PB hotel design editorial

Directly beside the Rialto fish market, where the fondamenta runs along the Grand Canal with the Gothic arches of the Pescaria visible just steps away, a cluster of medieval Venetian buildings was converted into Hotel L'Orologio Venice — a property whose most disciplined achievement is resisting the temptation to compete with its surroundings. The WTB Hotels group brought in a restrained contemporary hand for the interiors, threading mid-century Italian furniture through rooms whose original exposed timber ceiling beams were whitewashed and left structurally exposed rather than concealed behind plasterwork. The Canal Grande rooms frame direct sightlines across the water to the palazzi opposite, terracotta-toned wainscoting anchoring a palette of black lacquered desks, leather chairs, and linen curtains that moves closer to a Milanese residential register than the gilded Venetian baroque most competitors default to. The bar works a different mood entirely — dark polished stone countertops, backlit brass-tinted shelving, worn original beams overhead stained deep brown, and resin-sealed terracotta floors that absorb the low lighting into something more reminiscent of a serious cocktail room in Rome's Prati neighbourhood than a hotel bar in Venice. Outside, the canalside terrace set with Moroccan lanterns and black iron bistro furniture runs right to the water's edge, the Pescaria's brick arches glowing amber at dusk behind it. For a city where historical atmosphere is frequently performed rather than inhabited, the property manages something genuinely useful: a contemporary interior that lets the building, and the canal, do the talking.

"Cannot speak highly enough about this gem of a hotel. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Staff are simply amazing, 5 star service throughout our stay. Very close to the Rialto bridge which was a great landmark for us as we managed to lose ourselves many times in the City, but you can usually find a sign Per Rialto which helped navigate us back to the hotel. Special touch (complimentary bottle of Prosecco) provided but the hotel for my sister who was celebrating her 60th. They also helped me organise a private taxi to the airport as a surprise for her and never let the surprise slip. Excellent choice of food for breakfast and plenty of variety. Lovely to sit in the dining area, looking out over the canal. The hotel is very special, in a very special city, I won’t stay anywhere else when I return."

"This hotel has a wonderful location right on the Grand Canal. We arrived at Marco Polo airport at sunset, and it is a magical experience to take a water taxi to cruise down the Grand Canal as darkness falls, and then to arrive at the hotel's private dock. The hotel is a 5-minute walk to the Rialto Bridge, less than 15 minutes to St Marks Square, and is under 20 minutes to catch the waterbus service to Murano & Burano (although in practice all journey times will be longer, as you will frequently stop to admire a myriad of sites and views). The front of house and restaurant staff are friendly and helpful, providing good service, although we did experience inconsistent room cleaning (e.g. one day being left with no towels). The breakfast is decent. We had a superior twin room on the first floor which while small and with limited storage space, had very comfortable beds and an excellent powerful shower. Bizarrely it had a separate toilet to bathroom - which meant you had to walk to the other side of the bedroom to wash your hands, which I don't think is particularly hygienic. The black and red decor in the room and throughout the hotel is elegant but made everywhere overpoweringly dark. However, when in Venice you are not there to stay in the hotel but to explore this wonderful city - and for that the L'Orologio is an excellent base."

"Excellent hotel with nice rooms (we had a canal view) which made our stay a little more special. Staff were attentive and very friendly. Greeted on the dockside as we arrived by private water taxi, quick check in and then shown directly to our room which wasn’t huge but very clean and comfortable with a view to die for. Everything we needed was in the room and complimentary water provided which wasn’t huge great. Used the bar a couple of times in the evening and a nice choice of cocktails and spritzes were on offer. Breakfast had plenty of choice and food was all of good standard. Reception recommended a great local restaurant when we decided we were all walked out on one evening. Check out was prompt and efficient and again we were helped to board our water taxi at the dockside. All in all a pleasant 3 night stay and would happily recommend this hotel to others."

"Another great stay at L’Orologio; this hotel is located in a less hectic section of the Grand Canal, just past the bustling Rialto markets and surrounded by a variety of restaurants, cafes and wine bars. L’Orologio has its own boat dock, ideal for taking a private water taxi to/from the airport (it’s a regulated fare currently €150 each way). Well maintained with attractive public areas and contemporary design bedrooms and bathrooms. Excellent front desk service sets the standard through the hotel. Wonderful breakfast buffet and the evening bar service is knowledgeable and friendly. Part of the small WHY the Best Italian hotel group that offers competitive rates through its website with sister hotels in Florence and Rome. Recommend highly."

"Our first trip to Venice and we were more than happy with our choice of hotel. Situated on the Grand Canal, Hotel L'Orologio is well placed with the Rialto bridge and St Marks Square a short walk away, however the hotel feels tucked away and off the tourist trail which was great. We arrived by water taxi right outside the hotel and were greeted immediately by a porter who helped us with our cases. We arrived in the morning so our room was not ready but at reception we were given a map and some helpful information and sent off to explore! Standard check in is 3pm but they kindly got our room ready early so when we returned around 2pm we were able to go to our room. As other guests have mentioned, the room (and hotel generally) is quite dark (we were in a room at the side of the building so very little natural light). I do wonder if the room may feel a little claustrophobic in the summer when it's light outside until late at night but in March it wasn't an issue. We did find the room and bathroom very clean with absolutely everything we needed for a three night stay. Granted there is not much space for luggage or toiletries but for a short stay we were fine. Breakfast was a pleasant surprise with plenty of choice; pastries, fruit, ham, cheeses, scrambled eggs (delicious), bacon, yoghurt, juices and Prosecco (help yourself, don't mind if we do!). There is no restaurant (and we didn't drink in the bar), but there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. We found all of the staff very polite, friendly and helpful. Overall, we would recommend this hotel for its location and good value for money (for a room without a Grand Canal view)."
