PB hotel design editorial

Among the oldest hotels in Venice — and by some accounts in the world — the building that houses Baglioni Hotel Luna has served travellers since the twelfth century, when it functioned as a lodge for Knights Templar departing for the Crusades. That foundation gives the property on Calle Vallaresso, a short walk from Piazza San Marco and directly facing the Bacino, a weight of continuous habitation that no amount of contemporary repositioning could manufacture. The pale ochre facade, five storeys of Venetian neoclassical restraint with white-trimmed balustrades and shuttered windows, gives little away from the water. Inside, the interiors deploy the full vocabulary of Venetian decorative tradition without apology: Murano glass chandeliers with scrolled amber arms hang above herringbone parquet in rooms dressed in damask wallcovering — one scheme in dove blue with gilded Baroque headboards, another in champagne and plum with Louis XV-style marquetry writing desks. The bar, refurbished with a burnished bronze oval counter set against faux-marbled panels in amber and grey, a Murano crystal chandelier overhead and an eighteenth-century painting anchoring the back wall, handles the tension between period atmosphere and contemporary use with more composure than most Venetian interiors manage. Upper-floor rooms frame direct views across the lagoon to San Giorgio Maggiore — Palladio's white campanile visible through silk-draped windows, framed like a painting the hotel has always known was there.

"Feels like a 3 or 4 star hotel, certainly well short of a luxury five star experience. We booked a week in one of the best suites with a large terrace overlooking the lagoon. From initial check in we knew we had made a mistake. None of the professionalism you expect from a luxury hotel. The room was tired and in need of maintenance. NOT shabby chic, just shabby. The terrace was poorly maintained and the view included scaffolding right at the end of the terrace. The only thing to commend in the hotel was the lady bartender who made some great variations on a classic Negroni, was both friendly and professional and is frankly too good for the hotel. No milk or black tea on the room so called down for tea. Service was poor, with a surly comment about having to pay for the tea. Breakfast was another disappointment. The hall it is served in was once opulent but is patched and worn and the chairs cheap and uncomfortable. The breakfast service is a buffet scrum for mediocre food, reminded me of a low end Hilton in a provincial English town. Pastries were stale and an order from the à la carte menu was met with incredulity that anyone might actually want to pay extra for something better than the standard swill. We went straight around the corner and booked ourselves into the Gritti Palace which is a true five star experience and everything a quality hotel should be."

"This was such a lovely experience - suite was very comfortable, view was great, employees simply lovely … it came across so authentically that they cared about our experience, breakfast was great, ground / water transfers were executed flawlessly."

"The worst and the most outdated hotel! the condition of my room fell way far below the standards I expected. I paid 700 euro for a cracked ceiling bathroom and bad smell room. The breakfast is mediocre. You don't even deserve a three star! The bathroom was noticeably outdated, with serious wear and tear on the ceiling, disgusting bathtub and wall. There are chipped areas on the walls and ceiling, which gave the room an unmaintained and neglected appearance that a five star hotel shouldn’t have! Most concerning, however, was the significant presence of mosquitoes in the room. This not only caused disturbed sleep and discomfort on my daughter ‘s face but also raised concerns about hygiene and proper maintenance. My daughter has more than 20 mosquitoe bites on her face, And when you want to speak to someone about the concerns, they brush you off! Thank you for ruining my anniversary! And, If you book through Amex, they won’t give you any upgrades. They said i put two rooms on the same floor for your family is a upgrade! What!?"

"Great traditional hotel just steps from Piazza San Marco. Baglioni Hotel Luna has its own private dock for water taxis, making arrivals and departures incredibly convenient. The hotel features a fine-dining restaurant, a stylish bar, and a private-use spa. Breakfast is served in a stunning room and includes a generous buffet. A classic Venetian stay with charm and comfort in the perfect location."
