Kengo Kuma & Associates built Capella Kyoto on the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School in the historic Miyagawa-chō geisha district, and the building carries that civic weight carefully. Completed in 2026, the four-storey, 89-room structure draws its formal logic from the traditional machiya townhouse: dark timber latticework screens the street-level facade in densely spaced vertical fins, wide overhanging eaves articulate each floor in the manner of stacked residential layers, and a karahafu-style undulating roofline at the entrance pavilion — visible in the night images as a sinuous bamboo-woven arch glowing over a still garden pond — translates a classically ceremonial Japanese form into something unexpectedly sculptural. The massing is contemporary in its precision yet unmistakably rooted in Kyoto's low-slung timber streetscape. Singapore-based Brewin Design Office carried the machiya's deep, staggered spatial logic into every room, grounding the interiors in tatami-grid floors, warm walnut wall panelling, and washi-paper headboards backlit to cast a soft luminescence across beds set low on pale timber platforms. Shoji screens divide spaces with the same rhythm the building's exterior lattices use on the facade. The bar steps outside this quiet world entirely: a dark granite counter, clusters of schoolhouse pendant lights in milk glass, and spindle-back stools in bronzed steel give it the atmosphere of a well-worn Tokyo basement cocktail room, a deliberate counterpoint to the hushed rooms above. The effect is a hotel that holds two distinct moods without either undermining the other.
