PB hotel design editorial

Hisaya Odori Park, the long green spine running through central Nagoya that was reimagined as part of a major urban renewal project completed around 2020, gave this address its defining context — a tower rising above a mixed-use podium where the canopy of mature zelkova trees meets floor-to-ceiling glass. TIAD Autograph Collection, part of Marriott's design-forward collection, sits within this seventeen-floor structure and treats the park not as backdrop but as active material, drawing the green line of the boulevard deep into its interiors through generous glazing at every level. The rooms carry warm oak panelling to the headboard wall, terracotta-upholstered sofas positioned at plant-filled window bays, and woven pendant lamps whose cylindrical mesh silhouette references traditional Japanese craft without announcing it. The pool level makes the most deliberate architectural gesture in the building: a coffered timber ceiling constructed in a diamond lattice pattern — clearly drawing from kumiko joinery traditions — floats above a lap pool tiled in deep cobalt, the whole composition suspended between limestone deck and a full-height glazed wall facing the city. The lounge works in a warmer register, its curved slatted-timber armchairs grouped around a central ikebana-style sculptural installation, travertine wall cladding grounding a ceiling finished in layered cherry-toned timber panels. The effect throughout is a Japanese sensibility expressed through material precision rather than decorative shorthand.

"I booked a Deluxe Twin room as a Titanium member. On check in staff consulted with me if I’d prefer a room with one bed and I was moved to a King Premier Corner Park View room. I appreciate that they consulted with me for my preference. The lobby is located on the 5th floor of the building. If you’re curious, TIAD stands for Tomorrow is Another Day. The room was clean, nice, and very spacious, especially by Japanese standards. Floor-to-ceiling windows provided a great view of the northeastern city area and the nearby park. The hotel is located east of the subway Yaba-cho Station which is east of Nagoya Station. Navigating the subway in Nagoya with luggage can be a bit of a challenge with finding the elevators. The hotel is walking distance from the Osu shopping area and there’s plenty to do. I had breakfast at the hotel restaurant on the 5th floor, Table For Tomorrow. There was a pretty good selection of Japanese breakfast items as well as western savory and sweet dishes. I thought it met the standard for this brand level. Overall I had a really nice stay. This is definitely one of the nicer accommodations in Nagoya. Hopefully the opportunity to stay again comes someday."

"We were a family of 17. They put us all in the same floor which was convenient. All our requests were attended to and the Concierge facilitated our transfers to and from the airport and dinner reservations, both in and outside the hotel. The hotel was very clean and in a good location."

"It took us two train transfers from Nagoya Station to Sakae, followed by Sakae to Yabacho. The location is situated next to Exit 1 of Yabacho station (stairs only). To reach the hotel, you can take an elevator from Matsuzakaya departmental store to the ground floor and cross the road to the hotel. As my son is a Pokemon fanatic, the main reason we chose this hotel is the proximity to the Pokemon Centre (located at Parco) which is across the hotel. Not forgetting the annual Christmas Market is just situated 2 mins walk from the hotel. The room is huge, so much bigger than most in Japan, and it's new and clean. We had an issue with the air-con initially but note that it will take quite a long time to cool down the room. Every control is touch screen and it's nice that they have different mode settings for the room. The soft door closure, the heated bathroom floor and the sink area really add to the overall comfort. Staff and guard are stationed at the ground floor at night and this enhances the hotel security. Overall we had a great stay and will stay here again if we come back to Nagoya."

"All shine and sheen and no substance. This hotel is kind of a nightmare because of the excessive amount of automation. When my partner got up in the middle of the night, every light in the room turned on and all the curtains opened. And it happened every time he got up. This is like something out of Smart House (yes, the Disney channel movie). They did fix this the next day but nobody wants that after a long day of traveling plus the bed was not really comfy, so it was a sleepless night. This hotel won a Michelin for design and I do question that decision. It is near the train, but you most likely have to transfer from the main line, so it’s not that convenient. I’ve also sent postcards from many hotels in different countries and only two hotels have ever refused to help me send them out, including this one. It’s a shame considering how ubiquitous Japan Post mailboxes are and how often times, when you’re checking out, you’re in a tight time schedule to catch a flight, so this seems like it should be a standard service. How can a luxury hotel not be able to do this but a normal one can? Would not stay here again."

"We stayed two night here and were suitably impressed by the helpful and polite staff, good sized rooms and wonderful breakfast. This was our Second visit to Nagoya and first time staying at TIAD, Autograph Collection. We arrived by taxi, which dropped us along the main road, instead of driving into the lane and into the hotel lobby. We wheeled our luggage in and declined the bell hop service. Check in on the 5th floor was quick and breezy, and yet polite. We carded our way in the lift one floor up and into our room. Our room was next to the spa/pool/wellness/gym area. In fact there was a side door that led directly to the gym, three step away from our room. Our room was large and spacious by Japanese standards. We had two super single beds with a 5 inch gap between them. Bed was comfortable and the comforter was thick and heavy. At the end of the bed were two benches facing the TV. The TV has local TV stations and some English stations. There’s also a long padded bench sofa next to the window that you can unwind on. Outside the window are green plants. Room has a his/her cupboard. There’s an ironing board and iron in one, plus slippers and laundry service bag in another. Plenty of wooden hangers in the cupboard. The bathroom is a single sink affair. Amenities in the wooden box on the counter area. The drawer holds a hair dryer. The shower and bath tub area is spacious. Shampoo, conditioner and shower gel is provided. Sink plug did not work. So I had to wash my gym clothes in the bath tub.:( The sink and shower flooring is heated. The gym is good sized with some weights machines, free weights rack and Kettle Bells, mats, balls, for training. Plenty of treadmills, bikes, and elliptical ski machines, but no rowing. We had breakfast at the Hotel. Come around 0800hrs if you want a quick brekkie without having to wait too long for your special order of eggs. Around 0900hrs, they get really busy. Food is good and plentiful. There’s Japanese breakfast options too. Staff are polite and very efficient. There’s plenty to see and do in the area. The hotel is situated across the park from Sogo and other department stores. There’s lots of shops for thrifting and finding food. There is also a Coin laundry 500m behind hotel. There’s a Family Mart around the corner, and the entrance To the train station it’s right outside the Hotel. A nice modern hotel to stay when in town. Will definitely be back!"
