PB hotel design editorial

At the summit of the Otemachi Tower, a 38-storey commercial skyscraper completed in 2014 by Kengo Kuma & Associates above one of Tokyo's most formal business districts, the design problem was acute: how to make a 84-room Aman feel genuinely grounded in Japan rather than merely decorated with it. The answer, which defines Aman Tokyo from its entry sequence outward, was to treat Japanese spatial grammar — the compression and release of ma, the material warmth of hinoki cypress, the geometry of shoji screens — as structural logic rather than surface ornament. The arrival corridor visible in the images says everything: cobblestone paving pulled indoors, vertical timber fins screening a dining room hung with ink-wash paintings, rough-stacked stone marking the threshold between outside and in. Guest rooms carry the same discipline — pale ash millwork, low platform beds framed by tatami-bordered oak floors, linen-shaded table lamps with lacquered black bases, and floor-to-ceiling glass returning the Tokyo skyline as the dominant artwork. The upper-floor restaurant pairs dark ashlar stone walls with a double-height illuminated wine tower and western views across the city at dusk. At pool level, dark granite clads every surface, small square paper lanterns scatter light across one end wall, and the lap pool itself mirrors the cityscape through full-height glazing — a rigorous, quietly meditative counterpoint to the financial district humming forty floors below.

About

Aman Tokyo is Aman's first urban retreat, located in the heart of the Financial District of Tokyo. No matter the rush outside its door, the 5-star and all-suite hotel offers a serene sanctuary high above Tokyo with just 84 guest suites. Iconic design represents the perfect balance of urban dynamism and cultural sensibility and is the epitome of Japanese minimalism - nonetheless, a dramatic lobby framed by a gigantic washi paper lantern and anchored by a zen garden of water, gravel and rocks will welcome the guests.

Aman Tokyo Reviews

"This is a visually stunning property with all the characteristics of calm and service for which Aman is known. The reception level is especially striking, with impossibly high ceilings and an overall feeling of absenting oneself from the Tokyo dynamic. Aman has really outdone itself in creating an urban oasis in one of the most urban of all urban environments. I could quite happily live the rest of my days in my lovely suite as a matter of space, light and design. The most surprising part of the property was the weak English from so many staff. Aman has properties in wildly remote locations and nevertheless has teams of exceptional staff with full linguistic capabilities. Not so in Tokyo. It was not an exception to have a staff member on the phone where communication was just very difficult. There was also a regrettably formalistic approach to food service hours. At this price point, guests should be pretty much able to do as they wish and the hotel should unfold around them. Instead, there was quite a rigid approach to when and where one could eat, which was especially odd given that there appears to be one central kitchen. Nevertheless, if you missed the cutoff in one establishment, you were entirely out of luck not only to sit there but also to have the dishes from its menu - and there was no traditional Aman sense of meeting the guests' needs. Rather, the rules are the rules and that's that. It was all odd given that the "restaurants" are literally beside each other. But the soaring design in a city known for parsimony as to space makes up for a lot of foibles."

"Amazing. My stay at the Aman Tokyo has probably ruined all my future hotel experiences. I don’t think you can do better. The lobby is breathtaking. It is so spacious with spectacular views over all of Tokyo. The light music playing almost makes it feel as if you are floating on a cloud. It is truly spectacular. The room was also very impressive with perhaps the best hotel bathroom you can find. Showering or bathing with a view over Tokyo was surreal. Finally, the service is top notch. This was perhaps the best and most professional service I have ever experienced. I have no idea how they did it but every employee called me by my name. The service while extremely attentive is not at all intrusive. They have perfected the ultimate luxury hotel experience. A gracious woman by the name of Ro checked me in and also checked me out. She was phenomenal. Finally someone from the hotel escorted me to Tokyo station and helped me with my luggage and tickets. It made it a stress free experience. I cannot wait to get back to Aman Tokyo."

"There is one team located in the heart of Tokyo that delivers service at par with high hospitality standards, true professionalism and genuine attentiveness to guest needs. The brand delivers what is expected, even exceeded. The following deserves a shout-out: Mai, Shingo, Taiyo, Ren, Rikuto, Koichiro, Masahiro, Clare, Soju, Sota, Eva, Carlo and of course Taeko San who has been very welcoming and very responsive to our queries. Also to Kwaku San, his positive vibe is so contagious. Great job to AMAN TOKYO TEAM!!👏"
