PB hotel design editorial

Directly beside the Rialto fish market, where the fondamenta runs along the Grand Canal with the Gothic arches of the Pescaria visible just steps away, a cluster of medieval Venetian buildings was converted into Hotel L'Orologio Venice — a property whose most disciplined achievement is resisting the temptation to compete with its surroundings. The WTB Hotels group brought in a restrained contemporary hand for the interiors, threading mid-century Italian furniture through rooms whose original exposed timber ceiling beams were whitewashed and left structurally exposed rather than concealed behind plasterwork. The Canal Grande rooms frame direct sightlines across the water to the palazzi opposite, terracotta-toned wainscoting anchoring a palette of black lacquered desks, leather chairs, and linen curtains that moves closer to a Milanese residential register than the gilded Venetian baroque most competitors default to. The bar works a different mood entirely — dark polished stone countertops, backlit brass-tinted shelving, worn original beams overhead stained deep brown, and resin-sealed terracotta floors that absorb the low lighting into something more reminiscent of a serious cocktail room in Rome's Prati neighbourhood than a hotel bar in Venice. Outside, the canalside terrace set with Moroccan lanterns and black iron bistro furniture runs right to the water's edge, the Pescaria's brick arches glowing amber at dusk behind it. For a city where historical atmosphere is frequently performed rather than inhabited, the property manages something genuinely useful: a contemporary interior that lets the building, and the canal, do the talking.

"This hotel has a great location for the main sights in Venice. Only 5 minutes walk to the Rialto bridge and 10-15 minutes to St Marks Square and 20 minutes walk to Piazzale Roma (the main transport hub for buses and trains). Very stylish rooms, comfortable beds and modern feel to the hotel. Spotlessly clean. Really great breakfast in the morning, lots of variety and a nice cocktail bar for the evening. Some great restaurants just a few minutes walk around the corner. Highly recommend the Osteria Sora Al Ponte and the Porta d’acqua near the Rialto bridge. Very friendly and helpful concierge service. Would definitely stay here again."

"A good hotel close to the Rialto Bridge and conveniently located on the Grand Canal…we arrived early and after a 20 minute wait were allowed to enter our room..A Deluxe Canal View Room. The room was of an adequate size compared to rooms in other European cities but felt a bit dated. The bathroom also felt dated. There were dirty finger marks on the doors and marks on the walls. The most annoying thing about our stay was the card entry into the room which seemed to have a mind of its own.. sometimes taken 7/8 attempts to open the room door. The fridge in the room was very very noisy at one point we woke in the middle of the night thinking somebody had started an outboard motor on the boat outside the hotel.. we eventually unplugged it… the rooms also allow a lot of sound to come in from the corridor which again is annoying whilst asleep. This is in part i assume due to the wooden floors. Apart from these issues the staff were very friendly and helpful. The barman especially deserves a mention as he was on point with his service. The location is ideal. A good hotel…"

"The Hotel L'Orologio was fantastic, we had a canal view suite and it was amazing. Although it was January the hotel was quite busy but never too busy. The staff were so welcoming and helpful, recommending restaurants to try as they only served breakfast. The buffet breakfast had lots of choice including Prosecco which was a treat each morning. In the evening there was a cocktail bar with again very knowledgable and attentive staff. The ambiance in the evening was relaxed with candles and low lighting. The hotel is in a very central location near the daily market. There are many restaurants close by and any we tried were always good and not too expensive, only slightly dearer than similar in UK. We liked the interior of the hotel which was modern with the the original walls showcased in places."

"Perfect location this was our 2nd visit to Venice just love the place , last time we stayed close to St Marks Sq , this time we stayed in the L’Orologio hotel just 5 minutes away from the Rialto bridge between those 5 minute walk is the fish and vegetable markets , restaurants, chicetti bars , pizza shops, pattiserie everything you want , the hotel itself serves a plentiful breakfast banquet, the bar opens at 4.15 admittedly drinks are expensive but they usually are in Venice hotels the staff are very helpful and professional , the rooms are well furnished and cleaned every day with an additional early evening visit to leave chocolates and slippers by your bed , I would definitely recommend this hotel especially if you have a canal view 👍👨🏻‍🍳"

"Quirky, dark, modern hotel with generally very friendly, helpful staff. Great location. Buffet breakfast basic. Low quality bread. Dish of completely burnt bacon. Staff delivered jug of milk to table which she spilt but did not return to wipe it up. Cleanliness generally very good. However, on arrival in the room the tea mugs were found to be dirty. Room small but adequate. Fridge was constantly noisy. Bed comfortable. Needed to use hand held shower and had to keep pressing shower button in to stop main rain shower from starting."
