PB hotel design editorial

Directly above Osaka Castle's moat, where the Chuo Ward meets the forested edges of Naniwanomiya Park, a 20-storey glass tower designed by Jun Mitsui & Associates Architects opened on 1 May 2025 as Patina Osaka — the brand's first Japanese property and one of the most precisely site-responsive luxury hotels the city has seen in years. The building's dark curtain wall reads against the cherry blossom canopy and castle stonework below with a quiet confidence, copper cladding and water-referencing details in the architecture drawing a deliberate line between the Edo-period fortifications and the contemporary tower above them. The organizing concept is kisetsukan, the Japanese attunement to seasonal change, and it shapes everything from the orientation of the facade to the material choices inside. Strickland's interiors work through warmth and layering: dark walnut ceiling panels, raised tatami-adjacent platforms with underlighting, jute-weave rugs, and spindle-frame lounge chairs in the upper-floor bar that frame castle views through floor-to-ceiling glass. The bar's coffered timber ceiling and backlit shoji-style screens give the space a hushed ceremonial quality, offset by a large-format photographic artwork and a raw stone counter. Guest rooms carry the same material logic — pale oak floors, integrated built-in seating, pendant lamps in washi-inflected shades — while the indoor pool level pairs veined stone walls with a cedar-slatted ceiling bathed in amber uplighting, the water's surface perfectly still against Osaka's skyline beyond.

Patina Osaka Reviews

83 reviews

"The Patina Osaka was our favorite hotel during our trip to Japan. The location was excellent. It was quiet and peaceful next to the park, but still close to everything we wanted to do in Osaka. The rooms were modern, clean, spacious, and well equipped. Breakfast was fantastic, and our kids said the Patina had the best fluffy pancakes in Japan. The spa had great facilities, and the kids loved being able to use the pool. It was the perfect way for them to cool off after long, hot days exploring the city. The adults also enjoyed the wine selection and the excellent gin and tonics. The staff took great care of our group throughout our stay. We would definitely stay at the Patina Osaka again and would recommend it to friends and family."
