PB hotel design editorial

Rising 195 metres above the Dojima River district in a tower conceived to evoke the silhouette of a sailboat, the Four Seasons Hotel Osaka arrived in 2024 as one of the more architecturally ambitious luxury openings Japan has seen in years. Nikken Sekkei's 49-story One Dojima provides the frame; the hotel fills floors 28 through 37 with 175 rooms and suites, high enough that the Osaka skyline and the distant ring of mountains beyond it become a constant presence — visible in the cerulean pool on the spa level, where water-reflected light ripples across the ceiling, and through the floor-to-ceiling glass of every guest room. Three design studios were commissioned to interpret the property, and the decision to divide that work rather than unify it gives the hotel a genuinely layered character. Gwenael Nicolas of Curiosity brought the high-floor bar its glamorous, almost Deco sensibility — the oval counter, tessellated stone floor in deep ochre and charcoal, and cascading brass pendants carry the warmth of a great European cocktail room transposed forty stories above Japan. Shinichiro Ogata of SIMPLICITY shaped the GENSUI floor, Osaka's first modern ryokan experience within a major hotel, where rooms are stripped to pale ash timber, washi-white walls, and low-slung furniture that references traditional inn culture without quoting it directly. Yasuhiro Koichi of Design Studio Spin completed the ensemble with guestrooms that balance warm walnut slatted screens against generous window seats framing the city below.

"Osaka was our third stop in Japan and we had decided to stay at all Four Seasons properties and we are so happy that we did! We had a driver bring us with our luggage from the FS Kyoto to the FS Osaka. PROS: Arrival was coordinated between the concierge team at the FS Kyoto and the FS Osaka for a seamless arrival and it could not have gone better. We had a FS Corner Suite and again, the welcome experience team had the room decorated to celebrate our anniversary and birthday(s) which was very thoughtful Very spacious suite, well laid out and comfortable. Great views over Osaka, especially at night. The shower / bathtub also have a wet room concept in the corner of the bathroom and is all glass but you can close the shades for privacy. Again, great Toto toilets Housekeeping was excellent Same great PJs that were offered at the FS Tokyo Otemachi were offered at this hotel for guests use Extremely comfortable beds and soft linens - great night's sleep Concierge team was great in setting up a tour guide and driver for tour of Osaka The Chinese Restaurant, Jian Nan Chung, was incredibly good!! Food was so delicious and the service was 6*! Views were amazing as well. Whisky Tasting at Bar Bota was very nice as well. Special shout out to the welcome experience team and concierge team as they made our stay even more amazing. Breakfast was included in our room and it was fantastic. Highly recommend staying here when visiting Osaka CONS: NONE!"

"My stay at Four Seasons Hotel Osaka was exceptional from start to finish. Every team member made me feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. At the Sabo Lounge, Sakura, Ayana, Kaman, and Iris were warm and attentive, creating a seamless and elevated experience. Anissa made the lunch sushi omakase feel personal and memorable, and Thomas from IRD was prompt and professional. Gary and Mika at the front desk provided a wonderful arrival experience. Both were so welcoming, polished, and helpful throughout. It’s truly the people who make this hotel unforgettable. I can’t wait to return."

"Overall it was a nice stay, but as a FS, we expected better. The design of the public areas is beautiful but we do not like the layout of our room. We stayed in a premium room for 4 nights. A separate toilet room on the opposite side of the room, away from the bathroom, is an inconvenient design in our opinion. The AC is another issue, with the airflow directly onto the beds, it disturbed our sleep. Housekeeping could also do a better job. The hair conditioner and bath gel were mixed up, and it rarely happens at any hotel. They put the slippers beside the beds at turndown, but the slippers were still in the package. This makes us wonder if the hotel is trying to save costs by reusing the slippers if guests did not open the bags. Breakfast was the biggest issue. While the quality of the food was excellent, service was terrible. The mornings when we had breakfast at 7:00am, we noticed a shortage of staff already. We were never asked if we would like to have more coffee, and no one removed the dirty plates. One morning, we arrived at 8:00am, the place was busy and service was almost non existent. We were told the hotel was at full capacity, but that should not be a reason for delivering subpar service, especially at a FS. What we love the most are the two amazing restaurants, Jiang Nan Chun and Sushi L’abysse. We had a great time celebrating Chinese New Year at Jiang Nan Chun, and our dinner at Sushi L’abysse was truly extraordinary. Even if you do not plan to stay at the hotel, we highly recommend a visit. The Spa is also very nice. Atmosphere is calm and welcoming. After a day of sightseeing, the Osaka Sensory Ritual was exactly what I needed to relax. Other than the breakfast service at Jardin, the overall service was great. We mostly used WhatsApp to communicate with the hotel, which was convenient. Osaka was cold during our visit. When we headed out for our excursion, the staff at the entrance asked if we needed water and they even provided us with hand warmers which we greatly appreciated."

"My husband and I stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel Osaka for three nights — and it felt far too short. This hotel is exceptional in every way, from the impeccable service to the breathtaking views and overall comfort. The design of both the hotel and the rooms is absolutely beautiful, with a refined, modern aesthetic. Everything was spotless. Our room was spacious, thoughtfully laid out, and offered incredible views of the city. We slept wonderfully each night — the bed and linens were pure luxury. The spa area is truly outstanding, with panoramic views that make you pause and say “wow.” It’s a serene, elevated space that feels like a retreat above the city. The gym is also impressive for a hotel fitness center, offering more equipment than most hotel gyms I’ve experienced and making it easy to maintain a full workout routine. If there’s one area for improvement, it would be breakfast. There is a small buffet selection, and guests are limited to ordering just one item from the à la carte menu. Since there’s no live egg station included in the buffet, it would be more fitting for a hotel of this caliber to allow guests to order multiple items from the menu. That said, the staff were consistently attentive, warm, and professional throughout our stay. We felt genuinely well cared for. We would absolutely return."
