PB hotel design editorial

Ringed by autumn vineyards and silver-green olive groves on a hillside above Radda in Chianti, a twelfth-century Romanesque pieve — a rural parish church with a campanile and adjoining farmstead — was converted into Pieve Aldina, one of the quieter and more considered small hotels in the Chianti Classico zone. The aerial view confirms what the landscape around Radda promises: this is agricultural Tuscany largely undisturbed, the stone complex sitting within its own walled estate as it has for centuries, cypress sentinels marking the boundary between tended garden and open countryside. The interiors navigate the conversion with genuine restraint. Bedrooms retain their original arched plasterwork and terracotta brick floors laid in a herringbone pattern, while the design intervention keeps its voice low — walls washed in sage green and warm white, linen curtains pooling at arched windows, Calder-style wire mobiles suspended from beamed ceilings in a gesture that reads as playful rather than decorative. The restaurant holds its own register: a long upholstered banquette in ribbed oatmeal linen runs the length of a high whitewashed wall hung with an informal arrangement of antique engravings, bentwood café chairs pulled up to dark-stained timber tables. Outdoors, a stone-edged pool framed by umbrella pines and mature olives completes the picture — a property whose considerable atmosphere derives almost entirely from what has been left alone rather than what has been added.

"As you pull up to the 10th century property, you realize you've just entered into another world. The stone buildings, surrounded by beautiful trees and bordered by fields and luscious vineyards, immediately reminded me this is where you go to reset. The staff, who was extremely friendly and helpful the entire time, welcomed us by giving us a tour of the entire property, to include the stunning church that still serves special events. We were then led to our spacious suite, which felt like a small apartment. It was extremely comfortable and cozy. Each morning we enjoyed the magnificent breakfast buffet. Not only were we provided with an array of fresh fruits, pastries, bread, yogurts and eggs, but the buffet also offered local prepared favorites such as a Tuscan salad, stewed tomatoes and several different breakfast quiches. And the barista at the bar was always willing to to ensure you left with enough caffeine. The pool on the property is similar to an infinity pool on the one side, which opens up to an amazing view of the rolling green hills that surround the property. There are plenty of deck chairs and umbrellas and we never had an issue finding a spot to relaxin in. A staff member would drop by every so often to take drink and food offers. Yes you are truly pampered here. We ate dinner one time on the property- it was a little fancy for our tastes but the food was delicious nonetheless. We ate outside in a beautiful courtyard and were serenaded with soft live music. The entire ambiance made it a special treat, and they offer a great selection of wines. As I stated before, the staff is willing to go above and beyond to ensure you enjoy your vacation. They helped us secure ebikes, which were delivered to the property, and allowed us to ride to the nearby village of Radda in approximately twenty minutes. The ride was well worth it, as you pass gorgeous vineyards that adorn the rolling hills, old chaplets, and beautiful winery estates. Our stay in Pieve Aldina was heavenly and gave us a chance to get away from all of the hustle and bustle for a few days and relax in one of the most beautiful regions of Italy in one of the most lovely properties in the area."

"Lovely location in Chianti and super friendly staff. Loved the decor and feel of the place. We were kindly upgraded to a junior suite but unfortunately no bath and had we paid full price this would have been disappointing. Many of the terraces are not private but there are lots of garden areas to enjoy. The pool is small but still nice to spend an afternoon by. To the lady squeezing her boyfriend’s spots by the pool- this is gross. Yes everyone saw, money doesn’t buy class it seems. The sommelier was fantastic and we enjoyed the wine tasting. Would highly recommend Volpaia nearby and Barruci for the best pasta and warmest welcome ever ! We will return !"
