PB hotel design editorial

Right where the Grand Canal widens toward the Santa Maria della Salute — Longhena's great baroque dome visible from every canal-facing window — a fifteenth-century Gothic palazzo that once served as the Venetian headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian Customs Authority now carries the Sina Centurion Palace. The building's facade, four storeys of warm Venetian brick articulated by white Istrian stone tracery in the pointed-arch Gothic manner, presents one of the canal's more quietly authoritative faces, its ground-floor loggia of Corinthian columns opening directly onto the water. The interiors, conceived by Milanese designer Tiziano Vudafieri of Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, navigate the expected tension between palazzo archaeology and contemporary hospitality without flinching in either direction. Guest rooms layer white resin floors and upholstered canopy bed structures — their headboards worked in dark patterned fabric — against exposed original timber ceiling beams in the upper-floor suites, while a striped wingback chair or a shot of teal in the bathroom trim supplies the note of graphic modernity that keeps the whole from feeling like a museum. The bar is the most resolved space: cardinal-red curved banquettes running beneath double-height crimson-panelled walls, illuminated side tables casting warm pools across dark stone floors, the Gothic arched windows framing the canal at night like a Venetian painting with the lights left on. A polished steel sculpture on the loggia terrace completes the argument that this is a building comfortable enough in its own history to welcome the present in.

"If you get a room with a view you can watch all the boats plough up and down the Grand Canal, it's wonderful. Staying in Venice means you get to see and explore Venice with no crowds in the morning and night. The room we had was excellent, we stayed here before. The hotel is in the best location. It is just a vaporetti stop away from Basilica San Marco. It in a quieter neighborhood of Venice with art stores to explore. It's a beautiful well appointed hotel. Staff was super friendly. Breakfast was included, it can be better."

"This is an elegant, beautiful property with excellent, efficient service and very personable and friendly staff. The spacious 2-story suites with floor-to-ceiling windows have nice amenities and cozy bedding. However, the configuration is a bit difficult to navigate, as the bedroom is on the top floor and the bathroom on the bottom floor. This means several trips down the stairs during the night for most people, and potentially dangerous, especially for those with mobility issues."

"We have spent three wonderful nights at this 5 star hotel. It’s situated on the grand canal with its own jetty for water taxis. We arrived by a pre booked shared water taxi which was excellent value and we felt so special to arrive at the private jetty. The staff were attentive and polite. Our room was serviced twice daily. Breakfast was excellent, again the staff were very friendly and attentive. The food choice was impressive. On checkout we were invited to pay a discretionary service charge of 100 euros for our 3 nights. We had seen complaints about this previously on trip advisor so we did expect it. We opted to pay a slightly smaller amount as we had not used the bar or restaurant and coming from the UK this is not normal to have to pay this. Getting a water taxi back to the airport proved a little challenging so we opted to take a short walk to Zaterrre to pick up the twice hourly Alilaguna airport boat at 36 euros for the two of us."
