PB hotel design editorial

Two Gothic-revival palazzi facing the Zattere waterfront in Dorsoduro — the former headquarters of the Adriatica di Navigazione shipping company, their pointed Venetian arches and terracotta brick facades still carrying the company's gilded signage — were converted in 2019 into Il Palazzo Experimental, the Parisian hospitality group's first Italian venture. The interior transformation was handed to Dorothée Meilichzon, Experimental Group's in-house creative director, whose approach here is more confident and more architecturally conversational than almost anything she had produced previously. The Gothic window tracery becomes a recurring compositional motif inside: Meilichzon echoes the building's ogee arches in custom headboards upholstered in navy velvet and pale grey ribbed fabric, in arched mirror frames outlined in aubergine-lacquered steel in the bar, and in the tall plaster surrounds of the restaurant's full-height windows. That dining room, with its Calacatta marble pedestal tables, dark walnut banquette dividers, forest-green half-wall panelling, and Venetian terrazzo floor, draws the Adriatic light inward without competing with the canal views directly beyond. Bedrooms alternate between terracotta-pink Venetian plaster with burnt-sienna wainscoting and cooler mineral grey, each furnished with a low rounded armchair in salmon velvet that carries a faint echo of Carlo Mollino. The cocktail bar compresses everything into a single jewellery-box room: plum walls, brass pendant rings, a curved black granite counter, and Murano-glass mirror detailing that acknowledges exactly where you are without resorting to pastiche.

"I am writing this with deep disappointment. My booking.com account was hacked and this hacker made a reservation to this hotel. Apparently I didnt know about this. The hotel contacts me for no -show, and I explained to them that the booking was not made by me. They apologised for the inconvenience, making me think that this is resolved. However the next day, they charge me for 1000€. When asked for a refund for the charge they made, they ask me to contact booking.com. I am very disappointed."

"My partner and I had a brilliant stay at Palazzo Experimental! Highlights include: - VIEW - we booked a room with a canal view, and this was ABSOLUTELY worth it - totally magical and romantic, and with sunrise and sunset every morning and evening in the winter. - Room - large, comfortable, clean and stylish. - Bar - very nice and cool cocktail bar, opening out onto the Zattere. Delicious cocktails and great service by knowledgable staff. - Location - really near main attractions (super walkable), but out of the main tourist bustle. - General style - the aesthetic of the hotel is cool and stylish - feels a bit different to other places, with a strong Venetian feel and identity. Upmarket feel. - Good value prices!"

"Very nice hotel in a convenient location out of the more central area, yet within walkable distance from both Rialto and St. Marks. Academia bridge and the best museums, as well as many small galleries are a short walk away. Good spot to see the venetians in their daily lives. Public boats are also widely available in Zattere, to get you everywhere. The atmosphere is young and relaxed. Rooms are beautifull, with many details, both modern and respectfull of venitian history. Mine overlooked the water, with 3 big windows, and was well stocked and immaculately clean. The restaurant was nice and delivered a satisfactory breakfast. Pancakes are great. Service was youthfull and careless. If you address the staff, they will reply warm and casually - if you don’t, they’ll probably don’t even know you’re there. Don’t expect to be pampered. The details of architecture and decor are truly worthy of notice. Value is great."

"Just spent four nights at this beautiful hotel in mid-November. We absolutely loved our stay at Il Palazzo Experimental. I think every part of our experience met or exceeded our expectations. The staff was welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We booked through Mr. and Mrs. Smith and were welcomed with a free cocktail in their amazing Experimental Cocktail Club (even if you're not staying in the hotel, you should come here for a drink, more on this later). The hotel is in an excellent location. Right on a larger canal, with lots of restaurants and bars along the water. This area felt a bit touristy (but not in a bad way). But if you head into the city you find yourself in a quiet but active neighborhood with great restaurants, bars, shops, etc. We really enjoyed walking around the neighborhood near the hotel, as it was much less hectic than the center area around San Marco's. But you're still a close walk to the center and all the main tourist attractions. We booked a canal view room and it was 100% worth it. We loved looking out at the water in the mornings and evenings. The room itself was very spacious, with a nice couch and a comfortable king sized bed. If I had one (tiny) complaint it was that the pillows were extremely firm - to the point of being hard. The room had a beautiful bathroom with a large tub and shower. Separate sinks are a luxury you don't always see in small European hotels, so that was a nice touch as well. We did have a light breakfast in the hotel two mornings. Everything was delicious - fantastic coffee and wonderful pastries. While there are some excellent places nearby to get a breakfast on the go, it was nice to have a slow morning in the hotel restaurant, which has a very fun and funky vibe while still being very classy. The Experimental Cocktail Club was without a doubt a highlight of our stay. Had drinks there 3 of the 4 nights we spent. They make some of the most innovative cocktails I've seen anywhere in the world, and it's worth stepping out of your comfort zone a bit and trusting their genius. And I have to shout out the menu, which is an incredible work of art in and of itself. The staff here in the bar were among the best I experienced anywhere in Venice - they truly take pride in what they do and I would strongly encourage you to come enjoy an evening here (even if you're not staying in the hotel). And don't skip the food menu - the small bites were stellar! All in all, we loved our stay at Il Palazzo Experimental and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a place that's close to highlights of Venice, while being just far enough removed to be an oasis away from the chaos."
