PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1525 as the private residence of Andrea Gritti, Doge of Venice, the Gothic-Renaissance palazzo on the Grand Canal has carried the weight of Venetian power ever since — Somerset Maugham drank here, Hemingway wrote here, and the Hotel Gritti Palace has held its place among Europe's most historically saturated addresses across five centuries of continuous occupation. The building's terracotta brick facade, with its distinctive pointed Gothic arches rising across four floors, faces directly onto the canal with the kind of unmediated waterfront presence that no amount of contemporary hotel engineering can manufacture from scratch. A 2013 restoration overseen by the Wtc Design Group returned 82 rooms and suites to a condition that honors the palazzo's accumulated decorative history rather than rationalizing it away. Each room follows its own logic: one suite unfolds in blush stucco with gilded cartouches, a Louis XV bed frame upholstered in floral fabric, and a foxed Venetian mirror catching canal light through full-height French doors; another works a cooler palette of slate-blue velvet, tufted headboard with nailhead trim, and an antique kilim anchoring the parquet floor beneath a Murano glass chandelier. The bar, lined in verde antico marble panels and etched antique mirror, its terrazzo floor inlaid with mosaic medallions, carries the atmosphere of a patrician salon that has absorbed decades of very good conversation. The floating terrace — teak-decked, banked with pink geraniums — extends the palazzo directly onto the water.

"The hotel just screams Venice. From its location right on the Grand Canal to the classic Venetian decor, it sets a perfect backdrop from which to enjoy Venice. Spacious and well appointed rooms, intimate and attentive service are highlights. There is a compact but well equipped fitness room. Breakfast on the terrace was delightful with some of the best pastries I’ve ever seen on a breakfast buffet (the Nutella and caramel filled brioche was even more decadent than it sounds). We also enjoyed a light bite in the bar which was relaxing but definitely not inexpensive. It’s a piece of living history that’s well worth experiencing."

"If I can give 10 out of 5 it won’t be enough. Some hotels are luxurious. Some are beautiful. But very few make you feel genuinely cared for in the way The Gritti does. From the moment I arrived, everything felt effortless. The concierge team, reception, housekeeping, Club del Doge, the bar — every single person created an atmosphere of warmth, elegance, and true attention to detail. You never feel like “just a guest.” Somehow they always anticipate what you may need before you even ask. This is the kind of hotel that works equally beautifully for every occasion — whether it is a romantic escape, a family celebration across generations, or simply time alone to slow down and enjoy Venice. There is a rare feeling of emotional comfort here that is difficult to explain until you experience it yourself. I was travelling alone, and the level of genuine care and kindness I felt throughout the stay was extraordinary. Nothing felt forced or overly formal — just natural hospitality of the highest level. I stayed in two rooms during my visit and was later upgraded to a suite. Everything was immaculate, elegant, calm, and thoughtful. Honestly, it is difficult to imagine what could have been done better. In a world where many luxury hotels try hard to impress, The Gritti Palace does something much rarer: it makes you feel completely at home while still feeling unmistakably special. One of the most memorable hospitality experiences I’ve had."

"Our stay in Venice was nothing short of unforgettable, and a huge part of that magic was our time at this incredible historic hotel on the Grand Canal - The Gritti Palace. From the moment we arrived by boat and were warmly welcomed at the entrance, we felt completely transported—both in time and in experience. The property itself is stunning, full of rich Venetian character and timeless elegance. It beautifully preserves that old-world charm while still feeling refined and comfortable. Honestly, it felt like a destination in itself—we could have happily spent our entire time there without ever leaving. A very special thank you to Geraldine, who truly went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional. Her care, attention, and personal touch made a lasting impression, and we’re so grateful for the role she played in creating such a memorable experience. We also want to recognize Gianmarco, Antonella, and Alessandro, who were all incredibly kind, professional, and welcoming throughout our stay. The level of hospitality across the board was outstanding. Some highlights: waking up to the Grand Canal, enjoying an incredible breakfast right by the water, relaxing drinks at the bar, and simply soaking in the atmosphere of such a historic and beautifully maintained space. The room was exquisite, the bed was very comfortable, and even the smallest details felt thoughtful and intentional. This is more than just a place to stay—it’s an experience. Whether you’re staying overnight or simply stopping in for a drink, it’s absolutely worth it. We left feeling grateful, taken care of, and already dreaming about returning. Highly, highly recommend."

"Considering a long awaited bucket list stay, expectations were high and Gritti did not disappoint! Firstly Geraldine reached out in advance with regard to room preference. When we spoke she described the difference between rooms and we were able to make an informed decision. The room did not disappoint! That view of the Grand Canal was continuously enchanting and we spent much time taking it all in. Upon arrival Gianmarco met us at the dock and helped us with our bags with a friendly smile. Breakfast was always delicious and service was extraordinary from Antonella and Alessandro, with Elena always getting us the best table by the water! We will never forget this very special place and hope to return often!! Grazie Mille Gritti staff!!"

"We finally managed to return to Venice after about 11 years, and same as our previous visits, we stayed at the amazing Gritti Palace. The hotel is right on the Grand Canal, with its own taxi pier. We were welcomed and whisked off to reception, checked in and shown to our room in record time. The room was spotlessly clean, a nice size and with daily complimentary water. The bed was absolutely huge and the room itself was very comfortable all round. The weather wasn’t the greatest the first day, so we sat in the bar having a drink and some bites and doing a bit of people watching as the staff in the bar looked after us. Breakfast is buffet style with cooked options off the menu, coffee and drinks on tap, and of course, mimosas if you like! The staff at breakfast (and all over the hotel too) were extremely attentive and very helpful. Nothing was a problem for them. The first day we were inside, but the second day we were lucky enough to be out on the terrace. What an absolutely amazing experience this is, having breakfast on the Grand Canal and watching the gondoliers, taxis, water buses etc going about their day. There really is something magical about the whole experience. Location is perfect, just a few minutes walk from the San Marco square and the Rialto Bridge, and quite easy to navigate to and from the hotel. Again, the staff are so friendly and helpful, and they and the hotel are still awesome after all these years, and we will definitely be back next year."
