PB hotel design editorial

On the Riva degli Schiavoni, where the lagoon opens toward the Salute and the Doge's Palace stands close enough to touch, three interconnected Venetian palaces have housed one of Europe's most storied hotels since 1822. The centrepiece, Palazzo Dandolo, dates to around 1471 and presents one of the finest surviving examples of Venetian Gothic civic architecture: its pink-tinged facade, pointed arched windows, and elaborate stone tracery have remained essentially unchanged for five centuries. Danieli, Venezia, A Four Seasons Hotel reopened in July 2026 following a comprehensive restoration, with Paris-based Pierre-Yves Rochon leading the interior renovation across 120 rooms and suites spanning the Palazzo Dandolo, Palazzo Casa Nuova, and Palazzo Danieli Excelsior. Rochon's approach is to honour the material intelligence that Venice has always exported: Murano glass chandeliers hang in bedrooms finished with Rubelli silk damask wall coverings, their baroque floral patterns setting a tone of patrician seriousness, while other rooms take a softer direction, with gold-accented upholstered headboards, grey silk curtains, and terrazzo floors in muted geometric patterns drawn from Venetian craft tradition. The rooftop restaurant, visible in the images, is fitted with a mirrored ceiling criss-crossed by gilded bronze framing, large picture windows framing the campanile and San Marco's roofline as a living backdrop. Sunset from the terrace above presents the basilica, the lagoon, and Santa Maria della Salute in a single unobstructed sweep — the kind of view that makes all design conversation briefly unnecessary.
