PB hotel design editorial

Rinpa painting was born in Kyoto's Takagamine district four centuries ago, when artisans gathered at the foot of these same mountains to develop one of Japan's most celebrated decorative traditions. ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts draws on that lineage directly: BLINK Design Group's Rie Minoura wove lacquerware, karakami decorative paper, and hand-thrown ceramics through the interiors of this 114-room property, opened in September 2021 within the 28-acre grounds of Shozan Resort Kyoto. Tokyu Architects & Engineers shaped the four-story structure in dark-framed concrete and glass, its massing sitting low against the tree line, while Ten Landscape Associates designed the central reflecting court — a shallow granite water plane with moss-ringed island plantings — that orients the entire arrival sequence toward stillness before guests reach a door. Inside, the craft references hold without becoming costume. Guest rooms show two moods: one registers in pale ash floors, woven textile headwalls, and private garden terraces; the other rises to coffered timber ceilings and deep blue mosaic feature walls, with window seats framing the forested hillside beyond. The all-day restaurant, housed in a low pavilion beneath a vaulted hinoki ceiling, pairs chartreuse banquette seating with floor-to-ceiling glazing on both flanks, the tree canopy pressing close on every side. The outdoor pool, lined in turquoise glazed tile and punctuated by planted platforms, completes a property that treats the surrounding forest less as backdrop than as the central material of the design.
