PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Venetian lagoon along the Riva dei Sette Martiri, a fifteenth-century pilgrim hospice built to shelter crusaders departing for the Holy Land now serves as Ca' di Dio, a hotel whose layered history carries more weight than almost any comparable property in the city. The building, whose stepped Istrian stone cornice is visible from the water, was sensitively converted by Patricia Urquiola — one of the few designers with both the confidence and the restraint to work against Venice's tendency toward Gothic excess. Her 65-room scheme, completed in 2021, treats the palazzo as a collaborator rather than a backdrop. The interiors move between two registers: a warm midcentury Italian sensibility in the guestrooms, where terrazzo floors, teal chenille sofas, burgundy velvet ottomans, and textured green wallcovering suggest a Venetian apartment assembled over decades rather than designed in a single pass, and a more polished public atmosphere in the bar, where fluted black Nero Marquina marble wraps the counter beneath walnut paneling and brass-trimmed shelving. Convex mirrors and amber Murano glass wall sconces carry the craft tradition of the city without resorting to pastiche. From the waterfront terrace — the building's single greatest asset — the campanile of San Marco sits directly in the sightline across the basin, the kind of view that no amount of interior design can manufacture and that Urquiola, to her credit, left entirely unframed.

"This hotel was dreamy....the decor was beautiful, the service was outstanding, and the location was perfecto- away from the crowds, but still in walking distance to all the main sites. Shout out to Marco and Giacomo at Alchemia bar who were an impressive team that welcomed us with open arms every night when we visited for a cocktail -before and after dinner! We only had 2 nights in Venice , but staying here magical ending to our vacation!"

"Booked for 4 nights to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday I booked a junior suite with views into the Courtyard, on arrival we were upgraded to a Lagoon view, absolutely gorgeous room and fantastic views. The staff are all so helpful and friendly. It's an elegant hotel and quietly sophisticated, not in your face in the slightest The breakfast is very good, both on quality and selection. The staff are exceptional My wife had a couple of spa treatments and thought they were wonderful The location was perfect for us Highly recommend if you want peace, quiet and low key luxury Get a wooden boat taxi there and arrive in style 😉"

"Great location: 30 minute water taxi from Marco Polo brings you directly to the properties private dock. Location is opposite the Vaporetti stops for the number 1 and Number 2 boats. Coop store for water, wine, beer, snacks is a 7 minute walk - left out of hotel, cross 2 bridges and make a left. Quiet and discreet - amazing breakfast - runs the entire spectrum. They run a free, private water taxi to Murano at 10:00, 11:00 and 14:00 - it’s definitely not the tourist heavy sell glass factory - not even close. If you can, grab a room with a lagoon view - 200/201 300/301 It’s not the Gritti and it doesn’t have the attitude. Instead, it’s a beautiful restored convent with passionate staff members who take a pride in their work."

"My wife and I had an utterly memorable stay at Ca' Di Dio. This relatively new boutique hotel exceeded all hopes and expectations. The location was quiet but close to "the scene," the staff was memorably dedicated to our enjoyment, and the dining at Vero was 5 star. Special mention goes to Ivan, one of the most energetic, helpful and accommodating concierges we have ever met; to Carmine, the head chef at Vero, an amazing talent; and to the service staff, including Dimitri, Angela & Beatrice. Our three days there capped a two week visit to various places in Europe, and it remains one of the stops we talk about the most. Arrivederci Ca' Di Dio!"
