PB hotel design editorial

Perched above the Val d'Orcia on a hillside outside Castiglioncello del Trinoro, a medieval hamlet that had stood largely abandoned for decades became, under the direction of American collector and cultural entrepreneur Michael Cioffi, one of the more quietly influential small hotels in Tuscany. Monteverdi Tuscany opened in 2013 after a painstaking restoration of the village's stone farmhouses and agricultural buildings, with New York-based designer Ilaria Miani guiding the interiors toward something closer to an inhabited village than a conventional hotel. The 18 rooms and suites distributed across multiple structures draw their character directly from the bones of the buildings: original chestnut ceiling beams left exposed overhead, rough-hewn stone walls sealed rather than plastered over, and antique terracotta and wide-plank oak floors preserved wherever possible. What distinguishes Miani's approach is the deliberate tension between the ancient and the frankly contemporary. One room deploys a bed frame mounted on industrial castors beneath those age-darkened beams, paired with woven armchairs in grey wool and terracotta-red poured resin floors; another settles deeper into the vernacular, with linen the colour of pale wheat, jute kilim runners, and a blackened steel fireplace as the room's sole modern note. The dining room cuts into the living rock face of the hillside, its rough stone wall left entirely bare. Outside, a flagstone terrace furnished with Jorge Ferrari-Hardoy butterfly chairs surveys the Val d'Orcia rolling south toward Monte Amiata — the view as elemental as anything inside.

About

Monteverdi Tuscany is a luxury hilltop hotel surrounded by the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is centrally located 2 hours from Rome and 90 minutes from Florence. In 2023, Monteverdi unveiled new rooms and suites, a meeting and retreat center, and a new Spa & Wellness Center with a distinctive approach that blends ancient beauty rituals and time-tested luxury beauty products with modern treatments and therapies. The property has a range of culinary options: a casual dining restaurant that celebrates tradition Tuscan flavors with modern interpretations, a stunning Lounge & Terrace Bar with sweeping views of Tuscany and a Library Bar. Guests can also take part in hands-on classes and chef's table experiences at the Culinary Academy. A forthcoming fine dining concept, Oreade, opens in Spring 2025. Monteverdi also offers an art gallery with exhibitions from leading international artists and a concert series performed by renowned musicians and vocalists.

"A special shoutout to Enes, who made our afternoons and evenings unforgettable. His drinks were fantastic—whether he was mixing something familiar or introducing us to local creations, every cocktail was truly mind-blowing. His service was warm, attentive, and absolutely exceptional. We visited in November, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The changing leaves made the entire resort look like something out of a postcard. Our room was beautiful, comfortable, and the ideal place to unwind after a day of relaxing and exploring. We left feeling refreshed, cared for, and already talking about when we can come back. This resort is a gem—highly, highly recommend."

Don't be fooled by positive reviews: this hotel is the biggest prank in Tuscany. Isolated location, access by dirt road and nothing that justifies the 5-star title - with good will, does not deliver 3. I booked and paid for a super luxury suite with a view and king bed: no minibar, no air control, no wardrobe (only a clothesline with hangers), no bathtub, no coffee maker and a 27" monitor. Cheap trousseau, coarse red towels and Americanized decoration, cold and without identity - the result of an investor who transformed a millennial village into a soulless business. At check-in, I received an improvised room and combined with two more, all sharing the same living room. Only after firm refusal were we transferred to another, with two single beds joined to simulate a king. Now, amazed: the hotel is 750 m above sea level, with constant cold - and the use of the only heated pool costs 90 euros per person per time. Either you pay, or you don't enter. I have already stayed in Castello di Casole, Banfi, San Felice, Santo Pietro, Villa San Sanino and Castiglion del Bosco - all impeccable, authentic and with a Tuscan soul. Monteverdi doesn't come close. Conclusion: a monumental bluff disguised as a boutique hotel. Cold, without surrender and without soul. A waste of time, money and patience."

"Monteverdi was created from a once abandoned hill village in Tuscany. Everything about it is exceptional from the rooms, to the food, to the service, to the hospitality. The views over the stunning Val d’Orcia are incomparable. There are so many hidden lanes and secluded places to sit and relax. They can arrange excursions like the mind blowing visit to a neighboring Pecorino farm (see my just posted review of Caseificio Piu). Also worth noting is their world class (and for the quality reasonably priced) wine list. I cannot recommend this place highly enough."

"Monteverdi is a gorgeous place to spend time in Tuscany. The hotel is a renovated hilltop castle/village. The rooms are a great mix of modern convenience (including wi-fi) and Tuscan architecture (wooden beams and plaster walls) and the property has amazing views of the surrounding hills and valley. Everyone on the staff goes above and beyond to ensure a relaxing and memorable stay. I had a private tour of the Tenuta di Trenorio vineyard, a cooking class and an amazing private dinner with chef Giancarla, and Massimo was generous with his time to help ensure that I had a perfect Tuscan experience. I highly recommend Monteverdi and would return there any time!"
