PB hotel design editorial

Calle Barozzi, a narrow lane threading between the Grand Canal and Campo Santo Stefano in the San Marco sestiere, has the kind of address that Venetian hotels spend centuries trying to acquire. Violino d'Oro sits in a four-storey palazzo along this corridor, its cream stucco facade framed by deep green shutters and terracotta roof tiles — a building whose proportions and arched ground-floor loggia place it squarely in the palazzetto tradition of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Stone steps descend directly to a private canal mooring, and gondolas pass close enough to the entrance that arriving by water carries an almost theatrical charge. The interiors carry the atmosphere of a Venetian patrician residence assembled over generations rather than designed in a single gesture. Murano glass chandeliers hang in every room — blown in the extravagant branching style the city has produced since the Renaissance — while brass four-poster beds sit on dark-stained hardwood floors laid with Greek-key bordered rugs in deep green or warm stone. Scenic chinoiserie wallpapers, displayed as full panels behind the beds, reference Venice's historic role as conduit between European and Eastern luxury trade. The salon deploys a black marble fireplace beneath a large-format chinoiserie painting, crimson velvet sofas arranged beside cane-back armchairs in a combination that suggests the layered collecting habits of an eighteenth-century Grand Tour interior rather than any contemporary hospitality formula.

"Staying at Hotel Violino d'Oro has to be my best hotel experience EVER. Part of a small, but very luxurious group of 5, this family run Hotel was total enjoyment from the moment the door was opened for us on arrival right through to our luggage being carried for us, through the Venice streets to the water taxi, to begin our return home journey five days later. The customer facing team, led by General Manager Annabella Cariello, can never do enough for their visitors. When I say, led, I mean, of course, led by example. We even had the opportunity to chat with the owners Sara and Elena Maestrelli whose passion for providing excellence is shared by all involved in the day to day operation of the hotel. Nothing is too much trouble and customer satisfaction is just a starting place. We were made to feel incredibly special."

"My wife and I stayed at the Violino d’Oro for three nights in late February for a special birthday celebration. We had booked a junior suite but were luckily upgraded to a full suite (on the first floor, from memory it was room #2). The room had nice a separate sitting area and dual aspect views to the front (over the street outside the hotel) and to the side (over the canal). The room was surprisingly quiet and peaceful given where it was positioned in the hotel. The room itself was really nice – everything was very luxury. The Venetian style will not be to everyone’s taste but it’s very toned down and sophisticated in this hotel – some other high end hotels in the city tend towards bling. Our bed was really comfortable and we slept very soundly. Breakfast was a delight. The a la carte menu offered plenty of choices and you could be healthy or indulgent as you wished. The hotel has a lovely bar/lounge area which is very nice for pre- or after-dinner drinks. There are complimentary chocolates as well, of which we ate too many. All of the hotel staff we came into contact with were exemplary – very professional but also warm, welcoming and personable. Thank you to the breakfast team who are lovely. Thank you also to the front desk team for their helpful suggestions. And thank you to housekeeping for their immaculate work. The hotel’s location can’t be bettered. It’s only 2-3 minutes walk to St Mark’s Square, 3-4 minutes to the Alilaguna stop at St Mark’s to get to/ from the airport and 15 minutes to walk up to the Rialto Bridge. The hotel is of course expensive (in an expensive city to be fair) and not necessarily the right choice for an ordinary weekend in Venice (if such a thing is possible). But if you’re visiting Venice for a special occasion and would like to stay somewhere really exceptional, Violino d’Oro is a very good option. Highly recommended."

"We booked this hotel for our wedding anniversary. We met in Venice at the beginning of the 1970s, and we like to return for significant anniversaries. This was our first Christmas without family and we chose the hotel because of its location, ambiance and restaurant. We were not disappointed, and we had a wonderful time. Highly recommended."

"Outstanding boutique hotel. The location is second to none, a short stroll to St Marks Square and right on the street where all the high end boutiques are. The actual hotel is beautifully appointed and the rooms are spacious. We requested an upgrade upon our arrival and were very pleased with the suite we stayed in, overlooking S. Moise canal. It was large with a huge walk in robe to keep all our luggage. The staff were so friendly and professional. The breakfast was plentiful and the bar area was so lovely to spend time in either reading with a coffee or before or after dinner drinks. I can’t fault this hotel and will definitely be back. Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful stay, and probably the best hotel we stayed in over our 5 weeks in Italy 🙌🏻"
