PB hotel design editorial

A medieval fortress rising from the wooded hills of Umbria's Niccone Valley, its rubble-stone walls and watchtower intact after nearly a thousand years, became the unlikely canvas for one of Italy's most quietly obsessive restoration projects. Hotel Castello di Reschio took shape over two decades under the direction of Count Benedikt Bolza, who trained as an architect and treated the eleventh-century castello not as a ruin to be sanitized but as a living document to be read carefully and extended with equal care. The aerial images reveal the full complexity of the compound — terracotta rooflines stepping down the hillside, a medieval tower crowned with a contemporary glass pavilion, cypresses and umbrella pines threading between the structures in arrangements that feel entirely uncontrived. Inside, the thirty-six rooms carry the atmosphere of a cultured private house assembled across generations rather than conceived in a single decorating pass. Exposed chestnut beams, antique terracotta floors, and lime-plastered walls in warm grey and ochre provide the architectural ground; against these, the furnishings layer iron four-poster beds lacquered in deep red, cast-iron clawfoot baths positioned beside arched alcoves, and an eclectic mix of vintage Italian mid-century chairs alongside worn leather club seating. The outdoor pool — a perfect dark ellipse set into a lawn framed by stone pines — mirrors the castello at dusk with the stillness of a Flemish painting. The terrace restaurant extends the same logic outward, copper-shaded table lamps and green rattan chairs arranged against ancient parapet walls, the folded Umbrian hills dissolving into late light beyond.

"Travel agent review. Reschio sits between Umbria and Tuscany, and the past two days have felt like I’ve been in a medieval fairytale. I stayed in this restored castle dating back to 1050, surrounded by elegance, warmth, and exquisite detail. I woke after one of the best sleeps of my life to a mist covered landscape, then took a crisp morning walk among deer, birds, and horses from the equestrian center. After a divine breakfast served by the happiest staff, I had an unforgettable massage that began with a candlelit Roman bath beneath the courtyard. I floated under stone arches in the restored well to the sound of cascading water, it like a dream. Later, I savored botanical gin with organic snacks from the in room minibar while a pianist played The Phantom Melody by Ketelby in the Palm courtyard. As I ended the evening by the crackling fire, I was left humbled and moved, Reschio is truly a place beyond words."

"I couldn’t remove my last review about scorpions, but I wanted to let everyone know that hotel provided full refund of my stay and apology for my experience. I had to leave early because of my horrible phobia, but the team was amazing ! Grateful and thankful for support. Best of wishes to the hotel and hope they can sort out their little guests problem .."

"This place was off the scale amazing. It has ruined all future holidays for me because nothing else will ever compare. Absolutely everything was perfection. The room was incredible with loads of complimentary drinks, food etc. The equestrian facilities were so amazing I think I actually cried with joy, and cantering through the Tuscan countryside was a dream come true. The food was absolutely top drawer and the service from all staff was seamless and perfect. The pool is much larger than it seems from photos and heated to the perfect temperature. I had the best facial of my life. Despite being obviously very expensive they actually made it seem good value and now I will spend the rest of my life endeavouring to go back at every opportunity!"

"Reschio is an incredible property with and an exceptional staff. From the moment we arrived, every detail was flawless. Our room was much larger than we were expecting with a gorgeous view of the pool and thoughtful details like fresh flowers from the grounds, charming photos of the couple who owns the property, and a complimentary bar with things like fresh squeezed juices and Reschio gin. Every morning we hiked around the property on lovely trails surrounded by wild flowers and epic views that stretched unobstructed for miles and miles. At night we listed to live piano music in the bar and then chose between two fabulous restaurants that had some of the best food we have had in a very long time, full of garden vegetables and fruit from the property. We recently ate at one of the top five restaurants in the world and we were happier with the food at Reschio. It was that caliber. The staff was also excellent. They had a way of anticipating every need or desire before we expressed it and seemed to read each guest well enough to know which ones wanted to talk and which ones wanted total privacy and silence. We also took a wonderful pottery class that was very worth the cost. Our instructor was amazing. Our only regret about staying at Reschio was that we didn't book more of the classes and experiences! For the price, Reschio could be so much less. Instead, they care about style, creativity, originality, excellence, and quality -- which is sadly hard to find these days. Reschio is a modern treasure."

"I never write hotel reviews, but I can’t resist. I just left the hotel with my wife, and this is the worst experience in my life ever. We were invited by friends for a birthday celebration and came with our small, cute teacup (1.5kg) poodle dog. Several rooms were booked for two nights. Their website does not state a no-pets policy anywhere, but the nightmare just started. It turns out they just hate dogs. Maybe I will write a full story later, but to give you an idea: there was a moment when heavy rain started. They did not allow our small dog to get under cover (the “explanation” was that their guests may have allergies). Fortunately, we found cover near the pool…"
