PB hotel design editorial

Positioned on the Giudecca's northern edge with the entire Venetian skyline — San Giorgio Maggiore, the Campanile, the Doge's Palace — arrayed across the water like a painted backdrop, the Cipriani has held one of the great site advantages in European hospitality since Giuseppe Cipriani opened it in 1958. The property was conceived not as a palazzo conversion but as a purpose-built garden hotel, low-slung and terracotta-washed, its four floors stepping back from the lagoon in a manner that keeps the views generous from almost every angle. The Olympic-length pool, visible in the aerial image with white-canopied loungers ranged along its edge, remains one of the very few in Venice proper — a civilised impossibility in a city where flat ground is itself a luxury. Inside, the 96 rooms and suites draw on the full vocabulary of the Venetian decorative tradition without surrendering to pastiche. Lacquered bedheads in the Settecento manner sit against damask wallpapers in warm cream and gold; herringbone parquet floors anchor rooms furnished with painted Venetian case pieces and Persian rugs; blown-glass Murano chandeliers cast the kind of diffuse amber light that makes everything look like a Tiepolo. The lagoon-facing terrace restaurant, lit at dusk by iron lanterns and set with mosaic-topped tables directly above the water's edge, distils the property's essential proposition: that the most persuasive argument for staying on the Giudecca is the view back toward a city you are relieved, briefly, not to be inside.

"The service at this hotel is poor. Check in staff are miserable (especially the woman who wears her hair in a low ponytail) and rude and the guest relations manager Barbara is useless. Don’t go here expecting the Belmond experience or service. We chose this hotel because of the Belmond name but we would have been better off choosing the St Regis or Aman had we had known the Belmond service here is non existent. The only saving grace of this hotel is the gentleman Andrea and the gentleman at concierge Good things Location Free 24 hour shuttle Views"

"In La Serenissima at The Hotel Cipriani! We were originally scheduled to come here to celebrate my 60th Birthday, but - sadly - Covid put paid to that. So, the expectation when we finally arrived here, some 6 years later was, naturally, very high. I needn't have worried. From our arrival at the hotel's own private jetty, to departure from the same dock 3 days later, the whole experience was just divine. And that first view of the hotel from the lagoon!! A lovely warm welcome, which really set the tone for our stay. All the staff were just so polite, friendly and courteous - and natural. We're very lucky in that we have been able to stay at some of the best hotels around the world. The Cipriani is right there at the top with them. We always look for things that set "the best" apart. Here it is, undoubtedly, the staff but also the personal individual touches. Like the lovely welcome table of gifts in our room. A bottle of Ruinart champagne on ice, a lovely home made frangipane tart, a bowl of apricots and blackberries and a fascinating novel by Casanova. Even our own very stylish pool bag to use and take home - so special and so Cipriani. And the view from our room across the Grand Canal to St Marks- died & gone to Heaven!! We thought our room was of a very good size, with a very well planned layout - it felt more like a junior suite. Located off a corridor near Cips, it actually felt more like our own private apartment. We dined twice at Cips - fabulous views of the sunsets, and once at Porticciolo - excellent food & service. They even made me my special cocktail - The Last Word! All the team were very attentive, even bringing my wife a shawl as the evening cooled- so thoughtful, and so classy. We'd like to specially mention Isaac - our young waiter from Morocco, Thisan in Cips who was so professional, courteous and just "on it." Also, Joshua at the waterfront bar/restaurant who brought us complimentary strawberries with our Bellinis, and recommended a tower with spectacular views near St Marco - a lovely guy. Lastly, Alessandra at breakfast, who looked after us so well, and was so observant, remembering all our preferences & likes after just one morning. She is a real asset to the hotel. All the guys on Concierge were very polite, helpful & immaculately dressed. A lovely Dior boutique too, with very friendly smiling girls. Just a few suggestions - the evenings did get quite chilly - especially when we dined at the "pop up" themed Taste of Regional Italy restaurant. It would be nice to have some portable outdoor heaters. Also, perhaps the hotel shop could also stock more Hotel branded merchandise- e.g. polo shirts, T-shirts etc & postcards alongside the more high end fashions. Again though - lovely staff. So, all in all, a wonderful stay that far exceeded our hopes. We Would love to return - perhaps for our Wedding Anniversary, or a Birthday. This truly is La Dolce Vita!!"

"Amazing hotel with a friendly, professional team. Nothing was too much trouble. The shuttle boat service too and from St Mark’s Square ran all day and night. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely"
