PB hotel design editorial

Completed just weeks before this writing, on a 50,000 square metre site at 800 metres above sea level on the forested slopes of Subashiri, Gōra Kadan Fuji is the boldest extension yet of the Gōra Kadan brand — a contemporary ryokan of 39 suites and 3 standalone villas designed by Ikuo Ogitsu of Ogitsu Architects Studio, with Aoyama Nomura Design (A.N.D.) shaping the library lounge, spa, and restaurant interiors. The massing draws from traditional Japanese residential architecture: deep-pitched tile roofs, exposed timber columns, bamboo screen fencing, and a forecourt of raked stone that frames Mount Fuji's cone with the clarity of a composed ink painting. A signature colonnade corridor running roughly 120 metres through the property pays quiet homage to the original Gōra Kadan in Hakone, translating that property's meditative procession into a landscape where the mountain itself is the destination. Inside, the material palette is specific and serious: Jindai-sugi ancient cedar lines ceilings and structural elements, juraku mud-plaster covers walls in warm earth tones, and Mount Fuji lava stone grounds the spa. Guest suites shift between bed and tatami zones, shoji screens diffusing the forest light before opening onto timber-decked balconies. The pool room, tiled in near-black, holds its surface perfectly still against floor-to-ceiling glass facing the treeline. The dining space pairs woven ceiling panels and washi-lantern pendants above dark oak tables — craft-forward without announcement, which is the discipline the whole building maintains.

Gora Kadan Fuji Reviews

"Beautiful hotel new and modern with spectacular view of Mt Fuji Pro: very large and well appointed rooms with direct view of mt Fuji. Hardworking staff. Good gym. Spa supposedly great. Great thermal spring in room. Con: when we arrived at 230 they said our dinner would be served in a conference room because of party size (6). We said we could split party and even times but still no. After digging in we finally got a nice space in the confines of the restaurant. All meals are quite good but the meals are rushed. They could have done that right away. No spa appointments available. It’s like too many rooms and not enough basic amenities available. No blackout shades so need sleep mask. Vibe: by far the most “Japanese “ place we stayed during a 2 week trip. We got a great view of Mt Fuji at 430 am so effort and expense of trip was justified."

"The hotel is located in a area where you have a lot of nature around, which is nice. From the hotel you have stunning views of the Fuji, really excellent views. There are some nice hiking trails in the area. The hotel is newly built and very modern, however made in a traditional style. Nice lobby and bar. Also the restaurants are nicely decorated. The rooms are excellent, large, with separate living and bedroom, with lot of amenities. All in Japanese style, very nice. One of the best rooms I have seen. And also from the room you have great views of Fuji. Great spa and pool, combining the Japanese tradition with modern twist. Unfortunately the food is not very good. Breakfast was very disappointing, all dishes were not good. There was also no choice, you just get a numbered plates, which cannot be adapted. The same goes with the Kaiseki dinner, all dishes are not really good. The only good dinner option is the sushi restaurant where they serve very good sushi. Service is not on the level you would expect from a Relais&Chateau. You constantly need to ask for things, they never proactively approach you. I wanted to get some information about things to do, but they were not able to deliver any information so I had to check and organize all on my own. Also when you want something different from their menu. It is very hard, they follow procedure but are not flexible. They definitely need to improve their service. It is a pity as all staff members are very friendly, but need some more training. One positive aspect of the service is their shuttle service to the town and lake close by. Overall a nice experience, I hope they can improve the food and service."

"Gora Kadan in Fuji offers truly breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji. We stayed in one of the private villa suites, which featured exceptional amenities, including a private dry sauna, an indoor hot spring bathtub upstairs, and an additional outdoor onsen. Our family regularly stays at five-star hotels and resorts around the world, and this property easily ranks among the very best. The food, service, room amenities, privacy, and views were all absolutely top-notch. Everything about our stay exceeded expectations, and we will definitely return on our next visit to the Mt. Fuji area."
