PB hotel design editorial

Perched across the uppermost nine floors of Fukuoka Daimyo Garden City's 25-storey glass tower — the tallest structure in the city's core commercial district — The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka brings together a Tokyo structural practice and a Melbourne design studio to produce something that feels unexpectedly local. Kume Sekkei's tower presents as a layered glass mass, its upper hotel volume set distinctly above the building's midsection like a lantern lifted over the city, catching the pink-and-indigo dusk over the Chikuzen mountains in the west and Hakata Bay to the east. The interiors, delivered by Layan Architects + Designers, draw from Hakata-ori, the region's centuries-old yarn-dyed silk weaving tradition, threading that reference through lighting profiles, floor textures, and bespoke artworks across the 167 guestrooms and suites spread between floors 19 and 23. The rooms themselves are studies in warm restraint — pale ash timber, fluted panels in cool grey-blue, and brass detailing at the window reveals — with panoramic glazing that frames either the mountain ridgeline or the working port below. The pool deck is where the building declares itself most fully: green-tiled water mirrors white marble cladding beneath a ribbed timber ceiling, with the full Fukuoka skyline held in the reflection. The top-floor bar, draped in pendant lights shaped like slender bronze droplets, treats the bay view as its back bar. Melbourne's design eye and Tokyo's structural precision have, together, made something that belongs entirely to Fukuoka.

"Upon arrival, staff are all very polite and welcoming. Basement lift takes you up to their reception. As it was quite busy when we arrive, the person who usher us to the lift was dramatic, only 1 set of customer per lift and they do not allow others to go in together. Is unnecessary and wasting a lot of time. Then when we reach the reception, we were told to wait on the sofa seats. After waiting for more than 10min. , someone finally came and told us we have lounge access, so we should proceed to the lounge. I was getting fed up, and said no, we check in here now please. Whole check in process took about 25min. Japanese are very efficient in some things, but their "process" has so many red tapes and employ too many redundant people. Room was rather small considering is a club room king and said 50sqm? Love the shower area, very nice tiles and easy to use. Toiletries use are very nice - love it! What stands out is their lounge. Is very well thought out. Layout was good. Alcohol serve all day! And the alcohol selection are good quality. Their breakfast was good enough, then they serve lunch 1130-130pm! Then tea sets 230-430. Then happy hour food 530-8pm. You can basically eat around the clock in the lounge. Their gym is basic, all modern equipment and 24hrs. Very glad as this gym needs a fee to enter unless you've club access, there was hardly anyone when I was using. Similarly for the indoor swimming pool ~ 22m as the width is rather small, it was empty when I use it at 6:30am Love it! This place doesn't have onsen but small sauna and steam room which is very clean and nice. Location is very good. You're literally at the center of action. If you've only 2 days in Fukuoka, this could be the place for you!"

"We rated the room and the Spa 5/5, and the rest 3/5. We stayed at the Deluxe Suite for 4 nights in total, 2 nights before our 7 Stars train journey and 2 nights after. The room was very comfortable and beautifully designed. We especially love the panoramic view of the city from the bathroom. Our room included access to the Club Lounge which offered several food presentations. Food was displayed nicely and good in quality. We dined at Viridis and we tried their newly introduced signature tasting menu. We also visited Genjyu for a sushi counter dinner. Both experiences were enjoyable but the food was not particularly memorable. On the other hand, we recommend a visit to the Spa. The Botanical Revive treatment we tried was excellent and it was the perfect way to relax after our morning excursion. When we visited the other RC properties, we were escorted to the Club for check in, while a welcome drink was offered at the lounge. When we arrived at this hotel, we were asked for our names at the entrance. However, once we reached the lobby, they performed our check in at the front desk. It was definitely not the normal standards for Club guests at RC. After our train journey, we were asked for our names again at arrival and were directed to the front desk once more. We explained that we had Club access, and the staff member then guided us to the Club floor. We do not understand the purpose of collecting our names at the entrance if the lobby staff do not recognise the booking details and are not ready to welcome us. When we arrived at the Club, we were handed over to another staff member. Instead of showing us inside the lounge and offering us a drink, she asked us to sit and proceed with the check in. It took longer than it should for her to locate our booking. Her English was not strong and she was struggling to deliver the basic information. We could tell she was quite nervous while speaking English. It was a poor check in experience like the first time. The staff we met were friendly and courteous, and we truly appreciate their eagerness to assist and their attention. However, for some staff, the level of English was not sufficient, and this frequently led to miscommunication which was quite frustrating. This happened several times with different staff members during our stay and it negatively affected our overall impression of this hotel."

"Checking into The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka felt like stepping into a pinnacle of modern Japanese luxury. This sophisticated tower, perched in the Daimyo Garden City complex, immediately impresses with its high-tech polish and understated elegance, offering a serene escape amid the city's energy. As one of the newest and most acclaimed ultra-luxury options in Fukuoka, it lives up to expectations for discerning travelers seeking the absolute best. Location Situated at 2-6-50 Daimyo, Chuo Ward, the hotel occupies a prime downtown spot just a short 5-minute walk from Tenjin and Akasaka Stations. This central position grants effortless walkability to Tenjin's shopping streets, department stores, underground malls, and nearby attractions like Ohori Park (about 15 minutes on foot). The surrounding area feels vibrant yet composed, with strong lighting and a secure atmosphere typical of Fukuoka's well-patrolled urban core. Room Opting for a bay-view room proved an excellent decision—the expansive windows framed mesmerizing scenes of Hakata Bay, passing ships, and the sparkling city skyline, especially captivating at sunrise or sunset. The design marries contemporary minimalism with subtle Japanese elements: natural woods, thoughtful lighting, and generous space (starting around 50 square meters) create a refined, calming environment. Everything from the bedding to the curated amenities felt meticulously executed for comfort and sophistication. Wellness The highlight was undoubtedly the heated indoor pool on the upper floors, where panoramic views across Hakata Bay deliver an extraordinary sense of serenity high above the city. Swimming here felt like floating in a private oasis, with the vista transforming the experience into something truly restorative. The adjoining spa, sauna, and well-equipped fitness center rounded out a comprehensive wellness offering, all maintained to impeccable standards. Service Service embodied Ritz-Carlton’s signature precision and warmth—attentive, proactive, and flawlessly executed from the moment of arrival. Staff anticipated needs with genuine care, reinforcing why this property stands as Fukuoka's ultra-luxury benchmark. Verdict The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka masterfully combines breathtaking hardware, panoramic serenity, and flawless hospitality into an unforgettable stay. For anyone seeking the pinnacle of luxury in the city—particularly with a bay-view room to capture those stunning vistas—this is unequivocally the top choice. We would return without hesitation for its beauty, tranquility, and uncompromising excellence."

"We basically travelled to Fukuoka just to experience this Ritz-Carlton. Being such a new hotel, the suite appointments are impeccable, the food is amazing, and the facilities are fantastic. With all that said, I thought the ladies and gentlemen at this particular Ritz-Carlton stands above all. They were attentive and friendly at all time, Vincent was friendly and provided great local recommendations to us. He gave us a beautiful kimono Ritz lion as a keepsake and it is truly appreciated. There was a small hiccup during our stay which truthfully I thought it is very difficult to avoid given the nature of the incident. However, the Ritz team addressed the situation swiftly and made us felt so special. My wife fell ill during the stay and they made arrangements that truly made us felt they really cared for our wellbeing. This is a hotel that I will certainly be back, and made us understood why the nane Ritz-Carlton has such command in the industry."
