PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a volcanic headland in Onna Village along Okinawa's Onna Coast, where black lava rock drops directly into water the color of shallow Caribbean reef, the property that became Halekulani Okinawa carried an unusual burden from the outset: translating a century-old Honolulu institution — one of Hawaii's most revered hotels — into an entirely different ocean culture. The 2019 opening answered that challenge with a low-rise campus of white-rendered pavilions arranged to follow the cliff's edge, their hip roofs in dark chocolate tile echoing traditional Ryukyuan pitched forms while the overall massing stays firmly within a Pacific resort vocabulary the original Halekulani made famous. Inside, the 360 rooms draw on bleached ash timber headboard panels, warm sand-toned wool rugs with abstracted botanical patterning, and rattan-framed occasional chairs that sit somewhere between Hawaiian kama'aina comfort and Japanese residential restraint — the salmon accent cushions providing the only real note of colour against an otherwise cream and driftwood palette. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls dissolve each room into its terrace, lush subtropical planting pressing right up to the glazing on lower floors. The main dining room, finished in ivory plasterwork with coffered ceilings, wrought-iron candelabra chandeliers, and a turquoise mural panel suggesting open water, carries a quietly colonial grandeur. The infinity pool, curved at its seaward edge above the reef below, makes the hotel's essential proposition clear: you are looking at the East China Sea, and very little else matters.

"This is one of the most overrated hotel I’ve ever been to. How this hotel is one of the highest ranked hotel on IKYU is just beyond me. Check-in was slow and arrival experience was subpar, I was tired from my flight and ride from the airport and still had to wait half an hour… Not real luxury… The airport pickup didn’t hold the hotel sign and I had to look for him. It was extremely crowded with kids, and other assorted horrible clientele from overseas. Gave me an extremely low floored and badly located room at first which I didn’t like because anyone can see into it. I had to pay extra to have a high floored room. The furnishings weren’t great either, the sofa was rock hard and the others were starting to show their age. Can’t believe the public areas of this hotel look so much older than a hotel that only opened in 2019. The room I got with a paid upgrade was just that much better than my first one, with a better view and better furniture. The receptionist at first told me that “no room is available”, apparently it is, just not for free. The food was OK, but just exhorbitantly priced, even more than Tokyo. The staff spoke not great English as they kept pronouncing my very common English name very wrong… and the telephone operators were so rude you won’t believe you’re in Japan. Come here if you like screaming kids or lots of americans:)"

"Halekulani Okinawa was, hands down, the most luxurious and memorable resort we experienced during our time in Japan. We traveled as a family of four with two young teens and decided to splurge on two rooms in the Sunset Beach Tower, which made the stay incredibly comfortable for everyone. The rooms were beautifully designed and felt truly high end. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, from the stocked minibar and Nespresso machine to the beach bags and sandals you can take home. The provided pajamas were a great touch and added to the overall comfort. Housekeeping was excellent with daily service plus evening turndown, which made coming back to the room each night feel special. What really sets this resort apart is the service. The staff throughout Halekulani Okinawa were consistently warm, polite, and incredibly attentive. They went out of their way to make sure our family felt welcomed and taken care of. Dining was another highlight. We had dinner at House Without a Key, which offered a relaxed setting with great seafood, pasta, and salads, and Steak & Wine for a more elevated experience. The food quality at both was excellent. Steak & Wine is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality and experience matched the cost. Be sure to make dinner reservations in advance, as they open daily and fill up quickly. We didn’t pre-book and had to work around limited time slots. We chose to explore local cafés for breakfast, which ended up being a fun way to experience Okinawa beyond the resort. There are also several great dining options nearby if you have a rental car. The pool areas were beautiful and well maintained, and the gym had everything we needed. The entire property felt peaceful, clean, and very family friendly without losing its luxury feel. If you are looking for a five star luxury resort in Okinawa that delivers exceptional service, beautiful rooms, and a memorable overall experience, Halekulani Okinawa is absolutely worth it. We would gladly return."
