PB hotel design editorial

Across a hilltop in the Chianti Classico between Florence and Siena, a twelfth-century castle and its constellation of farm buildings have been drawn into one of Tuscany's most carefully calibrated conversions. COMO Castello Del Nero — forty-one rooms and suites distributed across the original medieval structures — holds to the ridge with the self-assurance of a building that has already survived eight centuries of Tuscan weather and political upheaval, and sees no reason to announce itself differently now. The interiors manage a particular tension with considerable skill: ancient fabric kept visibly intact, contemporary comfort slipped in without apology. Barrel-vaulted stone cellars, their rough-hewn walls and herringbone terracotta floors left entirely undisturbed, are furnished with cobalt and grey velvet chairs and an oversized convex mirror that presses the medieval space into a conversation with something more knowing. Guest rooms sit beneath whitewashed timber beam ceilings or Tuscan plaster vaults, terracotta tile running continuously underfoot, while the furniture — upholstered benches, textured headboards in silvered grey linen, slim iron curtain rods — introduces a deliberately cool, almost Milanese restraint against the warmth of the building. Outside, a long lap pool is edged with clipped hedging and terracotta urns, the Chianti hills opening beyond in every direction, cypress punctuating the view precisely where they always have.

"The location is amazing. The grapes and all of the hike paths you can see are all beautiful. There is one small pool, if you bring a family there could be some people trying to relax but it is okay. The rooms are pretty average for a hotel this expensive and beautiful. I would pay a lot more to stay here it is amazing."

"This resort will transport you into another world. It is absolutely stunning at this time of the year. You could sit for hours, just staring out at the landscape. The staff truly go out of their way to accommodate any request and or friendly and helpful."

"Hotel is placed in restored medical monastery. Rooms are well appointed but underdeveloped with some minimal details and furniture. Restaurant serve good but not exceptional food. We came with a group and our stay was prearranged and paid through the agency. I was surprised to learn that one night stay was more than 1000 euros. It was more than twice more than what we paid in previous hotel in Tuscany that was better in every way. Most shockingly they charged tips of 40% on a cocktail that my wife had during closing reception. Overpriced and average experience at best."

"Quite a weird experience. The promised view of valleys was non-existent - it was just a very close view of a big tree. Had expected more in the way of activity than sit in the sun or drink wine. Service was very patchy - some of the staff were great, others downright rude."

"We stayed at Como Castelo Del Nero in June for our babymoon, and it truly exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely looked after. The doorman greeted us with a warm smile and took care of our luggage, while the lovely reception team made check-in feel effortless and welcoming. Right after check-in, Giulia gave us a warm tour of the property and walked us to our room—which was absolutely stunning. Spacious, elegant, and with views that immediately made us feel relaxed and spoiled. Later in the day, we met Fabio, the hotel manager—gracious, attentive, and clearly passionate about creating a memorable guest experience. The hotel is set in the most peaceful and breathtaking surroundings—rolling hills, vineyards, and a calm that’s hard to put into words. We spent hours on the terrace, soaking in the view over delicious lunches and romantic dinners. Every dish was wonderful, but a special thank you goes to Chef Giovanni—I’m still thinking about those ricotta pancakes at breakfast! The pool was perfect for a gentle dip and some quiet sun time, and the housekeeping staff were incredible—our room was always spotless, fresh, and beautifully maintained. This trip gave us exactly what we needed: time to unwind, reconnect, and enjoy some stillness before becoming parents. We left feeling rested, happy, and full of gratitude. We couldn’t recommend Como Castelo Del Nero more—it’s not just a beautiful hotel, it’s an experience."
