything I can do for you?" Don't get me wrong, they smile at you and say good morning but that's it. We went to Venice after and it was nice to have the concierge check in on us on occasion and actually feel like a welcomed guest as opposed to a burden... We stayed in the "Suite Torre" and while it was very nicely decorated, it was unbearably hot at night to the point where you cannot sleep comfortably at all. It is a generously sized room with high ceilings but with that being said there are only two small A/C units on opposite sides of the room which are not nearly adequate enough for the space. I would avoid staying in the peak of summer unless you don't mind sleeping in the heat. My parents stayed in the "Villa Chiesina" which was also nice but they had the same problem with the rooms being very hot at night. The food was good and the waitstaff are very kind. At many of the dinners though it seemed they were really understaffed and stressed. The prices for the wines are over the top which you would expect as you are in the middle of nowhere. But taking that into account, they do not even have a sommelier at dinnertime to answer any questions or talk to you about the wine. I found that odd especially being in Italian wine country. Special shoutout to the bartender though who was great! Overall, the setting and food are great but there are so many beautiful places in Tuscany to stay (that would actually appreciate your business) that I would look elsewhere than Castello di Vicarello."

"Slow mornings and cooking classes at the best spot in Italy. We absolutely loved the golden light, the endless view and the set up of a private dinner for two. Castello di Vicarello is an oasis in the heart of wild Tuscany."
