PB hotel design editorial

Crème, the Brooklyn studio led by Jun Aizaki, faced an unusual brief for 1 Hotel Tokyo: carry a brand built on reclaimed timber and raw naturalism into the sky above Akasaka, where the hotel fills floors 38 through 43 of the Akasaka Trust Tower within the mixed-use Tokyo World Gate development. The entry sequence answers that question immediately — reclaimed barn-board doors framed by Oya stone cladding and living plant walls establish a material warmth that feels genuinely rooted rather than applied. Oya, the porous volcanic tuff quarried in Tochigi Prefecture for centuries, appears throughout, its grey-green texture setting off the honey tones of live-edge timber at every scale. The 211 guestrooms, including 24 suites and three penthouses, frame direct sightlines to Tokyo Tower across a palette of pale plaster walls, exposed timber ceiling beams, tan leather headboards, and white oak floors — a composition that absorbs the city view without competing with it. The bar and lounge lean further into the biophilic premise: mature ficus trees rise through boucle seating clusters, rattan pendant lamps cast layered shadows across a sculpted backlit spirit shelf, and curved timber ceiling fins overhead suggest the interior of a forest canopy. The lap pool, lined in green mosaic tile and flanked by potted bamboo and specimen plantings, extends the same logic into the wellness floor. Holding Japan's highest CASBEE Rank S environmental certification, this is also one of the most rigorously green high-rise hotels anywhere in Asia, expected to open in 2026.

"So so so happy I booked here. Im a female solo traveller and also it was my first time to Japan. I had orginally booked this trip as a way to unwind and to celebrate my birthday. I didnt arrive until pretty late and after navigating my way to the hotel after a long flight, walking through the doors I knew immediately I had made the right choice in booking here. I could go on and on about how beautiful the hotel is but I really want to credit the staff. The attention to detail is incredible. I was particularly taken aback when I returned to my hotel room and found a beautiful bottle of champayne and dessert wishing me happy birthday 🫶 although my details would be on the system, I did not mention it to any staff, so for them to pick it up shows how much they are paying attention. It was super thoughtful and travelling alone makes these moments always a bit hard, but it is thoughtfulness like this that makes the holiday that bit more special and not as lonely. So big shout out to the staff member/members who went out of their way to do this 🙏 From the house keeping, to the bar staff and table servers to the chefs and reception staff and everyone else behind the scenes ..thank you!! Everyone has been such a delight."

"We had a wonderful stay at 1 Hotel. The hotel is beautiful, new, impeccably clean, and the entire staff was friendly and helpful. A very special mention must go to Carmen, whose professionalism and dedication were truly outstanding. She personally took care of us throughout our stay, always making sure that every issue we encountered was quickly resolved. She genuinely cared about finding solutions and went above and beyond to make our experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Carmen is a real asset to the hotel and made a genuine difference to our stay. Thank you!"

"We loved our time at the 1hotel Tokyo. The service was excellent, especially the concierge. Our concierge helped us to find a bottle of sake that our friend had been trying to hunt down in Japan for over a year. We were even connected with the prefecture and manufacturer of the sake! The amenities on the property were spotless and a wonderful retreat from the busy city. We especially loved the hamman steam room. The daily breakfast was high quality and delicious. We especially loved the fresh pressed wellness shots. The tasting menu at dinner was also fantastic and very reasonably priced. We also recommend making use of the town car for local drop offs. The views were incredible all around the hotel. Rooms were spotless and modern. We traveled with our 5 month old baby and it was an excellent stay!"

"Coming from London, lunch at Nini was exactly what we needed. The restaurant is beautiful, the food was amazing, and the service was honestly second to none. A big shoutout to Nawfel, who made our experience so memorable. He knows the menu inside out and went above and beyond to help us choose dishes that suited what we could eat. He was so friendly, genuine, and attentive—it’s rare to come across service like that these days. Thanks, Nawfel, for making our visit so special. We’ll definitely be back the next time we're in town!"
