PB hotel design editorial

Ian Fleming wrote all fourteen James Bond novels at this desk, in this cove, on this stretch of Jamaica's north coast — and the estate he built in 1946 near Oracabessa has carried that literary mythology ever since. GoldenEye, acquired by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell and transformed into a boutique resort through his Island Outpost collection, preserves the spirit of Fleming's original compound while expanding across fourteen acres of tropical gardens, lagoon, and private beach. The architecture is deliberately unheroic: low-slung timber cottages with steeply pitched shingle roofs, painted in faded Caribbean pastels — sage, dusty rose, terracotta — and half-swallowed by heliconia, banana palms, and bougainvillea. Dry-stone walls and sandy footpaths connect the villas rather than formal drives, keeping the scale firmly domestic. Inside, the rooms carry the material language of Jamaican vernacular building — tongue-and-groove white-painted boarding, exposed rafter ceilings, mahogany louvred shutters, and wide-plank hardwood floors that open onto over-water decks or sea-view verandahs furnished with wicker plantation chairs. Indigo and crimson batik-print bed runners add local textile warmth against the white linen. The beach bar is something else entirely: a turquoise rendered counter beneath a canopy of bleached driftwood branches, its walls papered floor to ceiling in jazz album covers — a Blackwell signature that grounds the whole property in music culture as much as architectural tradition.

"Truly a magical trip! Cannot say enough great things about the pristine property and the staff that makes you feel like family. Pro-tips: swimming in the Lagoon is a must and be sure to request Laurel Blair as your driver. Laurel is one in a million and absolutely made the trip! Knows exactly where to take you (not just tourist spots) and gives you her view of the country, culture and people she’s so proud of. She makes you feel like you’ve known her your whole life, and she’s funny as all get out!!!"

"Our room was beautiful. Very, very clean and comfortable. Small maintenance issue of dishwasher stuck closed. Food was good at restaurant although pacing could have been faster with small children. Outdoor shower was awesome. We liked the beaches. Tried to take out the sailboat from day 1 of my stay, but the watersports people couldn’t arrange or accommodate for some reason although I asked several times. This was disappointing for me as I would have loved to go out. We enjoyed the “pop up” gym. It’s true you have to use WhatsApp to communicate with the hotel concierge which works for some things but not others. Overall, I would recommend this place and probably return."

"This place runs almost entirely on atmosphere and vibe. We stayed just before Christmas and saw only a handful of other guests, which will feel magical to some and unsettling to others. Service is entirely hands-off and runs through WhatsApp. If you want a spa appointment, you message one number. Room service, another. It ultimately feels less like a hotel and more like a chic, remote Airbnb with a helpful host and turn down service. The property itself is beautiful. It sits on extraordinary land with small coves and tiny private beaches. The cottages have a weathered Caribbean charm, though in places that charm feels like it’s edging into tired. Pool and beach furniture are worn, and some areas feel like they could benefit from simple upkeep. The biggest disappointment by far was the food. You are very remote and completely dependent on the on-site restaurants, yet one of the two restaurants was closed the entire time we were there, with no advance notice during prime peak season. That meant limited options every day. Some meals were quite tasty, while other were minimal and uninspiring and extraordinarily expensive relative to its quality. Think iceberg lettuce straight from a bag with little love or fan fair. Dietary accommodations were minimal, especially for the price. Everyone we encountered was genuinely kind, and the spa deserves special mention. I had an incredible massage there that rivaled any five-star resort I’ve stayed. The issue is not warmth or capability, but the overall hands-off approach to service across the property. If privacy, quiet, and natural beauty are your top priorities, GoldenEye may feel magical. That said, at ~ $1,100 a night, the experience feels overvalued. If this were priced significantly lower, it would read as an incredible hidden gem. At its current rate, you are paying almost entirely for the setting, not for service, food, or any personal touches."
