PB hotel design editorial

Floating free of Venice's crowds on its own private island in the southern lagoon, the complex that became San Clemente Palace Kempinski carries more than nine centuries of accumulated history — a twelfth-century church, a sequence of monastic cloisters, and later additions that served variously as a hospice and a psychiatric institution before the entire island was converted into a hotel in 2003. The pink-rendered palazzo visible from the water, with its Venetian Gothic detailing and stone quayside, frames an arrival by private launch that no mainland property can replicate — San Clemente sits roughly fifteen minutes from Piazza San Marco, close enough to see the campanile through the arched windows yet far enough to feel genuinely removed from the city. Inside, the 190 rooms and suites move between two registers. The grander lagoon-facing rooms carry original dark timber beam ceilings, terracotta pavimento floors, and four-poster beds upholstered in cartographic brocade, with Murano glass chandeliers casting amber light across cream-painted walls — San Giorgio Maggiore visible through arched wooden-framed windows in the finest suites. The bar and lounge areas work a more polished, Art Deco-inflected language: floor-to-ceiling gridded mirror panels, crushed-velvet barrel chairs in taupe and silver, ironwork gate details, and patterned wool carpet in amber and charcoal. Outside, a large oval pool set within the island's three hectares of gardens provides something genuinely rare in Venice — the sensation of a resort, with white canopied daybeds arranged against a backdrop of cypress and plane trees.

"We stayed at San Clemente Palace for three nights October 2,3, and 4 in 2025. We were with Viking’s pre-cruise extension in Venice. We enjoyed every moment of our stay. A most interesting island setting, full of charm. Gracious and attentive staff. A very comfortable room with an unforgettable view across the lagoon. Breakfasts were sumptuous. Our compliments to the baker for his or her wonderful bread. One of the guest services staff (Elena, I think) went out of her way to compile and print out some of the historical information on the island and specifically the church and the history surrounding the former monastery on the island."

"My stay was great. This is a wonderful hotel in a beautiful setting. I ate in the bar and it was very good. the Tiramasu is the best I have ever had. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I walked around the island and there are a lot of beautiful sites to see."

"The lush, expansive gardens are simply unmatched, as are the activities on offer – from cycling around the island and reading while watching the sunset, to playing tennis or taking peaceful walks. It’s an experience that’s almost impossible to find anywhere else in Venice. The rooms were spacious, and as the hotel has been recently refurbished, everything is in perfect condition. The main building feels like a palace, with its wide corridors and magnificent staircases adorned with Murano chandeliers, giving the impression of residing in a royal residence. The staff were genuinely warm and welcoming, and the breakfast was delicious – plentiful without being wasteful, striking exactly the right balance in every respect. As the hotel is only a few years past its inauguration, it still feels as though certain aspects could be further refined. If you’re hungry and not especially patient, I would advise against dining at the bar. We tried on three occasions, and the shortest waiting time from order to service was forty-five minutes – once exceeding an hour – far too long for a simple club sandwich. In addition, special requests don’t always seem to be properly noted. I asked for fresh milk to be kept in the minibar throughout my stay; it was only provided on the first day and again on the day I reminded them. On the remaining days, there was none. A minor detail, perhaps, but one that feels out of place in a hotel of such otherwise impeccable standards."

"Service appalling but food okay. Waited over half an hour for a drink and people who arrived after got served before. Staff and manager not good, headless chickens???? On an island so nowhere else to go!!"

"An extraordinary location. Staff were very warm & welcoming. We had requested a special picnic to share with dear friends who live in Trieste & Elena & Darya communicated with me prior to our arrival, & organised it magnificently. Darya looked after us & checked all the details with us, even making a special celebratory effort for one of the young members of the group who had just achieved an extraordinary Italian National milestone. We found many staff members contributed very positively to our stay! Thanks to Tiziano & Elena, but a very special thank you to Darya! Robyn & Rob"
