PB hotel design editorial

Midosuji Boulevard — Osaka's great north-south artery, lined with zelkova trees and the kind of civic confidence that announces a city's ambitions — acquired one of its most composed contemporary addresses when the St. Regis Osaka opened in 2010. The building, rising 26 floors above the Hommachi intersection, presents a two-part composition: a pale stone podium of neoclassical register, its arched colonnades and regular fenestration recalling a pre-war commercial palazzo, topped by a slender tower whose white grid facade glows warmly against the Osaka skyline after dark. Hirsch Bedner Associates led the interiors across 160 rooms and suites, grounding the scheme in the brand's New York Beaux-Arts lineage while weaving in quietly Japanese references — delicate sakura motifs pressed into headboard panels, layered screens of warm timber, and amber silk drapery that catches the extraordinary western light visible in the upper-floor rooms at sunset. The food and beverage spaces show the most character. The Japanese restaurant's private dining room deploys double-height walls clad in bold horizontal bands of woven textile and lacquered timber, dark marble counter surfaces and tall paired windows framing the illuminated towers of Hommachi at night — a room that manages genuine theatrical weight without tipping into excess. The French restaurant on the podium levels takes a lighter approach: grasscloth walls, an abstract multicolour rug, and overscaled drum pendants establish a setting closer to a well-appointed Parisian salon than a conventional hotel dining room, the blue-glass tumblers and white linen keeping everything grounded.

"Loved it! Disappointed to see so many reviews saying it's dated and needs reno. This is a St Regis classic luxury and the rooms are well appointed. Great curtains, amazing shower with jets"

"I really wanted to like it but ultimately I cannot recommend it. The room quality is not there and this is not a true St Regis for me. Pros: Unbeatable location, perfect for sightseeing. Extremely convenient for subway access Some staff members were top tier. The Thai gentleman who did the sabrage was incredibly engaged and friendly. Almost all staff members greeted me upon entering and exiting and were very helpful when needed. Cons: Extremely dated rooms. Nicks and cuts everywhere. I’ve seen Fairfields with better room quality. Everything from closet door, baseboards, even hangers show their true age. There are comparable properties in age but don’t look nearly as bad. The bedding, robes and towels were all below average. W down the street though not nearly as impeccable in service runs circles around St Regis. Best robes around and vastly more comfortable. If you want to chill around in a luxury hotel, this one is not it. When you start to question your decision to book the property midway through the stay then you know it’s not for you. I cannot recommend it unless a heavy renovation is in place, then I will be back."

"Our first day did not exactly go very well. At breakfast, the hotel staff seemed to have been extremely overwhelmed with the volume of people . It was chaotic like a train station during rush hours with a long cue of guests waiting to be seated. Our orders needed to be followed up 4x before it arrived 40 minutes later. The second day onwards was more pleasant and organised and service was much better. It now started to feel more like a St. Regis. The buffet breakfast options were very good and was well presented. I observed that the staff seemed to be the regular ones and as they were way more efficient and attentive to guests. We stayed at the spacious Hagi Suite which showed some signs of wear and tear. Albeit, the beds were comfortable and we slept well during our almost week long stay. Our room and bathroom were kept very clean and tidy. We hardly utilised the butler service. The hotel is in a prime location, lots of restaurants in the area and had an easy access to the metro. I would like to thank several people who made our stay as pleasant as possible . Ms Reiko who tried her best to keep some order during the chaotic first day. Ms. Jennica, Ms Yuki, Ai , Susmida, Ms Jeny , Mr Cedric and Mr Sheunjae who served us breakfast daily. They were all very attentive, efficient and polite. They cleared tables without allowing plates to pile up unlike the first day wherein several wait staff were just standing around not knowing what to do , mostly “lost in translation”. I was initially contemplating on giving only four stars but have decided to give five stars since the issue was immediately rectified. My husband and I totally enjoyed our stay and seeing the smile on the faces of the staff each day we returned to the hotel and their efficient service is much appreciated. In the end , having been to the other luxury hotels in Osaka of exactly the same category , the St. Regis Osaka has been added to my list of favourite."

"This is a great hotel in the perfect area to explore Osaka. The service is excellent and you do really feel special from check in to check out. It’s not inexpensive but you get what you pay for. The rooms are a little dated but again wonderful overall experience. Five stars!"

"I stayed at St. Regis Osaka with my family and choose the hotel for its spacious rooms, especially, the very large bathroom, which was perfect during japan’s hot weather. The staff were exceptionally warm and attentive, remembering us throughout our stay and always checking in on how our day went. The room was beautifully designed with great city view, and breakfast was excellent ( I especially loved the Japanese Bento Set). A special thank you to the butler team for surprising me with a St.Regis teddy bear before I returned to Thailand. A Truly thoughtful touch:) Highly recommended, and would be gladly return."
