PB hotel design editorial

For over three centuries, the land on which Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto now stands belonged to the Mitsui clan — one of Japan's most powerful merchant dynasties — whose historic residence gate, complete with its sweeping irimoya roof and hand-fired clay tiles, was preserved and repositioned as the hotel's entrance when the property opened in 2020. That gate frames the transition from the streets of Nakagyo-ku into a contemporary structure designed by Nikken Sekkei, the five-storey building clad in layered stone banding that echoes the coursed masonry of nearby Nijo Castle without resorting to pastiche. Inside, the interiors by Hirsch Bedner Associates work with a restrained material vocabulary — hinoki cypress ceilings, tatami-edged platform beds, washi-panelled headboards, and lacquered timber joinery — that shifts register between the 161 rooms depending on category. Standard rooms carry bleached oak floors and pale onyx headwall panels veined in grey-white; the machiya-style suites give onto private stone-walled courtyards with open-air soaking tubs, shoji screens sliding back to collapse the boundary between inside and garden. The lobby, anchored by a living bonsai composition set in a ribbed stone plinth, draws the courtyard in through full-height glazing, a cedar-slatted ceiling overhead casting the kind of warm, directed shadow more familiar from a Kyoto teahouse than an international hotel. The restaurant ceiling — a structural lattice of pale timber with pendant lanterns descending through it — sustains that craft intelligence all the way to the table.

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa Reviews

"HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO is exactly what a luxury hotel in Kyoto should be — classically beautiful, rooted in traditional Japanese design, and defined by an atmosphere of simplicity, grace, and elegance. The concierge and management team came through for us, and while there was a small hiccup along the way, they handled it professionally, earnestly, and with the kind of effort that reflects a genuine commitment to their five-star reputation. That recovery matters as much as getting it right the first time. One recommendation: if you are on the fence, feel free to skip the private onsen and instead invest your time in the other aspects of the spa, including the public onsen (which you still need to reserve). Kudos to a kid from Queens who was our server and studying to be a sommelier— Luka. He will go far in the hospitals business for sure. The location in Kyoto is outstanding — perfectly situated to experience everything the city has to offer. We will absolutely be back."

"I stayed at this beautiful property in November for 3 nights. It's in an excellent location, right next to Nijo Castle which is central Kyoto. The rooms were quite spacious and well designed. Food was good and service was excellent, as expected throughout Japan. The concierge helped me book a couple of tickets to the Kyoto botanical garden light show and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The wow factors of the property are the garden and the onsen. The garden was well manicured and maintained. It was nice to walk through it during the mornings and evenings. The onsen was a must visit every evening especially after spending the entire day walking around Kyoto. Although I will say, I preferred the onsen at the Ritz Nikko much more. The water here wasn't as hot and because it's located underground, there was no fresh air coming in so it was a bit stuffy. I also booked a massage at the spa and it was just ok. Not saying it was bad, but i just wouldn't spend the money to book another session if I was to return."

"not a minority friendly hotel, if you have any melanin in your skin I suggest you book another hotel. I was treated like a third class citizen, completely ignored at times. staff was rude to me on multiple occasions and every time i would come into the hotel after sight seeing i was asked if i was lost or looking for a hotel guest. mind you i booked and fully paid for 3 rooms."
