PB hotel design editorial

Along the Oi River in Arashiyama, where thatched pavilions and clipped pine gardens have lined the western bank since the Heian period, a former imperial villa site became the foundation for Suiran Kyoto when the Starwood Luxury Collection property opened in 2015. The hotel's 39 rooms are distributed across low-rise structures that step up through the forested hillside, and the exterior view across the water — tiled rooflines dissolving into autumn maples and cedar-wrapped slopes — makes the compound feel continuous with the landscape rather than imposed upon it. A fleet of traditional wooden boats moored at the riverbank completes the picture. The architectural strategy throughout involves two registers held in careful tension: the preserved Meiji-era machiya structures, with their exposed keyaki timber frames, shoji screens, and woven thatched ceilings visible in the dining pavilions, sit alongside contemporary guest accommodation finished in warm walnut flooring, gold-leaf wall panels, and dark lacquered millwork. The restaurant spaces, where sliding glass walls retract fully to merge interior and garden, use the traditional structural vocabulary — bracketed beams, ranma transom screens, polished black stone floors — as the primary material language. Guest rooms take a quieter approach, pairing clean-lined furniture with private garden terraces or full-width windows framing the surrounding cedars and maples, so that each room's view functions as its defining decorative element.

"This an unique Japanese luxury hotel with tremendous views of the river and backdrop of the Arashiyama mountains. Every feature, flowering bush, placement of chairs, bedrooms.has been carefully done to convey beauty while maintaining western comforts. The staff is incredibly gracious and staying there feels like a welcome to a private home. The hotel is tucked at the end of the lane on the river, so very peaceful and beautiful views from every room. The food is excellent and plentiful, whether you choose Japanese or Western style-- even have latte machine! They have a wine/ cocktail hour for guests each day at 5 p.m in a villa perched over the river. The rooms are very comfortable and the service is impeccable. Both my husband and I had to get on business calls during NYC daytime/middle of the night and the hotel assisted in finding us a quiet room without interruptions. The staff are genuinely caring and gracious beyond words."

"Fabulous location in the Arashiyama area. Easy walk to Tenryu-ji Temple, Monkey park, River boats, Bamboo Forest and lively shopping area. Sitting directly on the river the hotel offered a nightly Happy Hour with veranda seating that included drinks and snacks that we thoroughly enjoyed. Very peaceful and relaxing in an area that is quite busy during the day. The outdoor gardens/area is very serene and beautiful. Food: A western or eastern breakfast was offered each morning and again of high quality that started our day off right. Rooms: The rooms were a good size and though maybe not amazing at first glance, were very comfortable. We did enjoy the showers water pressure, welcomed after a busy day of sightseeing. The hotel does a pick-up service from Kyoto Station which was another great amenity. This hotel was a splurge that we felt was well worth it!"

"Extremely poor service of the guests. They were not at all accommodating when asked for help. To do a small bag of laundry they wanted about $100 usd. $50 usd to use the onsen , $60 usd for breakfast, etc."

"Suiran is a comfortable resort like hotel in the pristine Arashiyama neighborhood of Kyoto. The Hozugawa riverfront, old bridge and mountains around Suiran provide an exclusive atmosphere while the traditional layout & architecture of the property ensure that guests feel a sense of exclusivity away from the crowds of Kyoto. There are plenty of top attractions within a short walking distance while the other Kyoto attractions are easily accessible by cab. Breakfast is wonderful in a scenic restaurant overlooking a Japanese garden while the Hassui cafe is the perfect place to unwind & chill. Their sweet potato dessert (a local dish) was terrific, cocktail hours were great too! Overall, this hotel lives upto the name & has many plus points over the other top hotels in Kyoto."

"It's a luxury hotel at a magnificent location. Parking available just in front of the hotel. Walking distance to nearby tourist shopping streets. A quiet environment in it which you can say it's romantic. But set up inside room is quite old."
