Right where the Grand Canal widens toward the Santa Maria della Salute — Longhena's great baroque dome visible from every canal-facing window — a fifteenth-century Gothic palazzo that once served as the Venetian headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian Customs Authority now carries the Sina Centurion Palace. The building's facade, four storeys of warm Venetian brick articulated by white Istrian stone tracery in the pointed-arch Gothic manner, presents one of the canal's more quietly authoritative faces, its ground-floor loggia of Corinthian columns opening directly onto the water. The interiors, conceived by Milanese designer Tiziano Vudafieri of Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, navigate the expected tension between palazzo archaeology and contemporary hospitality without flinching in either direction. Guest rooms layer white resin floors and upholstered canopy bed structures — their headboards worked in dark patterned fabric — against exposed original timber ceiling beams in the upper-floor suites, while a striped wingback chair or a shot of teal in the bathroom trim supplies the note of graphic modernity that keeps the whole from feeling like a museum. The bar is the most resolved space: cardinal-red curved banquettes running beneath double-height crimson-panelled walls, illuminated side tables casting warm pools across dark stone floors, the Gothic arched windows framing the canal at night like a Venetian painting with the lights left on. A polished steel sculpture on the loggia terrace completes the argument that this is a building comfortable enough in its own history to welcome the present in.

"This was our fifth (or sixth? not quite sure) stay at the Sina Centurion . For us, this is the perfect place to stay in Venice - away from the crowds of San Marco, but in a great central position next to the Salute on the Grand Canal, with views of San Marco and the lagoon. This time we had a lovely room with a terrace, overlooking the dome of a church alongside the hotel. Staff were as friendly and helpful as ever. We will return!"

"I first discovered this place in a semi-desperate attempt to escape the stifling overcrowded madness that is Venice in high summer. The courtyard and lobby looked peaceful and cool. My friend and I turned in and found seats on the delicious canal side terrace where the bar staff restored us with tall, cool G&Ts and delicious snacks. While I do’t think I’ll ever go back to Venice in summer, I wanted to see if it’s true what they say about its magical charms in winter. And I had such a fond memory of this hotel for reviving me that summer day that I biked in for two nights in late February. I was not disappointed. The entire staff was so lovely throughout my stay. My room on the fifth floor was very private, cozy and special. Linens were luscious. Breakfast and bar just perfect. And the adjacent vaporetto stop (La Salute) made it so easy to get everywhere in the city, even when I had reached my limit of walking and wandering. I will definitely come back in the winter."

"Close to the Guggenheim Museum is the awesome Sina Centurion Palace Hotel. Excellent service and delicious pasta and seafood with maybe a little grappa thrown in. Beautiful setting for a superb meal."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at Sina Centurion Palace. We had one room for our two adult children and another for my husband and I. The service was all around excellent. The building, obviously older and charming, was impeccably clean and modern in style and technology. My husband and I had a corner suite with a canal view on two sides, including the beautiful church off to our right. The ceiling was basically double story high, or at least 1.5 x height, and was a gorgeous antique wood design clearly from centuries ago. It was a stunning room. Our adult children's room was a bit small, but still had a view of the grand canal, which opens up a great feeling of space. The bathrooms were lovely. We arrived right at the front door of the hotel on the grand canal by water taxi. Going out the back door on foot led us to all of the alleyways and narrow streets with shops, bars and restaurants, and a major bridge that took us to a neighboring principal island. It was pretty close to the airport. Breakfast was included. We would definitely stay there again."
