PB hotel design editorial

Somewhere between Empoli and Cerreto Guidi, where the Arno valley flattens into vine rows and silver-leaved olives before the hills rise again toward San Miniato, a seventeenth-century Tuscan farmstead complex was converted into Villa Petriolo with the particular conviction that the building's agricultural bones — its lime-washed walls, terracotta floors, and barrel-vaulted cellars — deserved to survive the renovation rather than be smoothed away. From the air, the compound arrangement of the main villa and flanking cascine is immediately legible: the pale ochre render of the central building, the cypress sentinels marking the entrance court, the vineyards pressing in from three sides. The infinty pool, positioned to frame an unbroken prospect across undulating wheat fields toward a hilltop town on the horizon, makes that agricultural landscape the property's primary amenity. Inside, the interiors calibrate carefully between restoration and invention. Bedroom ceilings expose their original chestnut beams, the plasterwork left deliberately rough and mineral in tone — the grey-green marmorino finish giving walls an aged patina that no decorator could convincingly fake. Against this, the furnishings introduce a considered modernity: forged iron four-poster beds with brass finials, upholstered bench seats in dove-grey linen, freestanding roll-top baths positioned as room centerpieces rather than hidden behind doors. The restaurant, fitted into a vaulted cantina, pairs exposed Roman brick arches with copper pendant lighting and polished steel bar joinery — a combination that honors the bones of the agricultural building without pretending the twenty-first century hasn't arrived.

Villa Petriolo Reviews

"A luxury small hotel villa out in the countryside - half way between Pisa and Florence. A beautiful base from which to explore Tuscany. Attention to detail really makes the difference. Spacious, beautiful rooms. Excellent fresh breakfast with lots of choice. We ate in the restaurant on 3 nights, so managed to get through most of the options, and all were fantastic in their own way. The waiters servers were friendly and super helpful. Try the locally produced wine, honey, sheeps milk cheeses etc etc etc. Drinks whilst watching the sunset with everybody smiling and looking stress-free. We did not try the spa or fitness room. A lovely outside pool though with an infinity feel to it. Very expensive but sometimes it's just worth it."

I’m not sure why there are so few reviews—maybe the hotel is still relatively unknown? Our group of five stayed at Petriolo from April 4 to April 6, 2026. My only feedback for the hotel is that you should take better photos, because the hotel itself is far more beautiful than the pictures show! Even though we knew it was an SLH property, it still exceeded our expectations. The hotel is stunning overall, the service is on point, and the rooms are at a five-star standard—very new and well-maintained, which is not common in Italy. Breakfast was decent overall, and dinner offered plenty of choices. We had a wonderful holiday, highly recommend it, and it’s the kind of hotel we’d want to return to. Location: Quiet. It’s about a 5–10 minute drive from Fucecchio. The roads are a mix of one-way and two-way, but there’s little traffic, good road conditions, and spectacular scenery. From the hotel, driving to Pisa or Lucca takes about 40 minutes, while Florence is a bit farther at around one hour. Rooms: We stayed in one triple room and one double room. The double room was of a normal size. The triple room was actually a suite—you enter through a small foyer, and then there are two separate bedrooms on the left and right, each with its own bathroom. In one of the bedrooms, a sofa bed was set up. The rooms were clean and tidy, and the bathrooms were understatedly luxurious and very new. Hotel: The hotel grounds are quite large and well-maintained. We didn’t use the pool, but it was kept in excellent condition. It’s a heated pool, and in April, it would actually be possible to swim in the afternoon. The pool area faces a small valley. I spent a good part of the day there—it was incredibly relaxing and truly gave a holiday feel. Dining: The breakfast buffet didn’t have a huge selection, but the food was tasty. We had dinner at the hotel for two nights. Perhaps we were just a bit tired of Italian food by then, but both the service and the dishes were excellent. Activities: Due to time constraints, we only went truffle hunting, which took place at the foot of the hill. I found it to be a very unique experience—I didn’t know that truffles only grow in certain parts of Europe and are highly dependent on the weather. Climate change poses a risk to truffles, as both extreme drought and excessive humidity can affect yields. I think experiencing it once in a lifetime is a wonderful thing."

"Luxury hotel surrounded by commited organic farmers. Delicious local food. Farm Manager described the organic practices and the way the animals are lovingly handled is a marvel. The results are evident in the creative and delicious cuisine. Comfortable room and lovely, friendly staff. All in all, a delightful and highly recommended experience."
