PB hotel design editorial

Bringing a Parisian hospitality sensibility into the fabric of a sixteenth-century Venetian palazzo was always going to require a particular kind of nerve. The Evok Group managed it with Nolinski Venezia, which opened in 2019 within a historic building near Campo San Luca, its terracotta-washed facade, white Istrian stone detailing, and arched windows — visible in the image — placing it squarely within the Serenissima's architectural grammar. French interior designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte, whose studio has worked across cultural institutions and hospitality projects throughout Europe, handled the interiors across the hotel's 32 rooms and suites, navigating between Venetian decorative tradition and a spare Parisian modernism that Evok's other properties, including the original Nolinski in Paris, have made their signature. The tension between those two sensibilities runs through every space. Guestrooms are divided between two distinct registers: some lined in large-format veined marble with black steel-framed glazed partitions and blush linen benches, others warmer in tone with herringbone parquet, crimson lacquered armchairs, pink velvet sofas, and arched timber windows dressed in floor-length drapes. The bar, the property's most atmospheric room, is upholstered entirely in deep garnet velvet, its ceiling covered in a figurative fresco referencing the winged lion of Saint Mark, its shelves floor-to-ceiling with books and backlit spirits. Above it all, the rooftop spa pool is finished in gold mosaic tile, its low clerestory windows framing the city's domes and campanili like a sequence of painted panels.

About

A few canals over from the Piazza San Marco and La Fenice opera house stands the Nolinski Venezia, a 5 star hotel. Its majestic façade, adorned with mythical creatures, the daughters of Poseidon, reminds us of the potency that La Serenissima draws from its waters. Here we enter Venetian history through the doors of the old Stock Exchange. Art Nouveau, Stile Liberty and Modernism are brought together in well-proportioned harmony, enhanced by the work of interior designers Le Coadic Scotto.

"This was such a fantastic hotel, I cannot say enough good things. The rooms were modern with an eclectic design. Concierge recommended an off the beaten path dinner spot that was amazing. This hotel might have my favorite hotel bar ever, cool, sexy amazing drinks. I could have stayed all night at the bar. Hotel breakfast was one of the finest I have ever had in Europe. I was sad I couldn’t stay longer."

"My sister / her friend & I stayed at this property in Feb 26 and we had a fantastic time . The hotel is luxurious even though it’s not next to a canal ( and to be honest unless you’re on the main canal I don’t see the point ) and is super convenient. 5 mins from St Mark’s basilica and surrounded by brand name stores ( if that’s your thing) with tons of restaurants within walking distance. The services - front desk / concierge- who organized our airport / train transfers / the porters who help us with our luggages from the dock to the hotel ( 2 mins walk ) as well as the amazing staffs at breakfast were outstanding . The à la carte breakfast itself was amazing . Large selections of everything with all the different types of breads / croissants you can eat . Our Deluxe rooms were spacious with huge bathrooms . The hotel has a wellness / spa center and a pool though I didn’t use neither . There is a pretty little bar next to the lobby as well . Will definitely be back ."

"This hotel on first appearance strikes you as very luxurious. However, you soon realise comfort, convenience and practicalities have been sacrificed in the name of style. Having paid a very high premium to stay over new year you suddenly find yourself living out of a suitcase like a student in a hostel. Half the wardrobe is taken up with a full size fridge. There are no drawers or shelves to put your smaller items such as underwear. There is no space for toiletries in the bathroom. A huge brass sink which I’m sure housekeeping must love to polish every day with no space around it or even an edge to balance things in. We counted more than 30 art books in the room. The shelf space below the TV could have been better utilised with a chest of drawers. There was one chair in the room forcing the other guest to sit on the bed. The bar area is very small so every evening there were dozens of guests spilling out into the lobby in order to get a drink. We felt the the small pool on the roof was really a waste of space that would have been much better suited as the bar area with views over to the Campanille. In fact the only space in the hotel with any views. No idea how many people use it was completely dead when we went up there. The breakfast room was huge and again not used at any other time of the day, another possible location for the bar over flow? We booked in for the New Year’s Eve meal at the restaurant. Food was exceptionally good, although we did think €80 for a steak they could have given you a little bit of vegetable! All in all not a bad stay but think they need to address storage issues the room."

"Nolinski is a large but quiet modern restaurant in the heart of Venice serving fresh pasta and gnocchi. Also wonderful desserts including profiteroles and affogato. Excellent service in a beautiful setting."
