PB hotel design editorial

From the aerial view, the geometry is immediately legible: fifty-five low-slung villas tracing a coral peninsula into the improbable turquoise of Miyakojima's waters, each flat-roofed structure so close to the shoreline that the boundary between architecture and reef feels genuinely negotiable. This is Rosewood Miyakojima, Rosewood's first address in Japan, which arrived in March 2025 under the complete authorship of Amsterdam-based Studio Piet Boon — responsible for both the architecture and every interior detail. Piet Boon's practice grounded the project in indigenous Ryukyu limestone and wabi-sabi restraint, and the palette holds that discipline throughout: raw concrete, warm sand-toned plaster, seagrass flooring, and linen-wrapped headboards in tall caramel frames that feel simultaneously Japanese and quietly Northern European. Inside the villas, the rooms are calibrated toward stillness. Built-in joinery in pale ash provides shallow display shelving for ceramics and books; sage-upholstered ottomans introduce the only chromatic surprise in an otherwise tonal composition of wheat, cream, and warm stone. The restaurant dissolves its boundary wall with folding steel-framed glass, placing a crescent bronze sculpture between dining banquettes and the East China Sea. At the pool terrace, travertine-toned decking meets infinity water that mirrors the reef beyond. Developed by Mitsubishi Estate, the resort carries the careful restraint of a project built with long horizons in mind — a place that looks as though it grew from the limestone rather than was placed upon it.

"This is my seventh Rosewood property and it might be my favorite! (SBH is also highly recommended!) There are so many wonderful things to say about this resort, but I would say the beauty of the property including the stunning reef right off shore, the fresh sushi and service at Choma and the amazing spa were highlights! Specifically, my masseuse Ms. Kin Zing was the best masseuse I have ever had. I really enjoyed using the sauna and spa facilities daily. You can use them even without a treatment so some days I would pop by the sauna for 20 minutes. The treatments were outstanding and the tea service after each appointment was very special. I ended up locating the special Okinawa tea they offered and bringing some home. We had such a wonderful experience dining at Choma, the sushi restaurant, that we elected to dine there every evening. The service was exceptional. Every night they welcomed us to our favorite table and had our drinks and dinner ready without even asking. It was Rosewood service at its finest. Miko who manages the restaurant does a stellar job. And our server Shun was top-notch. Albara was also very attentive. Everyone should learn from Miko because she runs Choma like a Rosewood restaurant should be run. The food offered for the daily complimentary breakfast was also very good. I was a little disappointed in the limited pool menu and service, but this is still a relatively new Rosewood, and I imagine they will improve after receiving feedback. The property itself is stunning. Upon arrival you are able to look out over the entire property and see the gorgeous ocean view. We stayed in a beachfront king and were very pleased with our choice. It was short walk back and forth to the pool and the beach. Our patio and plunge pool had privacy behind the shrubbery. The ocean view rooms appeared to have excellent views over the ocean, but their balconies lacked privacy. However, I think this would be a small trade off for the view. The rooms overlooking the back beach may have more privacy as no one swims at the back beach. If we go back, I will request our same room, 65. A lot of rooms in Japan have twin beds so be sure to request a king room if this is your preference. The rooms are quite large and the bathrooms are spacious as well. This is a very quiet and peaceful property, which we adored. The rooms are tastefully spread out and the property is quite large. The pool area was classic Rosewood and happily not crowded. (It captured the serenity of Las Ventanas without the crowds.) We spent part of each day in a gorgeous and extremely comfortable sun bed adjacent to the pool overlooking the ocean. This was a perfect place to watch the sunset. There was always plenty of room at the pool. There are no chairs on the beach and they weren’t necessary because the pool chairs are directly over the beach. We swam and snorkeled daily in the gorgeous clear water and had the ocean to ourselves. This may be because we brought our own snorkels as the Rosewood currently doesn’t not offer them. We are avid snorkelers and divers and found the offshore reef to be spectacular. It was easily the healthiest and lushest house reef we have experienced. The hotel arranged a dive for my fiancé and he really enjoyed it. One day we drove a short distance to a nearby beach to swim with turtles, and the staff prepared water and towels for us. I highly recommend this. In sum, I cannot say enough good things about this resort. After traveling through Japan for 2 weeks this was by far the relaxation and rejuvenation we needed. I highly recommend anyone visiting Japan who has the ability to add this destination to their itinerary do so. It was a quick easy flight from Osaka and then back to Tokyo. And just a short drive from the airport. If this resort were closer to home, I would visit it frequently. Even if you do not visit mainland Japan, I would recommend this as a destination visit. It is truly outstanding! We will cherish this spectacular trip and are so appreciative of the amazing service!"

"What should have been a quick and easy request turned into a multi-day follow-up. The multiple times I contacted them, the response felt cold and indifferent—more like I was bothering them than helping them. Instead of a sense of responsibility, I received curt replies, a "that's their policy" tone, and repeated refusals unless I agreed to an additional fee. The attitude wasn't just slow; it felt disinterested and a little condescending, as if the issue was my problem to handle. The biggest disappointment was the inconsistency: a small issue took a disproportionate amount of time and energy, and after all the back and forth, the request was ultimately denied. For a hotel that charges premium rates, I expect professionalism, empathy, and solutions—not reluctance and additional conditions. I won't return unless the service culture improves."
