PB hotel design editorial

Andrea Palladio completed his design for the Zitelle complex on Giudecca Island around 1561, and the white Istrian stone facade — its twin bell towers, central dome, and arched thermal window rising directly from the waterfront — stands among the most composed ecclesiastical elevations in Venice. That building, alongside Villa Frollo and the Conventino, now forms the architectural spine of Airelles Palladio, Venice, which opened in 2026 after a transformation by Christophe Tollemer, who serves as both architect and artistic director of Maisons Airelles. Tollemer's most decisive move was to halve the property's room count from ninety to forty-five keys, expanding each space until the interiors breathe with the generosity the Palladian shell demands. The rooms visible in the images layer terrazzo floors — their warm aggregate catching afternoon light from casement windows — beneath dark-stained timber beam ceilings and walls dressed in Rubelli fabric, the palette shifting between dusty sage green and amber gold depending on the wing. Fortuny chandeliers cast a diffuse glow over dining rooms where coffered arches frame views through into enfilade salons hung with Venetian vedute in gilded frames. Murano glass appears throughout, less as ornament than as evidence of an archipelago's craft lineage. Behind the buildings, a long limestone-edged pool sits within nearly a hectare of Mediterranean garden, Italian cypresses and clipped box cones reflected in still water — a composed stillness that feels entirely foreign to the Venice waiting just across the lagoon.

"We were staying just down the road at the Cipriani Hotel, but honestly, Les Airelles and ABC Kitchen stole the show. From the moment we walked in, the whole setting felt spectacularly wow—like stepping into a world where every detail had been thoughtfully considered. The interiors are nothing short of breathtaking, and the bar? Absolutely amazing. I had one of the best cocktails of my life there, and the bar team (I think the bar manager was Roberto) went above and beyond. They shared the hotel’s history, told us where they were from, and even gave us little mementos of the property. Such a kind, personal touch that made us feel truly welcomed. ABC Kitchen was another highlight. We ended up going back twice for dinner because it was just that good. The food was outstanding, but the dessert display… wow. I’ve honestly never seen anything like it before—such an incredible selection, beautifully presented. It was hard to choose! The staff throughout were so friendly and engaging, always making us feel like valued guests rather than just another table. A special mention has to go to the Greek sommelier at the restaurant (I’m sorry, I can’t remember his name). He was so knowledgeable and passionate about wine, and his experience really shone through. He made our meal so memorable, as did the rest of the waiting staff. Among all the luxury hotels I’ve stayed in, the team at Les Airelles ranks among the very best. We’ll definitely be back. After this experience, Les Airelles is next on our list—it’s such a perfect representation of the brand. What a hotel."

"What a great experience, you land with the water taxi at the pier on the Guidecca directly in front of the hotel. Just comes from St. Mark's Square with its hustle and bustle and noise, you land here and go through the entrance and end up in a wonderfully restored building complex, which to describe here would go beyond the scope. In the rear area of this complex of several buildings there is a huge, very beautiful garden, which also includes the pool. We were kindly given a guided tour by an employee through the premises, which house several restaurants. We had a reservation at the restaurant Matsuhisha Nobu, the kitchen. There it has surpassed itself in all courses. I have not eaten better in my past in other Matsuhisha Nobu restaurants. The service in all areas of the hotel was very attentive and friendly and we had the opportunity to have a coffee and a dessert after dinner in the outdoor restaurant which is located in the garden. For my wife and me this was an overwhelming experience, as if it were nowhere to be found in Venice. I think we will return here not only for food, but also for the overnight stay."

"This is a fantastic place — definitely on the pricier side, but absolutely worth it if you have something special to celebrate. Although there were hardly any other guests there, the atmosphere was still wonderful. The service is exceptionally friendly, and the Japanese restaurant is truly fantastic."

"This was my 12th visit to Venice. I have been on vacation here in all seasons, stayed at Danieli, Excelsior Lido, Europa & Regina and mostly at Cipriani. The creation of this new hotel must have been an incredible job. First of all the selection of Giudecca is brilliant. It enables space, garden, pool and quietness away from mass tourism. A 5 minutes boat crossing to St Marks puts you at center of activity quicker than walking from some hotels in town. The huge beautiful gardens make you feel in a country house and the pool adds that great feature for hot days. The hotel consists of a main former church and convent plus several other adjoining annex, all joined by garden pathways. The space of the former church still exists for any ceremonial or event purpose. Around it they arranged the lobby, bar, restaurant, etc and many rooms plus others in different annexes. The quality of materials used, the refined good taste and the general decoration is a fusion of good all Venetian times with modern comfort. From the leaded vitreaux glass doors of the shower cabins, the superb sheet quality, cloth covered walls, marble floors, murano chandeliers, and carved wood work, the impression is of discreet elegance. We had a Junior suite of generous size divided between 2 floors, the bedroom with a balcony on the salon downstairs. We also had another Junior suite with an open plan layout and a little garden. Both were very nice and comfortable with huge compartimented marble bathrooms. All meals are served in a very nice restaurant open to an inner court enabling al fresco dining. Bar and living rooms are beautiful. Breakfast is served buffet style with nothing missing and an offer full of surprises. AC and WIFI work perfectly throughout. Two pools ( one for kids ) could not be nicer in a corner of the huge garden. Airelles managed to produce a hotel that beats Cipriani on all comparisons except Cipriani’s lagoon front terrace place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I would say that on all considerations from May to September it is now the best option for lodging in Venice. All staff we encountered were very kind, well trained and motivated. It will take some time for them to sincronice an excellent performance ( we had some solved minor problems) but knowing Airelles properties in other locations, this will happen very quickly. The city of Venice gained another jewel."
