PB hotel design editorial

Behind an unmarked brick facade on Calle degli Avvocati, number 3836, a fifteenth-century Venetian palazzo has been converted into Corte di Gabriela with an approach that refuses to choose between the building's history and a contemporary sensibility. The entrance — a stone-framed doorway barely wider than a single person, opening onto a corridor that leads into a sequence of progressively grander rooms — sets up a spatial drama that the palazzo's original builders understood instinctively. What the images reveal is a property that lets its structural inheritance do the heavy lifting. The lobby and bar area preserve original terrazzo floors inlaid with compass-point medallions, coffered timber ceilings painted in deep lacquer, and pairs of veined marble columns that no contemporary budget could convincingly replicate. Against this, the furnishings introduce mid-century Italian references — a grand piano, olive-green velvet armchairs on splayed legs, a Murano glass disc sculpture — without staging a period-room pastiche. Guest rooms shift register depending on their position within the building: upper-floor suites expose rough brick walls backlit behind the headboard and retain exposed timber beams above terrazzo floors, while standard rooms layer aubergine wall paint and taupe curtaining over parquet in a palette closer to contemporary Milan than historic Venice. The whole property runs to around ten rooms, which keeps the scale intimate enough that the building's character remains legible rather than diluted.

"This charming, gracious, small hotel truly made our experience in Venice superlative. With two rooms we can speak to the differences... our sons shared a beautiful double just off the gorgeous 1st floor sitting area, but my husband and I were lucky enough to have the junior suite above the canal on the 2nd floor. The ceiling was stunning, the king bed incredibly comfortable, the space and amenities had us feeling like royalty. The bathroom has everything needed, a refreshing shower, luxury toiletries, all in a compact space - they even supply a dryer and flatiron. Our small balcony was lovely just for sitting with a coffee or enjoying the sounds on a quiet side canal. The real star here is the breakfast. If it hadn't been raining, we could have enjoyed a luxurious morning on the patio but we were in a rush for a walking tour so had to wait a bit for a table inside...worth the wait! The charming owner and staff of this hotel really exemplify understated hospitality of the highest order."

"Great location, wonderful breakfasts, and incredibly (and I do mean incredibly) helpful staff. Venice itself may be exhausting but this oasis of calm made our trip memorable."

"Venice was the first stop on our two-week Italian vacation, but despite an exciting intinerary that includled stops in Florence, Sorrento and Rome to look forward to, it wa sad leaving after only two days because of our experience at Corte di Gabriela. Everything about the hotel was first class. Our ground floor room was a work of art thanks to the beautiful frescoes on the ceiling and it was filled with plenty of high-end amenities. The location was perfect, on a quiet canal just a short walk from the Sant'Angelo Vaporetto stop and close to St. Mark's Square and all the other important attractions. And the breakfast that was included as part of our stay was the best I have ever seen at a hotel. Not only was there an incredible spread of fruits, pastries, cheese and cold cuts, but upon being seated our table was quickly filled with other delacies including warm mini pizzas, smoked salmon and stewed tomatoes. After all that, the attendant then asked how we would like our eggs cooked by the chef who was manning the kitchen. It was all incredibly delicious! Beyond the physical attributes, the other thing that sets this property apart is the staff. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful, including a wonderful front desk manager (whose name I wish I had gotten) who provided us with directions, Vaporetto schedules and restaurant recommendations every time we asked. It's a shame we can only give Corte di Gabriella five stars, because it deserves at least twice that many!"
