PB hotel design editorial

At 1,269 metres above sea level, on the wooded shores of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko National Park, the setting alone would be enough — but The Ritz-Carlton Nikko earns its position by treating the landscape as the primary material. The four-storey building, opened in 2020, presents a dark-framed grid of full-height glazing to a manicured lawn framed by mature Japanese maples, the warm amber glow of its interiors visible at dusk like a lantern set among the trees. The architecture, designed by Nikken Sekkei, keeps its profile low and horizontal, a broad overhanging roofline capping the facade in a gesture borrowed from traditional Japanese post-and-beam construction without resorting to pastiche. Fifty-nine rooms and suites occupy the building, each oriented toward either the lake or the forest canopy. Inside, the material logic is consistent and carefully graded. Guest rooms are lined in pale hinoki cypress — the ceiling planks running in tight parallel bands, wall panels carrying a shallow geometric relief — with oak flooring and pendant lamps in smoked glass providing the only contrast. The onsen pool extends beneath a broad timber soffit toward a rock garden of rough-hewn boulders and fine grey gravel, the boundary between architecture and landscape deliberately dissolved. The restaurant shifts register, introducing walnut drum pendants with botanical-illustrated interiors, red leather seating, and tufted banquettes alongside steel-framed curtain walls overlooking the forest canopy — warmth and pattern entering where the guest rooms offer restraint.

"Honestly, it started a bit rough. We had a not great experience calling ahead to book a rezzie because we were arriving very late, but upon arrival we had such an amazing time. First off, the hotel helped us secure a taxi when arrived to a completely dead Nikko town with no taxis available. The service from there was just so excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful. The onsen is great, and we did the private onsen as well. The massage was amazing. The room was really perfect, with a balcony and a sitting area. All in all, it was a pricey stay, but we felt they really tried to create a perfect stay for us. Pros - - Food was exceptional, even room service was really, really good - Staff was super helpful and very polite - The location was beautiful Oku-Nikko is a small town up the mountain, but Nikko is only about 30 minutes away (crazy pretty drive up and down the mountain too) - The spa and onsen were beautiful, and the treatments were very well done - Rooms are spacious, beds are very comfy, and the shower/bath was huge - They offered a free shuttle down to the town (although kinda rigid about booking ahead) Cons - - Really not much to nitpick, but the service at the bar from the older gentleman wasn't great, odd to have a completely empty drink and have to ask pointedly for another at that kind of hotel, and he was serving other patrons more attentively. We got the sense he may have an issue with foreigners? The younger bartender was better, but often running around, so hard to nail down. - I did feel that they could increase the shuttle service (maybe add one or two more trips per day) and perhaps lighten up the rigidity of the booking process, etc. - I felt they could do more in terms of food available during the day/afternoon. The 'library cafe' was actually out of everything, and the only place open for a course meal was the Japanese restaurant, so we had to opt for room service. It would help if they let guests know they can also order food at the bar, which we didn't know until we went there at night. Overall, this was a great stay for us, and I would say it was worth the price per night. The staff really tried to create a fun experience for us."

"It’s Ritz, so the faculties are perfect as usual. What I really what to complement is the service that Navesh provided. Really make me feel ease at home while providing excellent and professional services"

"This was simply one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in, modern Japanese luxury with delightful and unexpected touches. The hotel nestles beside Lake Chuzenji and doesn't dominate the landscape. I was there in autumn, and the autumn colours were glorious. My room was very elegant and supremely comfortable. The food was wonderful in both restaurants. I was impressed with the staff, every single one of them acknowledged my presence with a smile, and they all seemed genuinely happy to be of service. I had most contact with the staff in the Japanese restaurant, and by the end of my four-night stay I felt that Galih and Naresh had become friends. I was reluctant to leave."
